Denver Dominating Summit League Meet

With the conclusion of third day of the 2016 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships, the Denver men's and women's teams extended its lead in both team races. The women’s team won all six swimming events of the evening with the men’s side taking home five of the six events. Two new all-time league records were set Friday night and IUPUI freshman diver Krisztian Somhegyi became the first Jaguar diver to sweep both boards in a single championship since 2004.

IUPUI remains second in the men’s team race, followed by South Dakota State in third. SDSU passed IUPUI on the women’s side are now in second place with the Jaguars in third.

The Pioneer men’s 400 medley relay squad began the night by smashing the event’s record that had been around since 2009 when they posted 3:09.55. In the morning preliminary session, Denver sophomore Maddie Myers broke her own Summit League in the 400 IM, but the record didn’t last long. Freshman teammate Bailey Andison won the evening’s final, besting Myers’ time by more than four seconds (4:08.35).

Denver’s Ray Bornman (200 freestyle) and Tim Cottam (100 breaststroke) each defended their Summit League title in their respective events. Fellow Pioneers Amanda Sanders (100 breast) and Morgan Mullenix (200 free) each completed their three-peat, winning their events for the third consecutive season.

Chris Neaveill became Western Illinois’ first champion of the meet, and first league swimming champion since 2007, when he touched the wall first in the men’s 100 butterfly. The Leathernecks’ men’s 400 medley relay finished third, earning all-league honors.

IUPUI’s Maranda Buha and Alexis Bullard each earned all-league honors by placing second and third, respectively, in the women’s 100 butterfly. The Jags also picked up all-league recognition in the men’s 400 medley relay (second), Jonathon Stoller (third, 100 breaststroke) and Mitch Mastey (second, one-meter dive).

South Dakota State found its way onto the medal stand twice in the women’s 100 breaststroke with Kristin Erf’s second-place and Kayce Smith’s third-place finishes. The Jackrabbits also collected all-league honors with their third-place finish in the women’s 400 medley relay.
