USMMA Claims Wins Against St. Joseph's, Old Westbury

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2016) – On Friday night, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women’s swimming team opened up its dual-meet season with a pair of Skyline Conference victories over St. Joseph’s (Long Island) and Old Westbury. The Mariners defeated the SJC Bears, 64-31, and triumphed over Old Westbury, 86-8.

Senior Catherine Don (Quincy, Ill.) led USMMA with two individual wins on the night, as she touched first in the 200 freestyle (2:11.20) and the 200 butterfly (season best time of 2:35.61).

Also picking up individual wins were sophomore Ella Sherrill (Ketchikan, Alaska) with a great performance in the 200 individual medley (2:25.74), senior Jolyn Green (Riverside, Calif.) in the 200 backstroke (2:30.17). A pair of freshman earned their first collegiate victories, as Erica Lou (Flushing, N.Y.) touched first in the 500 free in 6:01.56 and Sara Cosenza (Peoria, Ariz.) won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:58.63.

Both Mariner relay teams won with the 200 medley relay squad of freshman Meika Gathy (Waterford, Conn.), Lou, freshman Fallon Wulff (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Sherrill was victorious in 2:00.98 and the 200 free relay team of Gathy, Green, Sherrill and Lou won in 1:48.01.

The Mariners are right back at it tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 10, when they travel up to Bronxville, N.Y., to take on Skyline opponents Sarah Lawrence and Purchase in another conference double dual-meet. Action is set to get underway at 1:30 p.m. at the Gryphons’ Campbell Sports Center Pool.

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2016) – The USMMA men’s swimming & diving team opened its dual-meet season with a neutral-site Skyline Conference victory over Old Westbury, 109-44, Friday night at St. Joseph’s College of Long Island.

Individually, the Mariners picked up nine victories. Freshmen Michael Moore (Los Alamos, N.M.), Caelin Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.) and Nolan Monahan (Stafford, Va.) all earned their first collegiate wins on the night, as Moore touched first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:14.90), Weaver won the 200 butterfly (2:04.47) and Monahan claimed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.71).

Senior Joshua Jepsen (San Diego, Calif.) won the 200 free in 1:51.92, classmate John Terselic (Tijera, N.M.) triumphed in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.40, sophomore Christopher Kahl (Solomons, Md.) touched first in the 100 free in 51.21, classmate Logan Propst (Valencia, Calif.) earned a victory in the 200 backstroke (2:14.80), junior Nick Lambson (Knoxville, Tenn.) won the 500 free in 5:24.06 and sophomore Matheus Macedo (Elk Grove, Calif.) beat out the field in the 50 free with a time of 22.74.

The Mariners’ 200 medley relay team of Kahl, Terselic, sophomore Jack Olsen (Milford, N.H.) and Macedo won the first race of the night in 2:00.98 and the 200 free relay squad of Macedo, Moore, freshman Zachary Hermosillo-Deboer (Belleville, Mich.) and Kahl touched first in 1:31.45.

Up next, Merchant Marine will travel up to Bronxville, N.Y., tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 10, for another Skyline Conference dual, this time against Sarah Lawrence College. First race is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Gryphons’ Campbell Sports Center Pool.
