Florida Men, Tennessee Women After Day Two at SEC's

The Florida men and the Tennessee women take the lead at the 2016 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships after day two of the event at the Mizzou Aquatics Center on the campus of the University of Missouri.
 
On the men’s side, Florida is in first place with 504 points, while Auburn holds onto second with 497 points. For the women, Tennessee has 437.5 points for the top spot, and Georgia sits in second place with 430 points.
 
Brittany MacLean of Georgia set the SEC record in the women’s 500 freestyle, touching in wall first in a time of 4:33.10. Teammate Hali Flickinger took second place with a time of 4:33.90. Sarah Gibson of Texas A&M placed third with a time of 4:39.61.
 
Florida’s Pawel Werner took first in the men’s 500 freestyle with a winning time of 4:13.31. South Carolina’s Akaram Mahmoud came in second (4:13.48), while Florida’s Mitch D’Arrigo finished third (4:13.92).
 
In the women’s 200 IM, Lisa Bratton of Texas A&M set a pool record with her winning time of 1:54.97. Fellow Aggie Bethany Galat came in second (1:55.86), and Meaghan Raab of Georgia took third (1:55.99).
 
A pool record was also set in the men’s 200 IM, as Joe Patching of Auburn won the event with a time of 1:42.21. Florida took the next two podium spots as Jan Switkowski came in second with a time of 1:42.55 and Mark Szaranek took third with a time of 1:42.64.
 
First place in the women’s 50 free went to Georgia’s Olivia Smoliga, who posted a final time of 21.67, good for the pool record. Second and third places went to Tennessee’s Faith Johnson (21.95) and Madeline Banic (21.96).
 
In prelims for the men’s 50 free, Florida’s Caeleb Dressel posted a time of 18.39, besting the SEC, NCAA, American and U.S. Open records with his finish. He then topped that in the A finals, touching the wall first in a time of 18.23. Peter Holoda of Auburn took second (19.17) and Michael Chadwick of Missouri finished third (19.23).
 
In the men’s 1-meter springboard, Mauricio Robles defended his title as he claimed the top spot with a final score of 459.75. Clark Thomas of Missouri finished second with a score of 429.40, while Sam Thornton of Texas A&M placed third with a score of 391.95.
 
The foursome of Johnson, Harper Bruens, Banic and Kira Toussaint from Tennessee won the women’s 200 free relay with a time of 1:27.36. On the men’s side, the quartet of Corey Main, Szaranek, Dressel and Jack Blyzinskyj from Florida set a pool record by winning the SEC title with a final time of 1:16.46.
 
The 2016 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships continues on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. CT with the preliminaries for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free and the women’s 3-meter diving, followed by the finals of those four events starting at 6 p.m. CT. Both sessions can be viewed on SEC Network+.
