WPI, Tufts, Williams, Wesleyan Battle on Saturday

WPI, Tufts, Williams and Wesleyan competed on Saturday in a close affair.

Middletown, CT --- Junior Kristen Bender (Simi Valley, CA) was second and fourth in the diving events as the WPI women’s swimming & diving team fell to Tufts (221-100), Williams (241-80) and host Wesleyan (165-153) Saturday.

Bender posted a 238.75 on the 1-meter to claim second and a 236.85 on the 3-meter to take fourth for the Engineers. Junior Jennifer Day (Chelmsford, MA) paced the swimmers with third-place times in the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.92) and 400-yard IM (4:45.07).

Freshman Carol Wang (Framingham, MA) was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.90) as was senior Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) in the 100-yard freestyle and junior Allysa Grant (Framingham, MA) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.91). Martin and Grant each had a sixth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (25.69) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.17) while Wang was 11th in the 50-yard butterfly (27.95). Senior Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT) came home sixth in the 50-yard breaststroke (33.05).

The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Day, junior Thea Reymann (Toms River, NJ), senior Tori Claverie (Derry, NH) and Martin collaborated to place fifth in a time of 3:42.49.
Freshman Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) was the quickest Engineer in the backstroke sprints with an eighth-place 1:03.79 in the 100, a ninth-place 2:16.87 in the 200 and a 13th-place 29.99 in the 50. Rookie Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA) was ninth in the 500-yard freestyle and senior Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) added a ninth-place time in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.22).

The Engineers are off until Wednesday, January 18th with a 6:30pm home meet versus Wheaton and UMass Dartmouth.

Middletown, CT --- Senior Tim Petri (Eksjö, Sweden) won three events, broke two of his own records and bettered a B cut as No. 25 WPI competed against host Wesleyan, No. 9 Williams and No. 18 Tufts in a Saturday afternoon meet. The Engineers defeated the nationally-ranked Jumbos (183.50-137.50) and host Cardinals (247-69) but were edged by the nationally-ranked Ephs (170-151).

Petri began by cutting .26 off his 50-yard breaststroke record with a 26.07. He then led a trio of Engineers to a 1-2-3 finish and broke his own record in the 100 with a B cut time of 56.49. Petri capped it off with another B cut performance in the 200 with a 2:04.58, just a tenth slower than last week. Freshman Dave Chen (East Lyme, CT) and senior Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY) represented the second (58.63) and third place (59.04) finishers in the 100. Sophomore Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) claimed the 50-yard butterfly (23.11) as classmate Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) secured the 100-yard butterfly (50.81). Bauer also placed second in the 50-yard and third in the 100-yard backstroke with times of 24.33 and 52.86.

Senior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) was the runner up in the 100-yard (47.10) and 200-yard (1:44.26) freestyles, and third in the 50-yard freestyle (21.68). Sophomore Alex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) handed in a 4:13.25 to finish second in the 400-yard IM and senior Seth MacDonald's (Sherrill, NY) touched the wall second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.29).

The foursome of Kelleher, junior Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt), Bauer and senior Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) placed third in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a 3:09.32. Senior Matt Houghton (Berkley, MA) and junior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) finished third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:54.54) and 1-meter dive (239.85). Senior Matt Suarez (Needham, MA) accumulated fourth-place points in the 3-meter dive (216.40) and freshman Markus Zimmermann’s (Sammamish, WA) 4:49.27 was good for fourth in the 500-yard freestyle.

WPI returns to action on Wednesday, January 18 with a 6:30pm home meet with Wheaton and UMass Dartmouth.
