UMass Splits with Fordham

The UMass swimming and diving programs split their final home dual matches against Fordham on Saturday with the men's team picking up a 179-114 win, while the women's team fell 171-124 at Joseph R. Rogers Pool.

Prior to the start of the meet, UMass honored the 10 members of its women's senior class along with the six members of its men's senior class.

On the women's side, UMass was led by a pair of event wins from Meriza Werenski and Emma Roush. Werenski won both the 1,000 freestyle (10:39.37) and 200 individual medley (2:07.70), while Roush won the one-meter (247.80) and three-meter (263.25) dives.

The men were led by 10 first place finishes in individual events with Wiktor Karpinski winning the 50 free (20.67) and the 100 free (45.82). As a team, the Minutemen picked up big points in the 50 free and 100 back taking the top three spots in each.

Other highlights for the Minutewomen included second place finishes for Rebecca Quirie in the 100 back (58.95) and Ansley Baker in the 100 breast (1:07.99). The divers continued their strong season as Katie Polk placed second in both the one-meter (246.83) and three-meter (258.23) events, while Julia Jagannath placed third on the three-meter (247.13).

For the men, Brian Stiles (200 free, 1:41.24), Kellen Gray (100 back, 51.07), Oliver Wyeth (200 back, 1:51.10), Alex Mesisca (100 breast, 1:00.21), Alex D'Anna (200 breast, 2:14.37), Trent Kindvall (1-meter dive, 276.59), Heath Maginn (200 IM, 1:58.89), and Robert Barry (3-meter dive, 300.38) all won individual events on the afternoon. 

Stiles also added a pair of second place finishes in the 50 free and 100 free, while D'Anna (100 breast), Patterson (100 back), Maginn (200 back), Barry (1-meter dive), and Trent Kindvall (3-meter dive) all added second place finishes. Kyle Vieira rounded out the top performers with a pair of second place finishes in the 500 and 1,000 free style.

Both the men's and women's teams will have one final tune-up before the Atlantic 10 Championships. The squads will head to the UConn Invitational next Saturday, Feb. 6 with the events beginning at 10 a.m.
