Texas A&M Women, LSU Men Lead at Art Adamson Invite

The Texas A&M women and LSU men lead after day 2 of the Art Adamson Invite.

MANSFIELD, Texas – Texas A&M’s 200-yard medley relay shattered the school record in the race to highlight the Aggies’ second day at the Art Adamson Invitational on Friday at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium.
 
The Aggies continued to duke it out with longtime rival LSU for the top spot in the team standings. Texas A&M edged closer to the Tigers on day two and head into the final day trailing by just 6.5 points, 651-645.5. Following the top two leaders were Arizona State (620.5), TCU (263), Incarnate Word (152), and SMU (133).
 
All four legs of the Aggies’ 200 medley relay were on point as the foursome of junior Brock Bonetti, junior Mauro Castillo, senior Turker Ayar and senior Cory Bolleter touched the wall in 1:25.13, well ahead of the old record of 1:25.51 set originally in 2009 and matched in 2010. 
 
Each Aggie contributed splits that ranked among the top five in school history. Bonetti led off with a 21.28 backstroke leg (No. 3 in school history), followed by Castillo with a 24.04 breaststroke leg (tNo. 5), Ayar with a 20.84 butterfly leg (No. 5) and Bolleter with a 18.97 freestyle leg (No. 4) to bring it home. 
 
In other action, the Aggies tallied first-place finishes in the 400-yard IM and the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Angel Martinez won the 400 IM in a lifetime best time of 3:51.32, which was the eighth-fastest time in school history. Castillo was victorious in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 53.22, which was about a second off his school record but still faster than anyone else in school history.
 
With the dive crew competing at the Mizzou Invitational in Columbia, Mo., the Aggies also received top-notch efforts from junior Tyler Henschel, sophomore Sam Thornton and senior Colton Haffey, who all earned spots in the three-meter final on Friday. Henschel took third with a score of 394.94, Thornton was fifth with 347.05 and Haffey was 10th with 293.05.
 
For the day, Texas A&M posted NCAA “B” cuts in four different events, the 400 IM, 100 breast, 100 back and 100 fly. Earning NCAA “B” cuts were Martinez and freshman Ben Walker in the 400 IM; Castillo, Ayar, Bonetti and freshman Mateo Gonzalez in the 100 fly; Castillo in the 100 breaststroke; and Bonetti in the 100 back. 
 
The Aggies closed out the day with a strong third place finish in the 800 free relay with the foursome of Martinez, senior Juan Rocha, freshman Mike Thibert and Ayar reaching the wall in 6:37.18.

The TCU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up day two of the Art Adamson Invitational in Mansfield on Friday with three Horned Frogs competing in the “A” finals.

Through the first 24 events, the men’s squad is in fourth, while the women’s squad sits in sixth heading into the last day.

Junior Jakub Swierczynski posted an NCAA “B” cut time of 55.14 in the 100 breaststroke, ranking him fourth on TCU’s all-time list. Swierczynski went on to place seventh in the finals at 55.33.

Sophomore Carlos Hunnicutt, who holds the school record in the 400 IM, placed seventh in the “A” finals behind a time of 3:58.23. Sophomore Ally Robertson represented TCU in the 400 IM as she took home seventh at 4:22.44. Freshman Elise Forzley posted the top time in the “B” finals at 4:21.99.

In the 200 medley relay finals, Jake Powell, Swierczynski, John Smith and Garrett Hills took home seventh with a time of 1:30.03.

Freshman Radu Duican led the way for the Horned Frogs in the 200-yard freestyle as he topped the “B” finals with a time of 1:38.70.

In the 100 breaststroke, junior Devin Newton placed 15th overall behind a finals time of 1:03.66. 

Sophomore Ruby Powell and Forzley recorded the top times for TCU in the 100 back as they clocked in at 56.21 and 57.14, respectively. 

The Frogs rounded out the night in the 800 free relay. Duican, sophomore Ross Sullivan, Hunnicutt and sophomore Jack McLaughlin placed fifth with a finals time of 6:41.11. The women’s freshman quartet of Claire Munster, Taylor Newton, Hannah Burt and Nicqueline Rettberg took home 10th at 7:32.29.

MANSFIELD, Texas- Logan Rysemus won two individual events in the 100 fly and 100 back, breaking his own school record in the 100 back with a time of 45.89 to keep the men at first-place overall on day two of the Art Adamson Invitational at the MISD Natatorium. In all, two individual and one team school records were broken on the day.

The men’s team has a five and a half point edge over Texas A&M, totaling 651 points in the overall standings. The women hold steady in second place behind Texas A&M with a point total of 477.

The team will return to action tomorrow for the final day of the invite. Preliminaries for both the men and women will start at 9:30 a.m. with finals starting at 6 p.m.

“It was great to have a day where some school records were taken down,” said head swimming coach Dave Geyer.

“Once again, there were some pieces out together today as a whole. Our freshmen are learning every time they race, and we expect to have a great session tomorrow and finish out the meet.”

In the women’s prelims, Olivia Paskulin improved her personal best in the 100 breast prelims with a time of 1:01.91, putting her at seventh on the all-time list.

During the men’s prelims, Jake Markham, who owns the all-time school record in the 200 free, bested his time in the prelims, clocking at an impressive 1:34.95. Silas Dejean grabbed a first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke, earning a personal best time of 53.21 for second on the all-time list in the event behind Andrei Tuomola.

In the championships, the women’s 200-medley relay team of Zimmer, Colleen O’Neil, Kara Kopcso and Leah Troskot placed third, coming in at 1:38.54.

Lauren Thompson garnered an eighth-place finish in the championship round of the 400 IM, finishing at 4:22.84. In the consolation round, Alexandria Ham came in second place with a time of 4:22.38.

In the 100 fly, Kopcso finished fifth with a time of 52.97. Haylee Knight came in next at sixth and posted a personal best of 53.26, improving to sixth on the all-time list.

Devon Dabney came in eighth in the 200 free, touching the wall at 1:48.35. In the bonus round, Tennyson Henry claimed third with a time of 1:50.26.

In the 100 breaststroke, Colleen O’Neil tallied another third-place finish, earning a time of 1:00.45. Summer Spradley secured a personal best, shaving tenths of a second off her original time to mark a 1:01.33 finish, placing her at fifth overall on the all-time list.

Zimmer took sixth in the 100 back after posting a career best time of 54.69, moving up to eighth on the all-time list. In the consolation round, Andrea Galea garnered second after completing the event at 56.71.

The women wrapped up their events with the 800 free relay, as the team of Troskot, Kopcso, Dabney and Weber secured another third-place finish with a time of 7:12.98.

On the men’s side, Rysemus, Dejean, Devin McCaffrey and Karl Luht tallied a third-place finish, earning a time of 1:25.85 in the 200-medley relay, breaking the school record. The relay team of Brandon Goldman, Harry Ackland, Harrison Jones, and Tyler Harper immediately followed in fourth with a time of 1:28.73.

In the 400 IM, Alarii Levreault-Lopez secured third overall with a personal best of 3:53.52 to improve to seventh on the all-time list.

Rysemus grabbed a first-place finish in the 100 fly, completing the event in 45.98. McCaffrey followed in fifth place, tying for ninth on the all-time list at 47.47.

In the 200 free, Markham and Lewis Clough finished back-to-back in second and third. Markham finished at 1:35.11 and Clough earned a personal best in the event, posting a finish of 1:37.10 to earn eighth on the all-time list.

Dejean capped off the 100 breast, clocking at 53.36 for third overall in the event.

Rysemus earned another individual victory on the night, taking the 100 back at 45.89, besting his previous school record. Luht and Matt Klotz both completed the event with personal bests. Luht secured fourth overall in the all-time list with a time of 47.14, and Klotz moves up to eighth after swimming to a finish at 48.07.

In the final event of the day, the team of Clough, Luht, Markham and Will Arthur wrapped up the event with a 6:30.74 final time, grabbing second place to hold a slight edge over Texas A&M, 651-645.5, in the overall standings.

MANSFIELD, Texas – Senior Brittany Aoyama eclipsed a five-year-old Boise State school record in the 100 fly to highlight the Bronco effort on night two of the Art Adamson Invitational Friday in Mansfield, Texas.
 
Aoyama touched the wall in 52.04, finishing second in the A final and beating Amber Boucher’s 2011 school record by one-hundredth of a second.
 
She was also part of Boise State’s 800 free relay, along with Emma Chard, Amelia Draney and Felicity Cann, which finished second in 7:10.43, the fourth-fastest time in school history. The time was 3.89 second behind he winning time of 7:06.54 from Texas A&M.
 
A second Bronco relay, the 200 medley relay consisting of Abbey Sorensen, Robin Pinger, Katelyn Martin and Ally Kleinsorgen, finished third in 1:39.67, the seventh-fastest in school history and 2.39 seconds behind the winning time of 1:37.28 from Texas A&M.
 
Kleinsorgen posted a top-four finish of her own individually, posting an NCAA B cut of 54.09 to take fourth in the A final, just 0.84 of a second off the pace. Cann and Chard both reached the 200 free A final, with Cann clocking a B cut of 1:47.54 to take fifth and Chard coming in eighth with a time of 1:48.31 after posting a B cut with a 1:47.60 in the morning prelims.
 
Pinger topped the Broncos with a 12th-place finish in the 100 breast, taking fourth in the B final with a time of 1:03.29, while Laura Williams (1:04.46) and Emily Mathis (1:04.71) were 19th and 20th overall, respectively, while swimming in the C final.
 
Mathis posted a 12th-place finish of her own in the 400 IM, taking fourth in the B final with a time of 4:23.91, while Anne Boodt also qualified for the B final and took 16th overall in 4:28.64.
 
The Bronco divers were in action in Flagstaff, Ariz., on the first day of the Lumberjack Invitational. Senior Karli Kriewall paced the Broncos with a career-best and NCAA Zone Qualifying Score of 272.30 to take fifth on 1-meter, with Kacee Olson (249.10) taking 10th and Taylor Hosein (237.35) taking 11th.
