A couple pool records and a conference record were broken on Friday night, as four different schools won events at the 2016 Men's Swimming and Diving Championship.
NC State extended their lead, sitting in first with a total of 928 points. Louisville took over second with 785.5 points, and North Carolina is in third with 639.5. Virginia Tech (600) and Virginia (483) round out the top five.
The Louisville 400 medley relay squad took gold in the event for the second straight year. The team of Grigory Tarasevich, Carlos Claverie, Pedro Coutinho and Trevor Carroll turned in a winning time of 3:04.90. Tarasevich also won the 100 back stroke, setting a new conference record in 45.28.
NC State's Derek Hren won the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 52.27, just .01 ahead of Virginia Tech's Brandon Fiala. The Wolfpack swept the 200 freestyle, as Simonas Bilis set a new pool record in 1:32.46. Bilis was joined on the podium by teammates Soeren Dahl and Ryan Held to placed second and third, respectively.
Samuel Lewis of North Carolina took gold in the 100 butterfly, and Virginia Tech's Robert Owen won the 400 individual medley, setting a new pool record in the process with a time of 3:41.08.
The 2016 ACC Swimming & Diving Championships resume Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries in the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, and the 200 butterfly. The finals for those events, in addition to the final heat of the 1650 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay begin at 6 p.m.
400 Medley Relay
For the second straight year the Louisville team took gold in the 400 medley relay. The lineup of Grigory Tarasevich, Carlos Claverie, Pedro Coutinho and Trevor Carroll turned in a winning time of 3:04.90.
North Carolina State came in second at 3:06.25, and North Carolina finished third with a time of 3:07.96.
100 Backstroke
Louisville's Grigory Tarasevich set a new conference record in the 100 backstroke, taking the gold in 45.28.
"It was kind of unexpected (to set the conference record), but it was certainly one of the secondary goals," Tarasevich said.
Andreas Schiellerup of NC State finished second in 45.87. His Wolfpack teammate, Hennessey Stuart, took third with a time of 45.92.
100 Breaststroke
The finish couldn't have been closer in the 100 breaststroke, as NC State's Derek Hren won the event in 52.27.
Hren was just .01 ahead of Brandon Fiala of Virginia Tech, who finished in 52.28.
Louisville's Carlos Claverie was close behind, finishing third with a 52.41.
200 Freestyle
It was an NC State sweep in the 200 freestyle as Simonas Bilis set a new pool record, winning the event in 1:32.46. It was Bilis' second straight win in the event.
"It's just amazing for the whole team," Bilis said. "I didn't really care if I touched the wall first as long as one of us did."
Soeren Dahl finished in 1:32.88 for silver, and Ryan Held clocked a 1:32.97 to round out the podium.
All three are NCAA automatic qualifying times.
100 Butterfly
North Carolina's Samuel Lewis took the gold in the 100 butterfly, finishing in 45.77.
Justin Plaschka of Notre Dame finished second, checking in at 46.37.
Louisville's Pedro Coutinho, the 2015 champion in the event, took third with a time of 46.46.
400 Individual Medley
Robert Owen won the 400 individual medley for the Virginia Tech Hokies, his second straight gold in the event. The junior set a new pool record with a time of 3:41.08, holding off Louisville's Nolan Tesone who finished in 3:41.41.
"I knew it would be really close and I just thought 'I gotta give it everything I got'," Owen said.
North Carolina's Christian McCurdy finished third in 3:44.06.
