Wingate Captures Wingate Quad Title

Wingate captured its own Wingate Quad title on Saturday.

Charlotte, N.C.----The number nine Wingate University women's swimming team won seven events on the way to a convincing victory in the Wingate Quad meet at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center Saturday. The Bulldogs accumulated 750 points in the two-day event, winning eight events Friday and seven competitions Saturday. Lenoir-Rhyne (381 points), Catawba (250) and Limestone (223) followed Wingate on the team leader board (complete results; Saturday results).

Bulldog junior Alex Divelbiss (Pueblo, Colo.) won two individual events and earned a relay gold medal to lead Wingate. Divelbiss won the 100 Butterfly (57.71) as Wingate claimed the first six spaces in this event. Later in the afternoon, the Adams State (Colo.) University touched first in the 400 Individual Medley with her triumphant time of 4:38.60. The Bulldogs won the gold, the silver and the bronze in the 400 IM.

Divelbiss completed her day by swimming the anchor leg of Wingate's victorious 400 Freestyle Relay team. The Bulldogs posted a time of 3:35.57. Divelbiss was joined by senior Vika Arkhipova (Seversk, Russia) and sophomores Hanna Van Horen (Hofstade, Belgium) and Maria Madsen (Dragoer, Denmark).

Arkhipova and Madsen won one individual event each. A 2016 Academic All-America selection, Arkhipova touched first in the 100 Backstroke (57.59), while Madsen won the 50 Freestyle (24.77). Van Horen was second (only 0.20 seconds behind first-place) in the 1000 Freestyle with her silver-medal time of 10:40.58.

Wingate senior Jessika Weiss (Macon, Ga.) won the 200 Breaststroke with her time of 2:22.82 as the Bulldogs filled the first three spots on the podium. The Navy Blue and Vegas Gold-clad swimmers started their day by winning the 200 Medley Relay (1:48.76). Team members include graduate student Olga Kosheleva (Yekaterinburg, Russia), senior Caitlin Coughlin (Cochranville, Pa.), junior Mariona Espinalt (Barcelona, Spain) and freshman Corinne Mahoney (Bayville, N.J.).

Wingate hosts its annual Fall Frenzy Nov. 18-20 at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Defending NCAA Division II national champion Queens University highlights a field which includes UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, St. Andrews, Lenoir-Rhyne and Limestone. In 2015, both Wingate teams finished second in the Fall Frenzy Invitational at the Rock Hill Aquatics Center. Four schools participated in last year's event.

The number 13 Wingate University men's swimming team collected three gold medals (two individual, one relay) to win the Wingate Quad meet at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center Saturday. The Bulldogs posted 613 points in the two-day event, winning six events Friday and three competitions Saturday. Lenoir-Rhyne (406 points), Catawba (379) and Limestone (285) followed Wingate on the team leader board (complete results; Saturday results).

Wingate redshirt sophomore Lennart Queiss (Langen, Germany) and redshirt junior Sebastian Holmberg (Njutanger, Sweden) had their hands in two victories each for the host Bulldogs. Individually, Holmberg and Queiss won the 100 Butterfly (49.92) and the 200 Freestyle (1:42.56), respectively.

The aforementioned duo swam the first and second legs as Wingate won the gold medal in the meet-concluding 400 Freestyle Relay (3:05.76). Holmberg and Queiss were joined on the 400 Freestyle Relay team by seniors Lucas Cuadros (Cali, Columbia) and Leif-Henning Klüver (Risum-Lindholm, Germany).

The Bulldogs amassed three individual silver medals Saturday. Senior Mehdi Zeraidi (Brussels, Belgium) was second in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 21.41. Earlier this season, the team captain (along with Cuadros) won the 50 Free in the Queens University of Charlotte dual meet with a 21.47 clocking.

Sophomore Niklas Martin (Kempton, Germany) and freshman Leo Zabudkin (Frankfurt, Germany) claimed silver medals in the 100 Backstroke (52.06) and the 200 Breaststroke (2:06.22), respectively. Wingate won three bronze medals (two individual, one relay) on Saturday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Catawba finished up the Wingate Quad Meet with Wingate, Lenoir-Rhyne and Limestone on Saturday at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center. Freshman Mario Zaninovic picked up another individual win as the Catawba men collected 379 points. The women finished with 250 points as both squads finished third.

Zaninovic's third win of the two days came in the 1000 free on Saturday. He won by seven seconds over teammate Ali Hegazi with a time of 9:44.12 which is the third fastest time in school history. Hegazi came back to edge Zaninovic in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.64 to his 1:44.71 as the duo went two-three.

John Barreto took fourth in the 50 free (21.49) and the 100 fly (51.55), while Federico Borrego Higareda was fourth in the 200 breast (2:11.18). Dominik Brus claimed fifth in the 100 fly (52.21). Brus, Higareda, Barreto and Hegazi helped the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams to second place finishes.

Marcia-Mariel Erhart had the top finish for the women. She was third in the 1000 free with a time of 10:43.06 good enough for eighth in the record book. Cassie Shear posted a fifth-place finish in the 200 breast (2:5.61).

Catawba will next swim at the Fall Frenzy from Nov. 18-20 at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.
