Nevada leads the team scoring through day one of the 2016 Mountain West Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Texas A&M Natatorium in College Station, Texas with 129 points through three events. Boise State is in second with 91 points, followed by San Diego State with 86 points. San José State and UNLV are currently in fourth and fifth place, respectively, with 72 and 64 points. Colorado State is in sixth with 56 points, followed by Wyoming (51), Air Force (48), Fresno State (38) and New Mexico (24).
Nevada jumped out to the lead on Wednesday night with all four divers finishing in the top six spots on the 1-meter springboard. Freshman Sharae Zheng won the event with a score of 334.25, followed by senior Krysta Palmer, the 2015 champion, in second place with a 331.50. Freshman Toma Shmitova placed fourth with a 294.20 and rookie Zoe Lei posted a 288.70 for sixth place. San Diego State sophomore Alexandra Caplan finished third with a 330.15 and San José State sophomore Cari Reiswig placed fifth at 289.05.
Nevada senior Krysta Palmer set a MW Championship record during the 1-meter springboard preliminary round on Wednesday afternoon with the top score of 338.35, surpassing the previous record she set of 336.30 in the 2015 finals.
Boise State won the 200-yard medley relay with an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 1:37.63, just .03 off the Conference record (1:37.60) set by San Diego State at last year’s Championship meet. The mark was a Broncos’ program record.
Boise State and Nevada finished 1-2 in the 800-yard freestyle relay with NCAA automatic-qualifying marks. The Broncos set an MW record in the event at 7:04.60, followed by the Wolf Pack at 7:05.98. These are the top two times in Conference history in the 800-free relay.
Day two begins with the 500-yard freestyle preliminaries at 11 a.m. CT. The finals competition starts at 6:30 p.m. CT with the 200-yard freestyle relay. The 2016 MW Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships conclude Saturday, February 20.
