Stanford Women, Ohio State Men Shine at Ohio State Invitational

The Stanford women and Ohio State men are rolling to victory at the Ohio State Invitational thus far.

Ohio State Press Release

Columbus, Ohio— Just one day of competition remains at the 2016 OSU Invite, but plenty of good performances were had by Buckeyes on Saturday.

One Ohio State swimmer earned an event victory tonight: Taylor Vargo in the 100 breaststroke. After besting her seed time by over four seconds this morning during prelims, Vargo (59.86) won in the A finals heat this evening in exciting fashion, topping Pittsburgh’s Lina Rathsack  (59.97). After falling behind during the first 25 yards, Vargo earned superior times over the next 75, culminating in a thrilling final 25 yards during which she overtook her Pitt counterpart.

Overall, including Vargo, Ohio State had six Top 5 finishes during Saturday’s finals session. Both relays fall into that category; OSU’s foursome in the 200 medley relay finished third with a time of 1:39.43, and the team of Meg Bailey, Kathrin Demler, Macie McNichols, and Lindsey Clary took fourth in the final event of the night, the 800 freestyle relay. Those four put up a time of 7:15.80 to close out day two.

The first individual event of the evening- the 400 IM- saw two Buckeyes earn spots in the A finals and both finished in the Top 5. Bailey and Demler took fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 4:08.10 and 4:11.83. Both surpassed their prelim time by at least two seconds and earned NCAA provisional times to boot.

Next up in the 100 butterfly Ohio State again had two swimmers advance into the final heat: Liz Li and Bailey. Li finished second with her time of 51.57 and Bailey took ninth, clocking in at 54.34. Again, both Buckeyes earned NCAA B cut times for their efforts. Winning the event was Stanford’s Janet Hu with a meet record time of 51.05. Stanford swimmers set four meet records, including two pool records, during competition on Saturday. Olympic gold medalists Katie Ledecky and Simone Manuel comprised half of the 800 freestyle relay team that set a pool record, while Manuel’s 200 freestyle time earned that distinction as well.

The Cardinal’s best event of the day was the 200 freestyle, in which they placed the Top 5 swimmers. Clary was the top Ohio State finisher, posting a time of 1:46.57 which is an NCAA provisional time. Vargo’s aforementioned performance followed that, and the 100 backstroke served as the last individual event of the day. Li represented the Buckeyes in the A finals, touching the wall at 54.69, while Zulal Zeren (54.58) and Marianne Kahmann (54.77) gave Ohio State three swimmers in the Top 15 and three NCAA B times.

Diving-wise, both Lara Tarvit and Haley Allen finished in the Top 10 on 1-meter. Tarvit’s score of 279.50 was good for fourth place and Allen’s mark of 244.77 slotted her in ninth place.

Columbus, Ohio— Day two of the OSU Invite is now in the books and Ohio State still holds a commanding lead over the rest of the field thanks to a big day of swimming and diving.

The Buckeyes saved their most exciting performance for last. The 800 freestyle relay closed out the competition today and Ohio State’s foursome of Ching Lim, Brayden Seal, Andrew Appleby, and Josh Fleagle won with a time of 6:28.01, just narrowly edging out Penn State by a tenth of a second. Heading into the final swimmer, OSU actually trailed by almost two seconds. Fleagle’s 200 freestyle split time of 1:35.00 was the fastest in the event and helped him overtake Penn State’s JP Freitas down the stretch and whipping the McCorkle crowd into a frenzy.

Ohio State won three of the five individual events during the evening session: 400 IM, 100 butterfly, and 200 freestyle. As a matter of fact, OSU went 1-2 in all of those events as well.

Ching Lim, who won the 200 IM yesterday, took first place in the 400 IM on Saturday with his time of 3:46.16. Making his win more impressive is the fact that he already had the fastest prelim time and still improved upon that by almost five full seconds. Teammate Andrew Lindstrom (3:51.74) came in second, and he also bested his prelim time. Including those two, Ohio State had five finishers in the Top 15 thanks to three swimmers competing in the B final. Andrew Loy (12th, 3:54.04), Brandon Fronczak (13th, 3:54.11), and Matt Moen (15th, 3:57.02). All three bettered upon their prelim times by at least two seconds.

Following that up was the 100 butterfly, where McHugh (46.78) and Michael Salazar (47.02) took the top two spots for the Buckeyes. Two other OSU swimmers competed in the A finals in that event: Henrique Painhas (48.70) and Noah Lense (50.12) earned Top 10 points for Ohio State.

Prior to his aforementioned relay performance, Fleagle won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:34.91, one of five Buckeyes to place in the Top 10. Seal finished right behind Fleagle (1:36.72) while Appleby (1:37.87), Joey Long (1:37.95), and Ryan Vander Meulen (1:38.23) all swam in the A finals as well.

Colin Zeng added a first place finish on 3-meter for Ohio State. His score of 403.45 was the only mark over 400 from any diver, prelims or finals, today. Teammates Clay White, Quinlan DeVal, and Stephen Romanik all advanced to the finals as well, finishing in that order. All four advancing Ohio State divers finished in the Top 10.

The top Ohio State finishers in the 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke were Jack Barone (54.41) and McHugh (46.83), respectively. Both Buckeye swimmers placed second in those races.

In addition to the 800 freestyle relay, Ohio State actually won the meet-opening 200 medley relay too. McHugh, Barone, Michael Salazar, and Fleagle outpaced the field with their time of 1:26.62.
