Stanford's Umbach Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Gray Umbach was one of two Stanford student-athletes awarded NCAA postgraduate scholarships following the winter season. The Cardinal adds to its four winners after the fall season, with spring scholarships set to be announced at a later date.

Umbach, a native of The Woodlands, Texas, boasts a 3.99 grade-point average in chemical engineering and is a 14-time top-10 finisher at the Pac-12 Championships. Earlier this season, Umbach was named Pac-12 Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

A four-time competitor at the NCAA Championships, Umbach was named All-America in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 2013 and in the 400-yard medley relay in 2015. In 2016, he earned All-America honors in the 800 free relay and the 200-yard butterfly. He is also a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic first team selection.

Justin Brinkley (track and field) was Stanford’s other recipient of the scholarship.

NCAA postgraduate scholarship winners receive a one-time grant of $7,500. To qualify, the student-athletes must be in their final year of eligibility and plan to pursue graduate studies within the next three years. They must also maintain at least a 3.2 grade-point average, have performed with distinction as a member of their varsity team and be nominated by their institution's faculty athletics representative.
