WPI Dominates Gompei Invitational

The WPI men's and women's squads dominated their own Gompei Invitational this weekend.

WORCESTER --- The WPI men’s and women’s swimming teams combined efforts to win five individual events, two relays, post five school records and three B cuts to claim their own Gompei Invitational, which concluded Sunday night. The 2016 format featured combined team scores.

The Engineers totaled 5136.5 points to lead Stevens Institute of Technology (4225), Rowan (4198) and Division I Bryant (3969.5). Division II Bentley was fifth (2641.5) and, despite not having both genders, Division II Assumption finished sixth (2524.5). Roger Williams (2458), Division II Saint Rose (1679), Brandeis (1005.5) and Babson (792.5) rounded out the top 10. Marywood (407), Clark (293) and Division II Merrimack (273) completed the field.

Senior Tim Petri (Eksjö, Sweden) had an excellent weekend by winning the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes trials with record-setting and B cut times of 56.52 and 2:04.48 before turning in gold-medal times of 56.80 and 2:04.63 in the finals. Junior Jennifer Day (Chelmsford, MA) began the weekend by achieving a B cut and resetting her own 1650-yard freestyle record in a runner up time of 17:20.50. Meanwhile, her 1000-yard split of 10:30.04 was 1.09 seconds off that record. SophomoreAlex Gallant (Lakeville, MA) was the favorite after the 100-yard IM prelims and clocked a 52.90 to finish .17 ahead of senior Seth MacDonald’s (Sherrill, NY). MacDonald who entered the weekend with his name on the wall also came in under his 2014 time to place second. The final record to fall was the women’s 100-yard backstroke as senior Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH) shaved .57 off her previous record to claim third place with a 59.03. Sophomore Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI) touched the wall first with a 50.85 in the 100-yard backstroke and a 49.72 in the 100-yard butterfly.

Petri, sophomore Jackson Perry (Cumberland, RI) and senior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) delivered in the 200-yard medley relay (1:31.59) as Jack Bauer, Petri, JuniorKarim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt) and Andrew Bauer took the 400-yard version of the event in a time of 3:22.92. The men’s freestyle relays earned silver as the quartet of Jack Bauer, senior Frederick Burgwardt (Mendon, NY), senior Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY) and Andrew Bauer posted a 1:24.28 in the 200 and the 400 team of Elsayed, Gallant, Jack Bauer and Andrew Bauer handed in a 3:05.79.

Gallant was the runner up in the 200-yard IM (1:54.43) and was followed by MacDonald in sixth (1:56.06). Andrew Bauer took second in the 100-yard freestyle (46.05) and led Burgwardt (fifth– 46.90), Elsayed (sixth – 47.07) and Kelleher (ninth - 47.97). Day took second in the women’s 200-yard butterfly (2:08.36) as senior Emily Martin (Penfield, NY) came home 10th (2:14.72). Senior Matt Houghton (Berkley, MA) tied for second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.40) to go with an eighth-place (1:58.03) swim by freshman Joshua Driscoll (Haverhill, MA), who was bumped up to the A final. Gallant ended up ninth (2:00.14).

Freshman Dave Chen (East Lyme, CT) clocked a fifth-place 55.44 in the 100 IM as sophomore Jean Philippe Miralda (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) was sixth (55.48), Petri was seventh (56.33) and Andrew Bauer was ninth (1:01.06). Andrew Bauer secured bronze in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:44.74 as Elsayed was seventh (1:45.89) in the 200 and eighth (51.43) in the 100-yard butterfly. MacDonald and Jack Bauer placed fourth (1:55.76) and fifth (1:56.23) in the 200-yard butterfly. The women’s 200-yard freestyle relay of junior Thea Reymann (Toms River, NJ), senior Eva Childers (Henniker, NH), Day and Martin handed in a fourth-place time of 1:39.58.

Junior Kristen Bender (Simi Valley, CA) had the top Engineer score in the 3-meter with a 354.40 to take fourth and was fifth (354.25) on the 1-meter after posting a 383.60 in the initial session. JuniorHayley Poskus (Middleboro, MA) improved on her initial set of dives on the 3-meter to record an eighth-place 323.5 and was eight points off her first set with a ninth-place 317.50 on the 1-meter. Junior Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) amassed the best 1-meter total with a sixth-place 388.40, just .15 shy of his prelims score, and ended up seventh on the 3-meter (307.70). Senior Matt Suarez(Needham, MA), meanwhile, boasted the best men’s placing with a fifth-place 336.5 on the 3-meter and totaled 347.50 on the lower board to finish ninth. Freshman Chris Nelson (Millbury, MA) made the 3-meter finals where he improved 11.30 points in the finals with a 10th-place 311.30.

Andrew Bauer was .17 quicker than Jack Bauer in the 50-yard freestyle to take fourth (21.37) and seventh (21.54) as Kelleher came home 10th (21.78). Gallant and Kelleher chipped in with the fifth (2:08.64) and eighth (2:09.30) best times in the 200-yard breaststroke. Martin was fifth in the women’s 50 free with a 24.81 and part of the fifth-place (7:53.37) 800-yard freestyle relay which included Reymann, freshman Cailin Gonyea (Southbridge, MA), and Day. 

A trio of relays took sixth. Patterson, senior Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT), freshman Carol Wang(Framingham, MA), Day and Martin needed just 1:50.14 in the 200-yard medley relay as Reymann, senior Tori Claverie (Derry, NH), Day and Martin registered a 3:38.51 in Sunday’s 400-yard freestyle relay. Kelleher, Freshman Markus Zimmermann (Sammamish, WA), Miralda and Burgwardt collaborated to post a 7:03.49 in  Friday night’s 800-yard freestyle relay. The 100-yard breaststroke also saw Kelleher claim sixth (58.12) and Chen two spots behind in eighth (58.27). Houghton handed in a 52.96 to take seventh in the 100-yard backstroke. Patterson, Grant, Wang and Martin secured seventh in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:04.34.

Zimmermann was ninth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:52.68) and 500-yard freestyle (4:51.79) as Wang clocked a 2:16.86 in the 200-yard IM. Tenth-place Engineers included Grant in the 100-yard IM (1:04.79) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.90), as well as Wang in the 100-yard butterfly (59.97).

Eggleston, Day and freshman Olivia Hanson (Anchorage, AK) each won a B final with times of 1:03.60 in the 100-yard IM, 5:09.92 in the 500-yard freestyle and 4:45.31 in the 400-yard IM. Perry tied for 11th in the 100-yard butterfly (52.31) as did Burgwardt in the 50-yard freestyle (21.89). Martin was the favorite to take the 100-yard freestyle second final but ended up 13th despite being .54 seconds quicker with a 54.27.

In a 100-yard breaststroke C final that featured five Engineers, Eggleston was the quickest with a 21st-place 1:09.99. She also won the 200-yard breaststroke C final in a time of 2:36.35. Patterson jumped up eight spots to claim the 100-yard butterfly third final with a 1:00.24. Also earning a victory in the initial heat of the night were Reymann in the 100-yard freestyle (54.58), junior Sam Carley (Trumbull, CT) in the 400-yard IM (4:31.39) and freshman Harry Saperstein (Simsbury, CT) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.50).

Childers added a 15th-place 1:59.38 in the 200-yard freestyle and Freshman Sydney Seo (North Andover, MA) was 18th in the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.05).

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's swimming and diving team wrapped up competition in the Gompei Invitational with more strong performances on Sunday in Worcester.

The Bulldogs finished the three-day meet with 3,969.5 points, good enough for fourth. WPI won the 13-team meet with a score of 5,136.5 points.

Ben Schulte (Tumon, Guam) and Colin Curtin (Wethersfield, Conn.) wrapped up strong weekends for the Bulldogs. Schulte finished 9th in the 200 breast (2:10.14) and 13th in the 100 back (54.53). Curtin picked up a fifth-place finish in the 100 back (52.50) and also swam the anchor leg of the 400 free relay that finished fourth.

Bryant's divers also wrapped up a strong weekend with two more outstanding performances. Kevin Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn.) and Zach Vogel (South Easton, Mass.) finished 3-4 in the 3-meter dive. Sullivan scored 435.95 points and Vogel posted 366.25 points.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's swimming and diving team took home first-place finishes in five different events on the final day of the Gompei Invitational hosted by WPI in Worcester.

The Bulldogs finished the three-day meet with a combined 3,969.5 points between the men and women, good enough for fourth. WPI won the 13-team meet with a score of 5,136.5 points. Bryant, however, did take home the women's team title.

On Sunday, the Black and Gold received first-place finishes from Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.), Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Britain), Samantha Torrez (Whittier, Calif.), Ann Burdick (Glenmont, N.Y.) and the 200 medley relay team.

Rice won the 100 free with a time of 51.74, Scifo won the 100 back with a time of 59.01, Torrez won the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.33, Burdick won the 1-meter dive with a score of 435.50 and the 200 medley relay of Lindsey Choate (Upper St. Clair, Pa.), Kayleigh Canavan (Cumberland, R.I.), Taylor Poliseno (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) and Rice took first with a time of 1:47.02.

Bryant also saw several other swimmers perform well on Sunday. Domenica Alcala (Cancun, Mexico) won the "B" final in the 100 free and also finished third in the 200 fly. Eliza Brant (Hauppauge, N.Y.) finished seventh in the 200 breast and Torrez won the "B" final. Bryant also excelled in the 200 free as Watson finished fourth and Rice finished sixth. Caitlin Dye (Natick, Mass.) and Nicole Salzano (Elmwood Park, N.J.) both swam in the "A" final of the 100 back, finishing fourth and eighth, respectively.

The Bulldogs dominated on the boards on Sunday led by Burdick's first-place finish. Stephanie Jennings (Elmont, N.Y.) finished second, Carissa Stemen (Naples, Fla.) was fourth and Ashley Lewis (Maple Valley, Wash.) was fifth. Bryant's divers contributed 284 points over the course of the weekend. In addition, Jennings posted a zone-qualifying performance, becoming the first diver in program history to achieve that feat. 

Assumption Press Release

The Assumption College women's swimming & diving team wrapped up the WPI Gompei Invitational today, finishing in second place, as only Division I Bryant University was able to top the Hounds.


HOW IT HAPPENED:

- The 200 medley relay kicked off day three of the Invitational, with freshman Kelsey Johnstone (Southwick, Mass. / Westfield), sophomore Morgan Nicholls (East London, South Africa / Clarendon), junior Courtney Barr (Waltham, Mass. / Matignon) and senior Allie Wuerfl (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) finishing seventh with a time of 1:50.84.

- In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Mikayla Campbell (Marshfield, Mass. / Marshfield) placed eighth (2:31.72), and Johnstone finished ninth (2:31.95), while Wuerfl raced her way to a ninth place finish in the 100 free with a time of 54.65 seconds.

- Assumption had a strong showing in the 200 fly, placing four swimmers in the top ten, led by senior Rachel Lanam (Sebastian, Fla. / Sebastian River) who completed the race in 2:09.48. Freshman Colleen Kurtz (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Preparatory) was barely out touched by Lanam, finishing fifth with a time of 2:09.78. Sophomore Ali Petrozza (North Andover, Mass. / Austin Preparatory School) and freshman Natalia Kaczor (Chicopee, Mass. / Chicopee) each registered a top ten finish with Petrozza finishing in sixth (2:09.97) and Kaczor placing ninth (2:13.78).

- Junior Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School) recorded a top three finish in the 400 IM, touching the wall in third place with a time of 4:38.28. Petrozza and Senior Tricia Lee (Norwood, Mass. / Norwood) finished back-to-back, with Petrozza placing seventh with a time of 4:43.67 and Lee finishing in eighth in 4:44.66. Sophomore Shannon Quirk (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) swam her way to a second place finish in the "B" final, clocking in at 4:46.51.

- In the 200 free, Quirk led a trio of Hounds that placed in the top ten with her fifth place finish in 1:57.81. Wuerfl came in seventh (1:58.34), while freshman Sydney LaQue (Burnt Hills, N.Y. / Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) won the "B" final with a time of 1:58.59.

- The 400 freestyle relay of Nicholls, Wuerfl, freshman Abbey Holmes (Laurel, MD / Archbishop Spalding) and Kurtz finished in 3:36.28, good for a third place finish.

WORCESTER, Mass.  – Fifth-place finishes by freshman Dan Sausto (Slingerlands, N.Y./The Doane Stuart School) and senior Greg Coleman (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North HS) were the top final-day performances for the Bentley University men’s swimming and diving team as the Gompei Invitational at WPI concluded on Sunday.

Sausto,  who broke the school record in both the 1650 and 1000 freestyle distances on Friday, took fifth in the 400 individual medley, finishing in 4:15.91. Coleman followed up on his fourth place finish in the one-meter diving by taking fifth from the three-meter board, posting a score of 342.10.

Freshman Jarod Yoshihara (Irvine, Calif./University HS) earned a pair of tenths on Sunday with times of 53.91 in the 100 back and 1:50.95 in the 200 free.

Bentley’s other individual top ten came from sophomore Frank Elenio (Ridgefield, N.J./ Bergen County Academies) with a ninth in the 200 butterfly (2:00.69).

The three-day meet concluded with Bentley finishing sixth in the 400 free relay in 3:11.55. That quartet included junior Aidan Karam (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) and seniors Matt Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J./Morristown HS)Colin McCarthy (Glastonbury, Conn./Northwest Catholic HS) and Davis Wilson (Ransom Canyon, Texas/Lubbock HS).

In the team standings, which combined both men’s and women’s results, Bentley finished fifth among 13 squads with 2,641.5 points. WPI swam past Stevens Tech for the team title, 5136.5-4225, and the top five also included Rowan and Bryant universities.

Bentley will wrap up its first semester schedule Saturday at Norwich University.

WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Emily Niemiec (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Mahoney HS) and sophomore Kate Kaduboski (Dedham/Dedham HS) were the top performers for the Bentley University women’s swimming and diving team during Sunday’s final day of competition in the Gompei Invitational at WPI.

Kaduboski had the Falcons’ highest final-day performance, swimming to fourth in the 400 yard individual medley in 4:38.80. She was also tenth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.32.

Niemiec recorded a pair of fifth-place finishes, with times of 2:28.67 in the 200 breaststroke and 4:39.69 in the 400 individual medley, where she trailed Kaduboski by 0.89 seconds.

Both were also part of the Falcons’ 400 free relay team that finished eighth in 3:38.77, along with sophomore Brooke Jameson (Bedford/Bedford HS) and senior Kaitlin McGahie (Boylston/ Tahanto Reg. HS).

McGahie had a pair of top ten finishes on the day, taking seventh in the 100 freestyle (54.46) and tenth in the 200 free (1:59.28). In the latter event, Jameson’s time of 1:58.53 was good for eighth place.

Freshman Caroline Logozzo (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield HS) was seventh in the one-meter diving (352.20) and sophomore Melissa Viator (Lubbock, Texas/Lubbock HS) achieved a ninth in the 100 backstroke (1:00.51).
