Loyola Sweeps Howard

Loyola swept a pair of meets against Howard on Saturday.

BALTIMORE – Two Loyola University Maryland freshmen, Megan Adlem and Alex Munson, set school and Mangione Pool records on Saturday, helping the Greyhounds post non-conference victories over Howard University Saturday afternoon.
 
The Greyhounds men defeated the Bison 103-90, while the women were winners by a similar margin, 101-90.
 
Adlem was one of three Loyola women, all freshmen, to swim under the previous school record time in the women’s 100-yard individual medley. She set a new pool and program standard in the event with a time of 1:01.45, shaving nearly a second off Maddie Myers’ previous record of 1:02.37.
 
Emily Koegl and Annie Hayburn finished second and third, respectively, in the event in times that were under Myers’ mark. Koegl touched the wall in 1:01.53, just eight-thenths of a second back of Adlem, and Hayburn finished in 1:01.89.
 
Just one event later, Munson took down another record, winning the men’s 100-yard individual medley in 53.37, breaking the previous mark of 54.27 set by Zeke Wolfgang. In the event, Wolfgang finished second to Munson in a time that was also under his previous standard, 53.87.
 
Earlier in the afternoon Adlem got the day started in fast fashion for the women. She swam the third leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay, turning in a time of 27.16 in the butterfly to help the Greyhounds win in 1:52.93 with teammates Hayburn, Alden Coyne and Gabrielle Clarkson.
 
After the men’s team of Munson, Ben Cono, Alec Sperandio and Wolfgang took first in their version of race with a time of 1:35.38, Adlem posted an individual win in the 1,000-yard freestyle. The Australian dominated the field with a time of 10:30.28, more than a half-minute in front of Coyne, the second-place finisher who swam 11:00.60.
 
Luca DiCapua took first in the men’s 1,000-ard freestyle, swimming 10:33.41, and Richie Kogut was third in the event in 10:38.61.
 
Jenna Egan led a Loyola women’s contingent that took the top four spots in the 200-yard freestyle. She touched the wall in 2:00.50, followed by Elizabeth Romano (2:03.60), Alden Bauman (2:05.37) and Jaime Knippenberg (2:06.70).
 
Chris Cary paced three men’s swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle, winning in 1:46.66, while Zac Metzler (1:48.37) and Andrew Mann (1:49.15) too second and third, respectively.
 
Swimmers from Howard, Leann McMaster and Timothy Miller, won the men’s and women’s 50-yard freestyles in 25.48 and 21.91, respectively. Marie Clarkson (25.91) and Phillip Jones (22.48) were second in the races as the Greyhounds’ top finishers.
 
Lindsey Staszewski remained undefeated in dual-meet competition, winning the 1-meter diving event with 239.85 points, ahead of teammate Allison Echeverria who was second with 219.90. She later won the 3-meter event with 249.30, and Echeverria was second with 208.65.
 
Sam Baluzy was a double-winner on the men’s side, winning the 1-meter diving event with 259.65 in front of Adrian Halarewicz’s 166.65 points. He also won the 3-meter event with 205.35 points, besting Halarewicz’s 169.35.
 
Bauman then took top honors in the women’s 200-yard butterfly, winning in 2:15.27, while Andrew Mann claimed the win in the men’s version, swimming 2:00.84.
 
Christina Guertin was the winner of the 100-yard freestyle (55.72), out-touching Tara Mulligan by 0.47. Miller again won the sprint for Howard on the men’s side, while Wolfgang (48.62), Jones (50.12) and Zack Compton (50.12) took second through fourth.
 
Courteney Martin led three Greyhounds who were first, second and third in the women’s 200-yard backstroke, winning in 2:14.86. Koegl and Gabrielle Clarkson were second and third in 2:16.22 and 2:17.84.
 
Cono claimed the title in the men’s 200-yard backstroke (1:58.09), while Sperandio (1:58.72) and Kogut (1:58.72) were second and third.
 
Theresa McKallen won the women’s 500-yard freestyle in 5:27.52, beating teammate Christina Napoli (5:31.70) to the wall. Munson then won his second event for the men, swimming 4:47.51 to defeat second-place teammate Metzler (4:59.17).
 
Brooke Sharkey led the way in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke with a winning time of 2:31.28, and Myers finished second in 2:32.40. John Callaghan won the men’s 200-yard breaststroke in 2:12.22.
 
The Greyhounds take next weekend off for Thanksgiving Break before returning to the Mangione Pool at the Fitness and Aquatics Center for the H2ounds Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3. Loyola will host Iona College, Marist College and Saint Peter’s University in the two-day meet.
