Jean Freeman Invitational Comes to Close

The Jean Freeman Invitational came to a close after a two-day battle amongst the assembled squads.

MINNEAPOLIS — South Dakota sophomore Theresa Godlewski lowered her school record in the 100-yard backstroke, freshman Isaac Morris broke his school record on the one-meter dive and senior Sam Schutt won the 500-yard free as the Coyotes competed at the Jean K. Freeman Invitational held Friday and Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Altogether, the Coyotes placed in the top-3 of 15 events.
 
Godlewski swam to a school record 56.87 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke, which broke her own record from last year that stood at 57.39.  
 
Morris placed fourth on both the one- and three-meter dives. He set a new school record on the one-meter with a score 305.10. He scored 302.80 on the three-meter dive.  
 
Schutt tallied the Coyotes’ lone win at the invite as she cruised to a 4:53.00 finish in the 500-yard free. She finished two seconds faster than any other swimmer. She also placed third in the 200-yard backstroke and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 1:51.25 and 51.93, respectively. She teamed up with freshman Sabrina Sabadeanu, junior Kassidie Cornell and sophomore Hannah Gupton in the 400-yard medley relay. Schutt swam the final leg as the Coyotes grabbed third place with a time of 3:55.06.
 
Sabadeanu swam to a third-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.68. Her time is second-best on the Coyote Top 10 list.
 
On the men’s side, senior Jacob Knowles tallied two top-3 individual finishes and was part of three relay teams that also placed in the top-3. Individually, Knowles finished third in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 56.24 and 2:02.82, respectively. 
 
As a member of the 200-yard medley relay with freshman Evan Marsh, sophomore Jared Thorson and senior Eric Erlenmeyer, the team was the runner-up with 1:32.64. The same team placed third in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:25.06. Knowles, Thorson, Erlenmeyer and freshman James Ryan placed third in the 200-yard free with 1:25.05.
 
Sophomore Hunter Padgett finished with two individual top-3 finishes and was part of the 400-yard freestyle relay that was the runner-up. Padgett finished third, but with the second fastest time in school history as he clocked in with 16:04.73 in the 1,650 freestyle. He also placed third in the 50-yard free with a time of 4:35.09. Padgett teamed up with junior Steve Wascom, freshman Josh Sorbe and freshman Nathan Spencer for the second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle with 3:08.58.
 
Erlenmeyer and Thorson both recorded top-3 finishes for the Coyotes. Erlenmeyer was the runner-up in the 50-yard free with a time of 20.88 and Thorson was third in the 200-yard individual medley with 1:56.34.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Carleton College swimming and diving teams took part in the two-day competition at the Jean Freeman Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota. The 17-team field included a trio of NCAA Division I programs: Minnesota, South Dakota State, and University of South Dakota.
 
A total of 14 Division III teams participated, including nearly all of the MIAC squads as well as Augustana (Ill.), Luther, and Minnesota-Morris. The women’s diving portion of the weekend also includes representation from four additional D-I programs: Iowa State, Kansas, Nebraska, and University of Denver.
 
Each day began with morning prelims in each event. The evening finals were broken up into two parts. The top eight qualifiers from the preliminary round raced in the “A” final, while the ninth through 16th qualifiers competed in the “B” final. The Knights had a total of 18 swimmers participate in the finals.
 
The biggest highlights of the weekend came on Friday as both Caroline Mather (So./Highlands Ranch, Colo./Mountain Vista) and Maria Wetzel (Sr./Salem, Ore./West Salem) posted NCAA ‘B’ cut times.
 
Mather touched the wall in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.78, good for a third-place finish overall. She finished with a time better than nine D-I racers that competed on Friday night. Mather also took eighth place in the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday.
 
Maria Wetzel clocked a career-best time of 2:02.33 during the prelims of the 200-yard backstroke on Friday, that was more than two seconds better than the NCAA ‘B’ cut time. She placed fifth during the event finals, reaching the wall faster than seven D-I swimmers during the evening session. On Saturday, she placed 16th in the 100-yard butterfly after setting a personal-best with a time of 59.85 during the prelims. Maria Wetzel also posted the seventh-fastest time in the 400 IM prelims (4:37.42) but did not return to race in the finals.
 
Ada Meyer (Fy./Seattle, Wash./Ingraham) advanced to the “A” final in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing eighth (1:08.55) the first day. On Saturday evening, she finished 11th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.48), while Morgan Mayer (Fy./Garret Park, Md./Georgetown Day) placed right behind her in that event at 2:27.62.
 
Anna Gergely (So./Denver, Colo./Jewish Day School) and Alex Braiedy (Sr./Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) both swam the “B” final of the 200-yard butterfly, finishing 13th at 2:17.43 and 14th at 2:20.37, respectively.
 
Braiedy, Mather, and Maria Wetzel swam on all four of Carleton women’s relays, with each ranking second among D-III entries and placing among the meet’s top seven finishers overall.
 
On the men’s side, Alex Mathson (Sr./Verona, Wis./Verona) posted top-16 results in three events: the 500-yard freestyle (4:58.00), the 400 IM (4:22.67), and the 1650 freestyle (17:07.17). Jack Dalluge (Fy./Waverly, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) turned in top-16 finishes in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.90) and 1650-yard freestyle (17:06.57).
 
Sam Darwish (Fy./Akron, Ohio./University School) added a ninth-place result in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.46) with Eric Meyer (Fy./Potomac, Md./Wootton) taking 16th in the same event (2:05.99).
 
Colin Lau (Jr./Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) finished 11th in the 200 IM at 2:03.02, while Ari Conati (Fy./Minneapolis, Minn./Minnetonka) took 16th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.30).
