Frostburg State Smashes Records In Split Against Saint Mary's

Frostburg State put together a strong day of swimming in a split against Saint Mary's as the Bobcats took down eight school records.

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's and women's swim teams combined to break eight school-records and the Bobcat women went on to the defeat St. Mary's, while the men fell to the Seahawks, Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Natatorium.

The Bobcat women earned their first-ever Capital Athletic Conference dual meet win in a 148-113 defeat of St. Mary's. The women used 10 first-place finishes to surge ahead of the Seahawks and make program history.

The FSU men picked up three wins; however it wasn't enough as they fell to the Seahawks, 166-96.

Junior Macie Nitchie earned the Bobcats first win of the day in the 200-meter freestyle; she touched the wall with a time of 2:14.00, five seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. She also went on to win the 50-meter freestyle (27.55) and won the 400-meter freestyle in a new school-record time of 4:47.89.

Nitchie was also the anchor of the school-record breaking 200-meter relay team of senior Sydney Fazenbaker, freshman Becca Marsh and sophomore Maddie Weinberger. The team touched in at 1:56.13 for first place.

Weinberger collected three individual wins in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:17.86) the 200-meter breaststroke (2:51.84) and the 100-meter IM (1:11.20). Her time in the 100-meter IM marks a new Bobcat school-record.

Sophomore Emily Turner collected two first-place finishes for the Bobcats. She turned in top times in the 100-meter backstroke (1:12.24) and the 200-meter backstroke with a record-breaking time of 2:35.42. Turner also finished second in the 100-meter butterfly (1:15.94).

The men were led by junior Christian March who collected three first-place finishes and two new school records.

March started the day off with a Bobcat school-record and first place performance in the 50-meter freestyle (23.99). He also touched the wall first in the 200-meter breaststroke with a school-record time of 2:30.63. He ended his individual events with a win in the 100-meter IM (1:03.02).

In the last race of the day, the men's 200-freestyle relay team of junior Daniel Ryczek, freshman Jacob Auerbach, junior Deionn Yarberough and junior Christian March set a new school-record in 1:43.28.

Ryczek finished the day behind three third-place finishes. The junior touched third in the 800-meter freestyle (9:47.30), the 100-meter freestyle (58.15) and the 400-meter freestyle (4:47.48).

The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team (1-3, 1-2 CAC) would earn their first victory of the season against Capital Athletic Conference foe, Frostburg State University (5-5, 0-3 CAC), on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

- First-year Peter Orban (Montgomery Village, Md./Watkins Mill) would lead the Seahawks in the win with four gold medals – two individual and two relays. He won the 100 backstroke (1:02.43) and the 200 backstroke (2:18.96). Senior captain Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood) helped St. Mary's with a 1-2 finish in the 200 backstroke as he took second in 2:20.74.
- The Seahawks would kick off the meet with a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay as Orban, junior Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep), junior Lucas Delgado Bowie, Md./Gonzaga [D.C.]), and senior captain Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) swam a time of 1:55.03.
- Braker, first-year Andrew March (Westminster, Md./Westminster), first-year Ryan Akhavan (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), and sophomore Reed Rhoads (Westminster, Md./Winter Mills) would take silver in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:58.36.
- Walchuck led a 1-2 finish in the 800 freestyle as he won the event in 9:15.98 and senior captain Andrew Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha) followed in second with a time of 9:32.89.
- Walchuck picked up his third gold medal in the 100 freestyle (54.77) while sophomore Colin Cassady (Phoenix, Md./Calvert Hall) came in second in 56.13.
- Braun would earn an individual gold in the 400 freestyle in 4:31.37 and grab a silver medal in the 50 freestyle in 26.03. Rhoads placed third in the 50 free with a time of 26.13.
- Braker successfully completed the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:05.17 to earn nine points and a first-place finish for the Seahawks. Cassady followed closely behind Braker, earning the second-place spot with a time of 2:05.56.
- Broder and March would earn high points for the Seahawks in the 100 breaststroke. Broder would come in at 1:10.36 to take the gold while March followed quickly after at 1:14.71 to earn second place.
- Akhavan notched first place in the 200 butterfly in 2:24.53 while Delgado claimed third in 2:30.73.
- Cassady would contribute a gold medal in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.79 followed by Akhavan in second in 1:03.37.
- The final gold of the meet came in the 200 freestyle relay which featured Braker, Akhavan, Orban, and Cassady.
- Broder paced the team in both the 200 breaststroke (2:36.20) and the 100 individual medley (1:05.65), finishing second in both events.

The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team (0-4, 0-3 CAC) fell to Frostburg State University (6-3, 1-2 CAC) on Saturday afternoon in a Capital Athletic Conference dual meet.

How It Happened

- The Seahawks would walk away with four gold medals as Frostburg State claimed its first-ever conference dual meet win.
- St. Mary's would start the day earning gold in the 200 medley relay as first-year Carolyn Sutton (Laurel, Md./Laurel), sophomore Hailley Baughman (Lineboro, Md./Manchester Valley), junior captain Rachel Sonnenberg (Derwood, Md./Magruder), and senior captain Lizzie Straathof (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) swam a time of 2:11.46.
- R. Sonnenberg claimed two golds for the Seahawks. The Sonnenberg sisters led a sweep of the 200 butterfly as R. Sonnenberg finished first in 2:58.10 while Becca Sonnenberg took second (2:58.10) and first-year Angela Ross (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) came in third (2:58.44).
- R. Sonnenberg's third gold came in the 100 butterfly as she touched the wall in 1:14.05.
- Junior Emma Green (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) would take nine points for the Seahawks in the 800 freestyle, clocking a 10:18.04 for the team's fourth gold medal.
- Straathof would capture second place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:19.46 while sophomore Elizabeth Valenti (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) would follow behind earning the third spot in 2:22.28.
- Baughman would earn three silvers for the Seahawks. She would swim a 1:21.42 in the 100 breaststroke to take away four points followed by a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke (3:00.89). Her final silver came in the 100 individual medley with a time of 1:15.84.
- Ross led the Seahawks in the 200 backstroke with a second-place finish in 2:41.36 while Valenti finished second in the 400 freestyle in 4:55.56 followed by Straathof in third (4:58.45).
- Also earning a silver medal would be Sutton, who found the finish line in 1:14.09 in the 100 backstroke.
- The final silver of the day came in the 200 freestyle relay as Sutton, sophomore Rachel Yates (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island), sophomore Samantha Schoenecker (Dallas, Texas/Woodrow Wilson), and Straathof posted a time of 1:58.18.
- Yates would take home third in the 50 freestyle with a 30.07 finish followed by Schoenecker in fourth (30.24).
- Schoenecker led St. Mary's in the 100 freestyle with a third-place finish in 1:06.28.
