East Carolina Edges William & Mary at CAA Pod Meet

ECU snared a pair of wins against William and Mary on Saturday at the CAA Pod Meet.

HARRISONBURG, Va. --- The East Carolina men and women’s swimming and diving teams swept a dual meet with William & Mary during Saturday’s CAA Pod Meet at Savage Natatorium on the campus of James Madison University. The Pirate men’s squad posted a 148-124 win over the Tribe, while the ladies team recorded a 141-131 win.

ECU also competed against host JMU on the women’s side and fell 172.50-107.50.

Senior Erle Craven and junior Boleck DePawlikowski each registered a pair of individual first-place finishes, while Craven helped the Pirates sweep the relay events. DePawlikowski swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 with a 50.64 and the 200 by 2.63 second with a mark of 1:50.36.

Craven touched first in both breaststroke events, finishing 0.13 seconds ahead of teammate Will Hicks in the 100 before outdistancing the field with 3.52 seconds in the 200 with a time of 2:03.36. Craven swam leadoff for the victorious 200 free relay team and the second leg for the triumphant 200 medley relay unit.

Freshman Blaz Demsar was the fastest swimmer in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.70, touching 0.20 seconds in front of the runner-up. He nearly swept the butterfly events, finishing second in the 100 by a mere 0.05 seconds.

Sophomore Victor Santos and freshman Maxime Cadiat finished two and three in the 50 and 100 free, respectively. Santos missed the podium by 0.25 seconds in the 50 and 0.98 in the 100.

On the women’s side, junior Julie Lajoie recorded a trio of wins, touching first in the 400 IM, 200 fly and 200 back. She was victorious by nearly seven seconds (6.67) in the 400 IM with a time of 4:26.18. She finished 1.87 seconds in front of rookie teammate Victoria Gillet in the 200 fly (2:03.71) before posting a 0.89 second win in the 200 back (2:03.26).

Senior Marion Abert tied for first-place in the 200 freestyle with a mark of 1:51.68 and placed second in the 500 free (4:58.81).

ECU won the women’s 200 free relay as the foursome of Logan Graumann, Erin Polich, Anna Svanbergsson and Tori Angermeier compiled a time of 1:36.31.

The Pirates will return to action, Nov. 17-19 at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta
