Michelle Case Leads Campbell to Win Against FAU

BOCA RATON, FLA. – Michelle Case picked up wins in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly, leading Campbell to a 138-67 victory at Florida Atlantic Friday.

Campbell improves to 2-1 on the season with its second straight win, while FAU drops to 0-1.

Case topped the 50 free with a time of 24.23, then claimed the 100 fly with a 57.04 mark.

Sindija Silina also registered two individual victories on the day, taking the 200 free (1:55.25) and the 100 free (53.75). Geena Squartino also took the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:34.87, notching a runner-up finish in the 500 free, posting a time of 5:15.55.

Also taking event wins were Caroline Clark (400 IM, 4:31.54) and Kamaria Mahone (100 back, 58.50). The Camels also collected two relay wins, taking the 200 medley (1:48.95) and the 200 free (1:19.61).

Next up for the Camels will be a trip to Greenville, N.C., taking on East Carolina and Catawba on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Florida Atlantic University swimming and diving opened the 2016-17 season at home on Oct. 14 as the women took on Campbell University and the men held an exhibition meet. Despite 11 top-three finishes, the Owls fell to the Camels 138-67.

“We opened our season with Campbell, which is a really tough Division I opponent from the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association,” said Head Swimming and Diving Coach Lara Preacco. “We had a few setbacks over the past few weeks, but I am proud of the way the women performed. With the training and preparation we have put in, and will continue to put in, I have confidence that we will see more and more improvement and be ready for our upcoming meets. We have an extremely talented team that works hard, stays positive and supports each other; that’s tremendously important.”

Making A Splash

The team’s first win of the season came from freshman Danielle Zacharias who went the distance in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:11.00.

Zacharias did not stop there as she finished second in the 1000 yard freestyle (10:43.78).

Team captain and senior Hannah Roper had an impressive performance of her own taking first in the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:06.25.

Roper also helped lead the team of Alexis DeLisle, Kyleigh Firman and Melanie Doan to a second-place finish in the 200 yard medley relay.

Other top-three finishes include: Sharon Kok, second in the 200 yard freestyle (1:55.90);Kelsey Witkay second in the 50 yard freestyle (24.93) and third in the 100 yard butterfly (58.48); Melanie Doan, third in the 50 free (24.96); Alexis DeLisle, second in the 100 yard freestyle (54.09); Julia Alberti, third in the 500 free (5:17.96); and Doan, DeLisle,Emily Summa and Roper, third in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:39.17).
