Lehigh Edges Loyola in Baltimore

Lehigh edged out Loyola in a pair of meets on Saturday.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Lehigh men’s swimming and diving team picked up a 171-129 road victory at Loyola on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks collected nine victories on the afternoon including three from Jacobs Moyar, and one each from Nico Lastauskas, Justin White, Jamal Willis, Zach Tieke, Jimmy Davey, and the 400 free relay team. With the win, the Mountain Hawks improve to 2-2 (1-1 Patriot) on the season.
 
Lehigh collected runner-up finishes in both the 100 and 200 backstrokes from Dean Shafritz and Walker Wilson, respectively. Wilson additionally took third place in the 100 back with his time of 53.61.
 
Tyler Christ took the second spot in the 100 breast in 1:00.09 and Lastauskas took runner-up in the 200 breast with his time of 2:13.46. Christ also cracked the top three in the 200 breast with a third place time of 2:13.55.
 
Lehigh took the top two spots in five different events on the day, including the 100 butterfly with Davey (52.81) and Tieke (53.13), while Moyar grabbed one of his three wins on the day in the 200 fly (1:54.23).
 
The Mountain Hawks dominated the field in the freestyle by winning all five individual events, with Willis (20.99) and White (21.15) finishing one-two in the 50 free. Tieke took home the top spot in the 100 free (46.57), followed closely behind by White (46.87). The same duo also landed on the podium in the 200 free as White took home the top prize (1:42.72) and Tieke finished third (1:45.04).

Lehigh swept the podium in both the 500 and 1,000 yard freestyles. Moyar paced the field in the 500 with his time of 4:49.57, followed by Daniel Brooks (4:51.73) and Ryan Morgan (4:58.36). Lastauskas led the field in the 1,000 by touching the wall in 9:55.31, followed by Justin Kostelnik (10:10.73) in second and Mauk (10:16.41) in third.

Moyar’s final win of the day came in the 200 IM, where he bested the field in 1:54.45.
 
The 400 yard freestyle relay team of Tieke, Wilson, Willis and White tallied the win with their combined time of 3:10.20. The 200 yard medley relay team also scored team points with a second place time.
 
On the boards, Croly Veliz finished second on both the one (206.77) and three meter (215.10) boards.
 
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool next Friday and Saturday in New Jersey at the Princeton Invitational.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Lehigh women’s swimming and diving team picked up its third win in a row on Saturday afternoon with a 169-125 victory at Loyola. The Mountain Hawks earned victories in 10 events, including two from Kaitlyn Ruffing and Sydney Bornstein, plus one each from Julianne Koch, Nicole Shek, Sydney Bornstein, Meghan Thompson, Kelly Carroll, the 200 medley relay team and the 400 freestyle relay team. Lehigh now sits at 3-1 (1-1 Patriot) on the season.
 
Lehigh was strong throughout the freestyle events, winning four of the five, including sweeping the podium in three of them. The 50 yard free saw Ruffing (23.77), Audra Smires (24.52) and Amanda Zlotnikoff (24.63) take the top three spots in order, with Ruffing also leading the way in the 100 free, followed by Payton Miles and Smires.
 
The Mountain Hawks also held a grip on the 200 yard free, with Koch (1:53.32), Thompson (1:54.40) and Courtney Ferreira (1:56.45) pacing the field in order. Lehigh then took the top two spots in the 500 free with Thompson (5:08.27) winning the race and Thomson (5:11.03) coming in second.
 
Cora Summerfield (10:40.34) captured runner-up in the 1,000 yard freestyle, just ahead of Thomson who finished in third place with her time of 10:41.41.
 
Bornstein and Carroll tied for first atop the field in the 100 yard butterfly with their time of 57.97 seconds. The same duo took the top two spots in the 200 fly as well, with Bornstein (2:05.42) winning the event and Carroll (2:07.07) taking second.
 
Lehigh grabbed a pair of victories in relay events, including the 200 medley relay team of Shek, Loeva Palu-Benson, Carroll and Ruffing (1:48.44), as well as the 400 freestyle relay team of Koch, Miles, Smires and Ruffing (3:32.45).
 
Ferreira led the way for Lehigh with a second place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:11.61). Thompson finished right behind in third place with a 2:12.88 tally.
 
Shek was the top finisher in the 100 yard backstroke (59.32), while Koch was the runner-up in the 200 yard backstroke event (2:07.46). Allison Morel was the top Lehigh finisher in the 200 yard breast with her third place finish of 2:28.95.
 
The Mountain Hawks will return to the pool next Friday and Saturday in New Jersey at the Princeton Invitational.

BALTIMORE, Md. - Despite strong performances by divers Sam Baluzy and Lindsey Staszewski, the Loyola University men's and women's swimming and diving teams dropped close decisions to Lehigh University at the Mangione Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Lehigh men's team pulled out a 171-129 victory over the Greyhounds, who entered the meet with a 3-0 record against Patriot League teams. The Loyola women's team, which was also 3-0 against PL squads, fell by a 169-25 margin.

Baluzy broke into the top five in one-meter diving at Loyola. His score of 265.65 points earned him first on the one-meter diving event. He also captured first place on the three-meter dive with a 247.20 score.

On the women's side, Staszewski also captured first in the one-meter (229.79 points) and the three-meter diving events (245.77 points). Her score in the three-meter diving was one point off her personal best mark. Freshman Allison Echeverria finished second in the one-meter diving with 207.29 points.

The Loyola men's team started off the meet in fine fashion as freshman Alex Munson, junior Ben Cono, senior Zeke Wolfgang and junior Alec Sperandino combined to win the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:48.44, edging Lehigh by 0.09 seconds.

However, Lehigh's depth took its toll on the Greyhounds. Lehigh took first place in nine events and swept the top three places in the 500-free and the 1000-free.

In addition to swimming on the winning 200-medley relay team, Cono had a strong meet. He finished first in the 100-breaststroke (0:57.24) and the 200-breaststroke (2:11.00) and turned in a third place showing in the 100-butterfly (0:53.42).

Munson took first place in the 200-breaststroke (2:11.00) and was runner-up in the 200-free (1:43.94) as well as the 200 I.M. (1:56.20).

Wolfgang gave the Greyhounds a first place finish in the 100-backstroke (0:52.30).

Sperandino had a pair of third place finishes in the 50-free (0:21.75) and the 100-free (0:48.46) while Zac Metzler took second place in the 200-fly (1:54.23)

In the women's race, freshman Morgan Adlem was a double-winner as she took first place in the 200-backstroke (2:07.42) and the 200 I.M. (2:09.57).

Freshman Elizabeth Romano also provided a highlight by winning the 1000-free with a time of 10:40.18. In the 1000-free, junior McKenzie Coan finished ninth with a time of 12:34.74. Her time broke the American record in the S7 1000, a mark previously held by Cortney Jordan. Coan won three gold medals at the Rio Paralympics in September.

In the 100-breaststroke, senior Courtney Kenyon took first place with a time of 1:07.16, edging her teammate, freshman Devin Cronin by .54 seconds.

Cronin was also runner-up in the 200-breaststroke (2:28.53) and was part of the 200-medley relay team which finished second. Marie Clarkson, Annie Hayburn and Gabrielle Clarkson also swam on the 200-medley relay which posted a time of 1:48.44.

Marie Clarkson also swam a great race in the 100-backstroke as she finished second (0:59.72). Nicole Shek of Lehigh beat her by 0.4 seconds.

Senior Theresa McKallen gave the Greyhounds a first place finish in the 200-breaststroke (2:27.47), beating Cronin by a second.

Loyola returns to action on Wednesday, November 16 when the Greyhounds host Virginia Military Institute at 6 p.m.
