Carleton Men Tie Saint John's; Women Fall to Saint Benedict

Carleton Men

The Carleton College men’s swim broke the Thorpe Pool record in the final event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay, and ended up finishing in a tie with Saint John’s University during a dual meet on Saturday. Karl Schwarzkopf (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis Southwest), Stephen Grinich (Sr./McMinnville, Ore./McMinnville), Wilson Josephson (Sr./Mount Hermon, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon), and George McAneny (Sr./Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz) closed the meet with a pool-record time of 1:25.46 as the two squads ended up with 150 points apiece.

“This was exactly the kind of meet we were hoping to have today, one where all teams needed to perform at a high level throughout every event,” said Carleton head coach Andy Clark. “The Johnnies and Blazers are both very talented, but so are our squads. Both sides knew it would be a close one today. While a win is always an ideal outcome, I could not be more pleased and impressed with how well our swimmers and divers performed today.”

Colin Lau (So./Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) received the Knights’ “Can of Corn” award as the swimmer of the meet. He touched the wall first in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing in 2:01.42. As it turns out, he added critical points with his second-place result in the 200-yard breaststroke, an event in which he does not typically compete.

Carleton opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. Schwarzkopf, Tiernan Foster-Smith (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School), Grinich, and McAneny posted a time of 1:37.20.

Josephson won two individual events, the 200 freestyle with his time of 1:46.66 and the 500-yard freestyle at 5:09.60.

With a time of 1:00.52, Noah Brackenbury (So./Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) topped Foster-Smith and the rest of the field in the 100-yard breaststroke. Brackenbury added a second victory in the 200-yard breaststroke when he posted a time of 2:18.48.

In addition to the two relay victories, Grinich won the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly with his times of 21.35 and 52.00, respectively.

Carleton closes out the home portion of the 2015-16 season next Saturday, Jan. 30 with an 11 a.m. dual meet against cross-town rival St. Olaf College.

Carleton Women

The Carleton College women’s swimming and diving team won five events but came up just short against the College of Saint Benedict, dropping a dual meet at Thorpe Pool by a 147-134 tally.

Diver Phoebe Smith (Fy./Dallas, Texas) was selected as the Knights’ performer of the meet, earning her the prestigious “Can of Corn” Award after posting personal bests on both the 1- and 3-meter boards with scores of 176.35 and 195.00, respectively.

Alex Braiedy (Jr./Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) captured first place in the 100-yard butterfly with her time of 1:02.40. She finished second as teammate Halie Langanki (Sr./Lino Lakes, Minn./Mounds View) led a Carleton 1-2-3 result in the 200-yard butterfly by posting a winning time of 2:20.71.

She and Allie Clark (Jr./Northfield, Minn./Northfield) went 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke, with Wetzel notching a winning time of 59.76. Wetzel later added a first-place result in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:17.65, good for a nearly 14-second margin of victory. She closed her portion of the meet by winning the 200-yard IM in 2:12.53.
