WPI swam strong against Babson and Brandeis on Friday.

WORCESTER – Junior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) and freshman Dave Chen (East Lyme, CT) each earned a pair of individual victories as the WPI men’s swimming & diving team swept Babson and Brandeis Friday night in the Sports & Recreation Center.
The Engineers, who earned their 23rd and 24th consecutive dual meet victory since the facility opened in 2012, defeated the Judges 190-108 and the Beavers 200-93. Brandeis won the head-to-head with Babson by a count of 150-134.
Melanson totaled 242.70 on the 1-meter diving board and 222.95 on the 3-meter. Chen, meanwhile, took both breaststroke events with a 59.64 in the 100 and a 2:12.22 in the 200. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), senior Frederick Burgwardt (Mendon, NY), sophomore Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and senior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) assured the sweep with a winning-time of 1:27.86. Jack Bauer, senior Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY), Perry and Andrew Bauer collaborated to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:35.87, while the B and C lineup finished second and third. Jack Bauer touched the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle (47.48) and Andrew Bauer posted a 22.28 to take the 50-yard freestyle. Senior Matt Houghton (Berkley, MA) also earned gold with a 2:01.19 in the 200-yard backstroke.
Burgwardt was the runner up in the 100-yard backstroke (55.87) while Houghton was second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.86) and freshman Gavin Lee (Bethel, CT) took home silver in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:30.01). The international trio of sophomore Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), sophomore Roberto Esquiuel (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) and junior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) all finished third in their respective events. Miralda clocked a 1:51.12 in the 200-yard freestyle as Esquivel posted a 5:05.22 in the 500-yard freestyle and Elsayed registered a 53.10 in the 100-yard butterfly. Junior Sam Carley (Trumbull, CT) was the quickest Engineer in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.31.
The Engineers (2-0) trek to RPI tomorrow for a 1pm meet. Babson (0-3) heads to Norwich next Saturday for a 1pm double-dual with Regis. Brandeis (1-5) entertains Bentley Friday, November 18 at 6pm.
WORCESTER – Freshman Emma Edwardson (Cary, NC) swept the breaststroke events as the WPI women’s swimming & diving team bested Babson, Smith and Brandeis Fridaynight in the Sports & Recreation Center.
The Engineers topped the Beavers 198-91 and Pioneers 172-117 while also outscoring the Judges 174-103. Brandeis defeated Babson 176-95 and Smith 154-135 as the Pioneers handed the Beavers a 198-91 setback.
Edwardson touched the wall first in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 1:10.37 and 2:35.27. Senior Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT) was just under a half second behind in the 100. The 200-yard medley relay kicked the night off with a victory as senior Julia Bushell (Windham, NH), Eggleston, freshman Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) and seniorEmily Martin (Penfield, NY) raced to a winning time of 1:54.27. Wang went on to claim the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:01.07. Martin added a triumph in the 50-yard freestyle (25.46) while junior Thea Reymann (Toms River, NJ) claimed the 100-yard freestyle (56.10) and junior Jennifer Day (Chelmsford, MA) set the pace in the 500-yard freestyle (5:21.41). Martin, Reymann, Day and Wang closed out the meet with the fastest time (1:43.50) in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Senior Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH) was second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.18) and freshman Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) was the runner up in the 200 yard version of the event. Freshman Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) earned silver with a 2:04.56 in the 200-yard freestyle while junior Emily Matsco (Windham, NH) handed in a second-place time of 11:20.23 in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
Junior Kristen Bender (Simi Valley, CA) earned silver on the 3-meter board with 271.45 and bronze on the 1-meter board 236.75 points. Freshman Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK) had the third-best time in the 200-yard IM (2:21.95).
The Engineers (3-0) head to RPI tomorrow for a 1pm start. Babson (0-4) travels to Norwich next Saturday for a 1pm double-dual with Regis. Brandeis (2-5) hosts Bentley Friday, November 18 at 6pm. Smith (1-3) entertains Springfield Tuesday at 8pm.
