Four Longhorns Earn Wins at Elite Invite

Joseph Schooling’s win over Olympic champion Michael Phelps in the 100m butterfly and victories from Madisyn Cox, Will Licon and Clark Smith highlighted night one for the Longhorns Friday at the Longhorn Aquatics Elite Invite.
 
Schooling posted the world’s No. 7 time this year in the 100m butterfly final and knocked off the event’s three-time defending Olympic champion.  Schooling, who is bound for the Rio Olympics after representing Singapore at the 2012 London Olympics, took the win at 51.58 while Phelps settled for second at 51.65. 
 
All-America rising senior Jack Conger placed third just behind Phelps at 51.72 while former Longhorn Tripp Cooper took fourth at 53.03.  UT rising senior Will Glass added a sixth-place mark of 53.25. 
 
UT rising senior Madisyn Cox led a one-two Texas finish in the 200m breaststroke championship final where the Lubbock native took the win in 2:28.31.  Laura Sogar, a former NCAA champion for Texas in the 200-yard breaststroke, placed second at 2:28.80, and UT rising sophomore Olivia Anderson took fourth at 2:32.03. 
 
Texas rising senior Clark Smith notched the No. 2 time in the country this year in the 400m freestyle and won in 3:48.08.  Former Longhorn Michael McBroom took second at 3:51.17 while UT rising sophomore Townley Haas took fourth at 3:51.94.  Texas rising senior Jonathan Roberts placed fifth at 3:53.94. 
 
Licon posted the No. 3 time in the nation this season, as the El Paso native took the win in the 200m breaststroke at 2:10.68.  Junior Hayden Henry and freshman Casey Melzer earned their U.S. Olympic Trials qualifying cuts at 2:17.59 and 2:17.99, respectively. 
 
UT rising sophomore Joanna Evans led the Texas women with her fifth-place showing in the 400m freestyle championship final at 4:12.39.  Sophomore Quinn Carrozza placed sixth at 4:17.04. 
 
UT rising junior Rebecca Millard placed third in the 100m freestyle championship final at 56.04.  Texas rising sophomore Remedy Rule clocked a third-place mark of 1:01.32 in the 100m butterfly while rising junior Mimi Schneider took fourth at 1:01.96.  Rising senior Brynne Wong placed fifth at 1:02.11. 
 
Conger took Phelps to the wire in the 100m freestyle and took a close second, just one one-hundredth of a second behind Phelps at 49.50.  Former Longhorn Clay Youngquist took fourth at 50.09 while UT rising senior P.J. Dunne took sixth at 50.58. 
 
Day two of the Longhorn Aquatics Elite Invite gets underway Saturday with preliminaries at 9:30 a.m. CT.  Longhorn Network picks up live coverage of finals at 6:30 p.m. CT with Paul Sunderland (play-by-play) and Aaron Peirsol (analyst) on the call.
