Smoliga's 50 Win Puts Bulldogs Back in Lead

At the start of the night, two-thirds of the American and US Open Records in individual events were held by swimmers who hadn't even begun college yet.  Nothing in the morning or the 200 Freestyle Relay indicated that the record-board would undergo any changes.  Olivia Smoliga, however, saw to it that wasn't hte case, however.  While incoming Cal freshman Abby Weitzeil held onto her American record, Smoliga slipped under Lara Jackson's NCAA record with a 21.21.

Smoliga was a full quarter-second quicker than Cal's Farida Osman.  Osman caught Ohio State's Liz Li at the wall to get third with a 21.46.  Li's 21.48, however, gave the Buckeye's their highest swimming place since Janelle Bosse won the 400 IM in 1987.
