Delaware Hosts Georgetown, Saint Francis (Pa)

Delaware hosted Georgetown and Saint Francis (PA) yesterday afternoon during the 2016-17 season opener for the Blue Hens.

The University of Delaware men’s swimming and diving team defeated Georgetown while the Blue Hen women topped Saint Francis (Pa.) and fell to the Hoyas during UD’s 2016-17 season-opener Saturday afternoon at Rawstrom Natatorium.

The UD men posted a 177-121 win over Georgetown, while the women’s team defeated the Red Flash, 185-95, and fell to the Hoyas by a 171-126 score.

Blue Hen senior Alex Hillsley paced the men’s squad by winning the 200 freestyle in 1:43.13, the 200 backstroke in 1:53.59, and the 200 individual medley in 1:54.33. Additionally Hillsley teamed with Andrew Woerth, Asher Kiely and Tomás Elder to capture the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:09.52.

Freshman Kevin Basch won the 1000 freestyle in 9:48.04 and the 500 freestyle in 4:47.61 during his UD debut, while junior Patrick Savidge finished in first place in both the 100 breaststroke in 58.89 and 200 breaststroke in 2:08.08. Kiely captured the 100 backstroke (51.85), Elder won the 50 freestyle (22.00) and Woerth took the 100 freestyle (47.36) for the Blue Hens, while Aaron Nolan was the winner in the 3-meter diving with a 206.70 score.

Additionally the UD 200 medley relay team of Kiely, Chris Cornell, Woerth and Elder captured its event with a time of 1:35.68.

Senior Jordan Sawyer led the Blue Hen women by taking the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.66 and the 100 freestyle in 54.29. Fellow senior Alyssa Santangelo won the 100 backstroke in 58.50, while sophomore Mina Feyrer captured the 200 butterfly in 2:02.12.

The Delaware 200 medley relay team of Santangelo, Annie Nunes, Melissa Manuelli and Sawyer also won its race by posting a 1:47.70 time.

Both Blue Hen teams return to the pool on Oct. 15 when they travel to Fairfax, Va. for a dual meet with George Mason.
