IUPUI Men, Denver Men Take Early Lead at Summit League Meet

The 2016 Summit League Swimming and Diving Championships began Wednesday night at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI. Four league records were broken as five event champions were crowned on opening night of the four-day meet.

IUPUI men lead the way with 134 points after a dominate performance on the three-meter board. The Jaguars are followed by South Dakota State (106) in second and Denver (88) in third. Denver leads on the women’s side after sweeping both of the evening’s relay events with 80 points while South Dakota State (66) and IUPUI (62) follow closely behind.

IUPUI freshman diver Krisztian Somhegyi set a new league record of 354.70 in the three-meter board while diving in his first career Summit League championship. The Jaguars placed four divers in the top six of in the men’s three-meter final.

The Pioneers of Denver took first-place points in all four relays swam in the evening for the third straight year, with both men’s relay teams (200 medley, 800 freestyle) setting new championship meet records in the process.

The championship meet continues Thursday, Feb. 18 with prelims beginning at 11 a.m. ET and finals set for 6 p.m.

News & Notes

The Denver men’s 200 medley relay team set a new Summit League Championship meet record with their winning time of 1:27.16. However, the mark was not a season best for the quartet.

IUPUI freshman diver Krisztian Somhegyi claimed his first career Summit League title with his meet record score of 354.70 in the three-meter board. His new career-best mark ranks No. 4 in league history.

Denver’s men’s 800 freestyle relay team set a new all-time Summit League record with its time of 6:23.58.

IUPUI’s men’s 200 medley (2nd) and 800 freestyle (3rd) relay teams finished with all-league honors.

South Dakota State’s women’s relays (200 medley, 800 free) each finished in the top three.

Zoe Huddleston of Denver set a new 200 freestyle record with her lead leg time of 1:46.31 in the women’s 800 free relay final.
