Incarnate Word Men, Florida Gulf Coast Women Continue to Lead at CCSA's

CCSA Men's Race

The Incarnate Word men’s swimming and diving team is in first place with 548 points after the first day of the 2016 CCSA Swimming and Diving Championship at University of Georgia’s Gabrielson Natatorium.
 
UMBC is second with 529 points and Old Dominion is third with 524.50 points.  Gardner-Webb is fourth with 394 points, while Florida Atlantic is fifth with 345 points.  NJIT is in sixth with 219.50 points and Howard is in seventh with 154 points, followed by VMI with 134 points.
 
In the 500-yard freestyle Incarnate Word’s Kyrylo Shvets took first place with a time of 4:25.51 followed by UMBC freshman Felix Richtsfeld who swam in 4:26.26. Connor Hennessy of Incarnate Word finished in 4:27.84 to place third.
 
Incarnate Word junior, David Moore, claimed first place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:45.68. Nikola Trajkovic of UMBC finished in 1:46.63 to notch second place. Old Dominion standout, Reed Matthews, saw a third place finish for the Monarchs with a time of 1:47.14, while teammate Anton Mikaelsson placed fourth in 1:47.29. All four swimmers qualified made the NCAA ‘B’ cut list.
 
Senior Nathan Lile of Gardner-Webb eclipsed the NCAA ‘B’ cut list standard in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.98. Old Dominion’s Jacob Zeidler finished just behind Lile in 20.26. Florida Atlantic teammates, Matthieu Burtez and John Nolte tied for third as they finished in 20.46.
 
The Runnin’ Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb snatched the 200-yard freestyle relay as they were led by Nathan Lile, Connor Bos, Tyler Gomez and Hal McKay with a time of 1:20.07. Old Dominion reached second place in 1:20.12 with swimmers Jacob Zeildler, Anton Mikaelsson, Graham Thatcher and Vitor Sa.
 
Once again, Ryan McIntire, of Florida Atlantic set a CCSA Championship meet record, this time off of the 3-meter board in the preliminary round, with a score of 348.35. McIntire’s final round score of 347.55 was enough to take home the gold medal. Old Dominion claimed second and third place as Cory Moreno and Daniel Rabe scored 343.95 and 339.75, respectively.
 
The CCSA Championship will continue with the third day of action on Friday, Feb. 19 at 10:00 a.m., starting with the 400-yard Individual Medley preliminary.  The event finals for day three will start at 6:00 p.m.


CCSA Women's Race

The Florida Gulf Coast women’s swimming and diving team remains in first place with 610 points after the second day of competition at the 2016 CCSA Swimming and Diving Championship at the University of Georgia’s Gabrielson Natatorium.
 
Liberty is second with 468 points and Georgia Southern is third with 349 points.  Gardner-Webb is fourth with 277 points, while Incarnate Word is fifth with 266 points.  Campbell is in sixth with 257 points and North Florida is in seventh with 188 points.  Behind North Florida is UNCA with 173 points and N.C. A&T is ninth with 106 points.  VMI is in tenth place with 100 points, while Howard sits in eleventh with 80 points.
 
In the 500-yard freestyle, FGCU senior Lani Cabrera took the victory with a NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 4:47.53. Cabrera’s time was good enough to break the CCSA Championship meet record set by former FGCU standout, Leah Daniel who swam in 4:48.22. The FGCU senior missed her own all-time CCSA record by one-tenth of a second, set this past November. Cabrera’s teammate, Linda Shaw, also broke Daniel’s meet record to notch second place with a time of 4:48.17. Liberty’s Kristin VanDeventer placed third with a time of 4:52.00, which was good for ninth all-time in CCSA history.
 
FGCU once again rewrote history in the 200 individual medley as freshman Fanny Teijonsalo stayed below the two minute mark and broke her own CCSA all-time record of 2:00.08, which was set in preliminaries earlier in the morning, with a time of 1:58.29. FGCU’s Barbara Caraballo also held her time under two minutes as the junior finished in 1:59.64 to move into second place all-time in the CCSA. Christinia Elmgreen, also of FGCU, swam in 2:01.02 to place third, while Gardner-Webb’s London Schumacher notched fourth with a time of 2:01.54. All top-four finishers in today’s 200 individual medley placed NCAA ‘B’ cut times.
 
In the 50-yard freestyle, FGCU freshman Katie Latham took first place with a time of 22.64 and claimed seventh all-time in the CCSA record book. Liberty’s Kendall Hough placed second in 22.67, while teammate Rachel Hoeve took third with a time of 22.99. All three swimmers placed NCAA ‘B’ cut times.
 
FGCU’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Fanny Teijonsalo, Barbara Caraballo, Sara Hamilton and Katie Latham saw first place with a time of 1:30.62. Liberty’s Kendall Hough, Rachel Hoeve, Chelsea Pond and Prudence Rooker swam in 1:31.08 to place second. Campbell senior, Michelle Case, led Sindija Silina, Alice Rigback and Kat Costin to a third place finish for the Camels in 1:33.77.
 
The CCSA Championship will continue with the third day of action on Friday, Feb. 19 at 10:00 a.m., starting with the 400-yard individual medley preliminary.  The event finals for day three will start at 6:00 p.m.
