Georgia swimmers Hali Flickinger and Ty Stewart have been chosen as 2016 recipients of NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, according to an announcement Monday by the NCAA.
Flickinger and Stewart each will receive a $7,500 Postgraduate Scholarship from the NCAA, which awards 87 to women and 87 to men annually. The Georgia swimming and diving program has produced 36 recipients (27 women, nine men) of an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, garnering more than $200,000. Dating back to 1965, Georgia’s overall athletic program has 75 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients.
Flickinger, a senior from Spring Grove, Pa., was an integral part of three NCAA and SEC titles during her career. She set school records in the 200 butterfly, 200 backstroke and 800 freestyle relay and ranked in the top 10 in six additional individual events. A 14-time All-American, Flickinger is a member of the United States National Team. A Finance major, she is a three-time Scholar All-American as announced by the College Swim Coaches of America. Flickinger twice has been chosen as the recipient of UGA swimming and diving’s Scholar Athlete Award.
“Hali has done an exceptional job with a tough major,” Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said. “She approaches school the same way she approaches swimming — with hard work every day. She consistently gets the job done in and out of the water. She has worked very hard for this award. It was one of her goals after her freshman year to go after it. Anytime Hali sets a goal for herself, she’ll do whatever it takes to attain it.”
Stewart, a senior from Hattiesburg, Miss., scored in the 100 and 200 butterfly and the 200 individual medley at the SECs and participated in those events at the NCAAs. A seven-time All-American, he ended his career as the school record holder in the 200 backstroke. Stewart was chosen as the Co-Male Scholar Athlete of the Year in the SEC for swimming and diving. He is a three-time Scholar All-American, a two-time Elite 89 Award winner for the top grade point at the national meet, and the 2015-16 recipient of the Joel Eaves Award as UGA’s senior student-athlete with the highest GPA. Last week, Stewart was chosen for the Academic All-District IV At-Large Team. Stewart is a participant in the UGA Honors Program and will graduate in December with degrees in English and Cognitive Science.
“Ty is one of the most academically proficient student-athletes we’ve had at Georgia in any sport,” Bauerle said. “It is part of his everyday schedule to learn, and not just in his field of study, as he’s interested in everything. He is highly thought of by the faculty, which speaks volumes about him. This recognition is a tribute to Ty and his family.”
