Georgia Tech Leads Notre Dame After Day 1 of Two-Day ACC Meet

Georgia Tech moved out to leads against the Notre Dame men and women during day one of its two-day competition.

Georgia Tech swimming and diving had a number of strong performances on day one of the two-day ACC dual meet with the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame on Friday at the McAuley Aquatic Center, recording a total of 35 top-five finishes combined over the first 18 events.
 
The women’s team trails the Irish 121-27, while the men’s team holds a narrow 77-71 lead over Notre Dame midway through the meet.
 
“I think we are swimming very well on both sides. Notre Dame is a great team, so I think we did a good job today and we’re looking forward to coming back tomorrow and getting in some more great racing,” stated head coach Courtney Shealy Hart.
 
Women’s Highlights
 
The women’s team started the meet off on a high note, as the Tech team of Iris Wang, Megan Hansen, Morgan Lyons and Kaitlin Kitchens touched the wall in a time of 1:34.57 in the 200 free relay for a second-place finish. Their time was a season-best for Tech and ranks as the 10th best time in Tech history.
 
The Tech relay team of Alex Rieger, Laura Branton, Maddie Paschal and Lila Best finished fourth overall in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:37.08, placing just ahead of the team of Sara Gilbert, Chloe Miller, Maddie Oliver and Lindsay Wallace and their fifth-place time of 1:39.24.
 
The Tech tandem of Wang and Kitchens finished third and fourth overall, respectively, with times of 50.47 and 51.31 in the 100 freestyle. Wang’s third-place time of 50.47 was a Yellow Jackets’ best time on the season.
 
Freshman Emily Ilgenfritz registered a third-place finish in the 500 free event with a personal best time of 5:02.74, which was also a season-best for the Yellow Jackets. Behind Ilgenfritz was Wallace who touched the wall with a personal best time of 5:11.04 to finish in fifth-place overall.
 
Ilgenfritz also recorded a fourth-place finish with a personal-best time and a Tech season-best time of 2:03.98 in the 200 fly. Oliver (2:06.29), Tamir Gonen Cohen (2:06.89) and Miller (2:07.77) all set new personal-best marks in the 200 fly on the day.
 
In the 200 IM, Chiara Ruiu took fourth-place overall with a Tech season best time of 2:06.10, while freshman Kristen Hepler touched the wall in fifth-place with a personal best time of 2:07.47.
 
Florina Ilie turned in a Tech season best time of 1:04.09 in the 100 breast for a fourth-place finish. Rieger did the same in the 200 back with a fourth-place showing and a season best time of 2:02.42, placing just in front of teammate Maddie Paschal and her time of 2:04.54.
 
In the 400 medley relay, the team of Paschal, Ilie, Lyons and Wang touched the wall third overall with a Tech season best time of 3:47.35, placing just in front of the Tech team of Gilbert, Ruiu, Branton and Kitchens at 3:48.90.
 
Men’s Highlights
 
On the men’s side, the Yellow Jackets recorded second and third-place finishes in the 200 free relay event to start the meet. The team of Robert Borowicz, Aidan Pastel, Dan Cohen Solal and Oskar Zimowski placed second with a time of 1:22.88, while the unit of Stefan Kranenburg, Alex Goerzen, Mark Keaveney and Brad Oberg finished in third at 1:24.60.
 
Sophomore Rodrigo Quadros Correia picked up the first of his two wins on Friday in the 200 IM with the fastest time of the year for Tech in the event at 1:48.05. Correia finished two seconds in front of teammate Moises Loschi and his second-place time of 1:50.77, a new personal-best mark, while Alex Kimpel finished in fourth overall with his time of 1:50.97.
 
Correia’s second win of the day came in the 100 free, as he touched the wall in a time of 44.51, which is a season best for Tech.
 
Loschi would pick up a win in the 100 breast, where he touched the wall in first-place with a Tech season best time of 55.07. Kimpel placed third overall in the event with his time of 56.39.
 
Ben Southern scored a win in the 200 fly event, touching the wall in a Tech season best time of 1:47.04, while freshman Clay Hering registered a fourth-place finish with his personal best time of 1:50.31 in the 200 fly. Southern also posted a fifth-place finish in the 500 free with his time of 4:36.29.
 
Keaveney turned in a team best time of 1:49.05 in the 200 back event to finish in second-place overall, while Goerzen (1:49.12) and Borowicz (1:50.38) placed third and fourth overall, respectively.
 
To close the meet out on Friday afternoon, the team of Keaveney, Loschi, Southern and Correia picked up a key first-place win in the 400 medley relay with their time of 3:16.93.
 
In the men’s 1-meter springboard event, Matt Casillas (296.40), Omar Eteiba (294.53) and Nolan Mallet (274.88) finished in second, third and fourth overall to score for the Yellow Jackets.
 
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow morning, Saturday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m. to conclude the two-day ACC dual meet.
