Albion Defeats Olivet

Albion College achieved a 4-1 record against its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rivals in dual meets when it defeated Olivet College, 230-42, Saturday afternoon.

To make the day better, Nate Kozycki and Gerardo Huidobro finished one-two in the 100-yard butterfly, Sebastian Tostado and Kozycki were the top two finishers in the 200 individual medley and a new combination (Lucas Harder, Troy Trombley, Tom Parsons and Derek Bosko) won the 200 freestyle relay as Albion surged for a 156-141 victory over the College of Wooster in the double dual meet.

“Being this close to the MIAA Championships, it was good to get quality races out of both the men’s and women’s sides,” Albion Head Coach Jake Taber said. “Harder keeps telling me he is a sprinter and we got a solid split from Trombley (in the relay).”

Tostado achieved Olivet pool records in all three of his individual events. He posted times of 46.90 in the 100 freestyle, 1:44.51 in the 200 freestyle, and 1:57.69 in the 200 IM.

Albion was third in the freestyle relay after Harder’s 23.15 split, but the Britons made up time when Trombley completed his leg in 22.39. Parsons had the fastest split at 21.10 and Bosko swam the anchor in 22.12 for a total time of 1:28.76 as the Britons edged Wooster by a half second.

Albion also got first place swims from Kyle Harvey in the mile (17:28.50), Harder in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.75), and Bosko in the 50 freestyle (21.60).

Almost lost in the swimming results was another school record for first-year diver Jake Burris. He achieved a total of 313.85 in the 1-meter event and now owns the school records for six dives on both boards. He also achieved a first-place score of 319.75 on 3-meter.

Anna Moore continued her impressive first season at the collegiate level, turning in first place performances in two events, as Albion College split its Saturday dual meets in women’s swimming & diving.

Albion overmatched Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Olivet College, 222-49. The College of Wooster handed Albion a 165-120 setback.

Moore completed the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.54, winning the event by 2.3 seconds over Wooster’s Maggie Layde. Moore also took first place in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 2:11.59.

Moore also helped Albion to first place in the 200 freestyle relay. Joined by Kylene Slocum, Anna Hargrove and Lauren Pawelec, the Britons achieved a time of 1:41.79.

Sarah Kilbride gained Albion’s other individual first place performance, leading a one-two finish in the 200 individual medley. Kilbride finished in 2:19.23, ahead of teammate Mary Noble 2:20.66. Kilbride also scored a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke.

Noble also finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:02.80) and third in the 200 freestyle (2:04.77).

In other swimming events, Katie Ferrero was second in the 1,650 freestyle (17:52.44), Haley Wallis and Jourden Burke were second and third in the 100 backstroke, Abigail Slager and Madi Vaive were second and third in the 50 freestyle, and Slocum, Camilla Manrique and Syriah Dobis were second, third and fourth in the 100 freestyle.

In diving, Lauren Young achieved a personal-best score of 197.35 in the 1-meter competition.
