WPI Completes Day 2 of Gompei Invitational Out Front

WPI is out front at its own WPI Gompei Invitational after two days.

WORCESTER, Mass. --  Junior Jonny Boains (Unionville, Conn./Farmington HS) had the highest day two finish for the Bentley University men’s swimming and diving team during the Gompei Invitational at WPI Saturday night. He took third place in the 100 yard individual medley with a time of 54.55.

Freshman Jarod Yoshihara (Irvine, Calif./University HS) had a pair of top ten finishes as he was fourth in the 200 backstroke (1:54.89) and tenth in the 500 freestyle (4:50.48).

In the one-meter diving, senior Greg Coleman (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North HS) was fourth (402.70) and classmate Nick Cilia (Brentwood, N.H./Exeter HS) finished eighth (332.25).

Bentley’s other top ten finish on Saturday came in the 200 free relay with the Falcons tenth in 1:27.54. That quartet consisted of freshman Alper Alkaya (Milan, Italy) and seniors Liam Bartlett (Syracuse, N.Y./William Nottingham HS)Colin McCarthy (Glastonbury, Conn./Northwest Catholic HS) and Davis Wilson (Ransom Canyon, Texas/Lubbock HS).

In the combined team scores, which includes both men’s and women’s results, Bentley is fifth among 13 teams with 1,600.5 points. WPI has a commanding lead with 3,040, nearly 600 more than second-place Rowan University.

The three-day meet will conclude Sunday with prelims at 8:30 and finals at 4:30 pm.

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Kaitlin McGahie (Boylston/Tahanto Reg. HS) and junior Emily Niemiec (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Mahoney HS) posted wins for the Bentley University women’s swimming and diving team Saturday night during the second day of the Gompei Invitational at WPI.

McGahie broke her own school record while winning the 100 yard individual medley in 1:00.33, an improvement of 0.37 seconds over the mark she set at the same meet a year ago. It was a nail-biter as she just edged Assumption’s Morgan Nicholls by two-hundredths of a second.

Niemiec shared first place in the 200 IM with Assumption’s Niamh Morgan with both touching in 2:10.02.

Each also finished high in another event while also swimming two relays. McGahie was fourth in the 50 freestyle (24.76) and Niemiec took sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.07).

In the 400 medley relay, Bentley finished fourth in 4:01.26 with McGahie and Niemiec joined by sophomores Kate Kaduboski (Dedham/Dedham HS) and Melissa Viator (Lubbock, Texas/Lubbock HS).  McGahie, Niemiec and Kaduboski also teamed with senior Nicole Hellstern (Southbury, Conn./ Pomperaug HS) to place eighth in the 200 free relay (1:40.03).

Kaduboski and Viator both turned in top five performances in the 200 backstroke, finishing third and fifth, respectively. Kaduboski finished in 2:07.48 and Viator turned in a 2:08.38.

Assumption Press Release

 The Assumption College women's swimming & diving team completed day two of the WPI Gompei Invitational today and were anchored by a number of strong swims.


HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Junior Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School) got the meet started with a first place finish in the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:10.02. In the "B" final, freshman Kelsey Johnstone (Southwick, Mass. / Westfield) placed first with a time of 2:12.13, which was the fourth fastest time overall, and would have put her fourth in the "A" final.

- Sophomore Shannon Quirk (Wakefield, Mass. / Wakefield Memorial) led a quartet of Hounds that finished in the top five of the 1650 freestyle. Quirk won the race with the 16th fastest time in the nation thus far, clocking in at 17:20.50 and qualifying her for the NCAA "B" cut. Freshman Sydney LaQue (Burnt Hills, N.Y. / Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) swam her way to a third place finish with a time of 17:47.86, while senior Rachel Lanam (Sebastian, Fla. / Sebastian River) placed fourth in 17:54.59. Freshman Colleen Kurtz (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Preparatory) rounded out the top five, finishing fifth with a time of 17:55.81.

- In the 500 freestyle, Quirk once again paced the Hounds with a second place finish, swimming to a time of 5:07.29. Kurtz and Lanam each recorded a top ten finish, as Kurtz placed fourth (5:10.86) and Lanam came in eighth (5:18.18).

- Sophomore Morgan Nicholls (East London, South Africa / Clarendon) had a strong showing for the Hounds on the day, as she raced her way to a second place finish in the 100 IM with a time of 1:00.35. Nicholls also completed the 50 freestyle in seventh place with a time of 25.14 seconds. Junior Bry Veroneau (Belchertown, Mass. / Belchertown) placed tenth in the 50 free, clocking in at 25.46 seconds, while classmate Courtney Barr (Waltham, Mass. / Matignon) came in third place in the "B" final with a time of 25.33 seconds.

- In the 100 breaststroke, Johnstone swam her way to a time of 1:08.84, good for a fourth place finish. Sophomore Mikayla Campbell (Marshfield, Mass. / Marshfield) earned a second place finish in the "B" final of the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.67.

- Morgan and Barr were separated by just .13 seconds in the 200 backstroke, as Morgan placed eighth in 2:10.00, while Barr finished in second place in the "B" final with a time of 2:10.13 which would have placed her ninth in the "A" final.

- Sophomore Ali Petrozza (North Andover, Mass. / Austin Preparatory School) finished fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.44 seconds, while freshman Natalia Kaczor (Chicopee, Mass. / Chicopee) placed seventh in 59.56 seconds.


- The Hounds relays have performed well through day two of the WPI Gompei Invitational, with the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay each finishing in fifth place. Morgan, freshman Abbey Holmes (Laurel, MD / Archbishop Spalding), classmate Emma Magna (Niantic, Conn. / East Lyme) and senior Allie Wuerfl (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) clocked in at 1:39.66 in the 200 free relay, while Johnstone, Nicholls, Petrozza and Wuerfl finished with a time of 4:03.44 in the 400 medley relay. The quartet of senior Tricia Lee (Norwood, Mass. / Norwood), Kurtz, Veroneau and Wuerfl placed sixth in the 800 yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:53.78.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant University women's swimming and diving  sophomore Ann Burdick (Glenmont, N.Y.) won the 3-meter dive and classmate Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) posted a victory in the 50 free to highlight day two of the WPI Gompei Invitational.

The Bulldogs are currently in fourth place with 2,297.5 points. WPI leads the 13-team field with 3,040 points.

Burdick, along with Stephanie Jennings (Elmont, N.Y.), went 1-2 in the 3-meter dive. Burdick set a new personal best in the finals with a score of 430.65. Jennings finished second with a score of 391.25.

Rice paced the Bulldogs in the pool by winning the 50 free. She posted a time of 24.35. Freshman Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Britain) tied for first place in the 200 back, posting a time of 2:06.85. Scifo also finished 10th in the 200 IM.

Other top performers for the Bulldogs included Nicole Salzano (Elmwood Park, N.J.), Erin Daly (Reading, Mass.), Mackenzie Kirk (San Jose, Calif.), Lindsey Choate (Upper St. Clair, Pa.), Eliza Brant (Hauppauge, N.Y.), Samantha Torrez (Whittier, Calif.), Domenica Alcala (Cancun, Mexico) and Taylor Poliseno (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.).

Salzano finished seventh in the 200 back and 6th in the 500 free, Daly finished seventh in the 500 free, Kirk finished 10th in the 500 free, Choate won the "B" final of the 50 free, Brant finished fifth in the 100 breast, while Torrez, Alcala and Poliseno finished 2,4,8 in the 100 fly.

Bryant also won the 200 free relay and finished second in the 400 medley relay. Kayleigh Canavan (Cumberland, R.I.), Salzano, Poliseno and Rice combined to post a winning time of 1:37.54 in the 200 free relay. Salzano, Brant, Torrez and Rice teamed up to finish second in the 400 medley relay. 

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Strong performances from Ben Schulte (Tumon, Guam) and Kevin Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn.) highlighted the second day of competition at the WPI Gompei Invitational for the Bryant University men's swimming and diving team.

The Bulldogs are currently in fourth place with 2,297.5 points. WPI leads the 13-team field with 3,040 points.

Schulte was Bryant's top swimmer on Saturday, posting seventh-place finishes in the 200 IM and the 100 breast. He posted a time of 1:56.90 in the 200 IM and 58.19 in the 100 breast. Schulte also helped the 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay teams to fourth-place finishes.

Sullivan had a strong day on the boards, finishing third in the 1-meter dive. He posted a new personal record score of 404.25. Zach Vogel (South Easton, Mass.) finished sixth in the event with a personal-best score of 385.30.
