Texas Grabs Big Leads at Big 12's

For the second consecutive day, the Texas Longhorns swept all events at the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship. The dominating performance helped propel both UT’s men’s and women’s side into the top spots in the team standings.

Through day two, the Texas men have 363 points, while West Virginia and TCU sit in second and third with 281 and 227 points, respectively. On the women’s side, UT leads the way with 376 points, followed by Iowa State with 203.5 points and Kansas with 200.5. West Virginia and TCU round out the women’s standing with 171 and 150 tallies.

In the pool, multiple records fell in both the men’s and women’s 400 medley relay. The Texas women’s medley consisting of Tsija Karosas, Madisyn Cox, Mimi Schneider and Rebecca Millard, took down a four year of conference record, set in 2011, with a time of 3:30.43. The UT men, John Shebat, Will Licon, Joseph Schooling and Jack Conger, set a new Big 12 Swimming and Diving championship meet record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:04.64. The quad took down a record set in 2009.

Earlier in the evening Texas’ Joanna Evans (4:39.97) took the women’s 500 freestyle, while Townley Haas (4:12.63) earned the gold in the men’s 500 freestyle. The Longhorns also swept the 200 individual medley, with Madisyn Cox (1:54.31) setting a new Big 12 Championship meet record. Will Licon triumphed in the event with a time of 1:42.85.

Texas’ domination continued into the 50 free finals, as Rebecca Millard (22.20) took the women’s title and Tate Jackson (19.25) took the men’s.

To round out the evening the Longhorns swept the podium in the women’s one meter dive. Meghan Houston (321.30), Meghan O’Brien (314.85) and Sofia Rauzi (294.95) took gold, silver and bronze.

Day three of competition kicks off with the preliminary rounds at 10:00 a.m. CT. Finals kick off at 5:00 p.m. CT.
