Colgate-Binghamton-VMI Do Battle in New York

Colgate, Binghamton and VMI battled in a tri-meet in New York on Saturday.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Isabel French and Morgan Davis set school records and the VMI men's team nearly pulled off a win over Colgate in swimming and diving action contested Saturday in Binghamton, N.Y.
 
VMI, however, dropped both ends of the tri-meet on both the men's (4-3) and women's (2-4) side, with the Keydet women losing to Binghamton (247-27) and Colgate (232-34), while the VMI men came up short against BU (183-101) and CU (153-129) as well. 
 
John Kim was VMI's lone individual winner on the day, clocking in at 52.88 in the 100 back to continue his outstanding season. Kim also won the 200 medley relay with Bret Tomajczyk, Jarred Nagle and Ryan Schmitz, who combined to time in 1:39.29.
 
Schmitz also had a solid individual day, finishing second in the 50 free (22.45). Tomajczyk was third in the 200 breast (2:19.92) as well.
 
Other solid results for the VMI men included Brady Gannon finishing third in the 100 free (49.92), Jacob Smilie placing third in the 200 back (2:00.95) and JT Lancaster coming home third in the 100 fly (56.23).
 
Lancaster, Schmitz, Gannon and Niko Nemceff also were credited with the victory in the 200 free relay due to exhibitioning, as they touched the wall in 1:30.53.
 
On the women's side, the school records were the story of the day, as Davis touched the wall in 2:23.66 in the 200 fly and French shattered the previous mark in the 200 breast with a 2:34.99 effort.
 
VMI swimming and diving will return to action Wednesday, when the Keydets take on Loyola (Md.) in Baltimore. Opening swim is set for 6 p.m.
