Yellow Jacket Invitational Continues in Virginia

The Yellow Jacket Invitational, hosted by Randolph-Macon, continued today in Richmond, Va.

RICHMOND, Va. — Senior Pat Elliott (Media, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]) won two individual events and led off a winning relay as the Washington College men's swim team finished second of 11 teams at Randolph-Macon's Yellow Jacket Invitational, held yesterday and today at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Richmond, Va. The Shoremen had a total of eight top three finishes during the meet.

Shoremen Highlights
- Elliott won the 500 freestyle in 4:47.46 and the 1650 freestyle in 16:38.27. He led off the winning 200 medley relay, which finished in 1:35.80. He was joined on that relay team by Kevin Mackenzie, Aidan Sullivan, and Cody Weiler. Elliott was also seventh in the 200 freestyle in 1:47.12
- Brendan Jones had an impressive meet for the Shoremen. He was second to Elliott in the 1650 freestyle in 16:48.14, becoming the Shoremen's third-fastest swimmer ever in that event and their fourth-fastest swimmer ever in the 1000 freestyle with his split time of 10:12.80. He was also third in the 500 freestyle in 4:49.10 to become the Shoremen's third-fastest swimmer ever in that event and fourth in the 400 individual medley in 4:16.43 to become their sixth-fastest ever in that event. He also swam an exhibition time of 2:01.89 in the 200 butterfly to become the Shoremen's 10th-fastest swimmer ever in that event.
- Mackenzie, Elliott, Dave Rovansek, and Sullivan placed second in the 800 freestyle relay in 7:09.50. Mackenzie was third in the 100 freestyle in 47.35 and fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 58.96. Weiler tied for third in the 50 freestyle in 21.63, was fourth in the 100 backstroke in 54.91, and was sixth in the 100 freestyle in 47.96.
- The Shoremen placed fourth in three relay events. Finny Dorsch, Weiler, Sullivan, and Mackenzie were fourth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:28.08; Elliott, Teague Sauter, Sullivan, and Karl Melchior were fourth in the 400 medley relay in 3:36.23; and Weiler, Dorsch, Melchior, and Mackenzie placed fourth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:12.87.
- Sullivan placed fifth in the 100 freestyle in 47.39 to become the Shoremen's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He was seventh in the 100 butterfly in 52.89 to become their ninth-fastest ever in that event and added a 12th-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 22.22. Sauter's fifth-place time of 2:12.31 in the 200 breaststroke made him Washington's fourth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. He bettered his own standing as their ninth-fastest swimmer ever in the 100 breatstroke with his eighth-place time of 1:00.43.
- Ty Cummings placed sixth in the 200 butterfly (1:59.61) and 13th in the 100 butterfly (53.80). Rovansek tied for ninth in the 200 freestyle (1:47.89), was 10th in the 1650 freestyle (17:35.47), and placed 14th in the 500 freestyle (4:56.38). Brent Hochstein was 10th in the 400 individual medley (4:26.15), Dorsch placed 13th in the 100 freestyle (49.10), Melchior placed 15th in thr 200 breaststroke (2:18.21), and Jason Mercando finished 16th in the 200 freestyle (1:49.73).

RICHMOND, Va. — Junior Jenni Clune (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) won the 100 breaststroke with a school-record time as the Washington College women's swim team finished second of 14 teams at Randolph-Macon's Yellow Jacket Invitational, held yesterday and today at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Richmond, Va. The Shorewomen had a total of seven top-three finishes during the meet.

Shorewomen Highlights
- Clune's winning time of 1:05.33 in the 100 breaststroke broke the school record of 1:05.82 set by Margaret Klag in 2004. She was also third in the 100 freestyle in 53.03 to become the Shorewomen's third fastest swimmer ever in that event, and fourth in the 200 individual medley in 2:12.40. She led off the 200 freestyle relay with a 25.11 leg to tie for the Shorewomen's seventh spot on their all-time fastest list for the 50 freestyle.
- The Shorewomen were second in both the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Ellen Maxwell, Clune, Lindsay Wiecki, and Katie Gorman were second in the 200 medley relay in 1:50.88, while Anna Schmittle, Gorman, Mackenzie Gaze, and Clune were second in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:35.12.
- The Shorewomen placed third in the 200 freestyle relay as Clune, Gaze, Schmittle, and Gorman finished in 1:39.74.
- Julia Portmann was third in both the 200 freestyle (1:56.87) and 1650 freestyle (17:49.49) and was fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:12.32). Gorman was fourth in the 100 freestyle in 53.74 to become the Shorewomen's fifth-fastest swimmer ever in that event. She was also eighth in both the 200 freestyle (1:59.86) and 50 freestyle (25.10).
- The Shorewomen were fourth in the 800 freestyle relay as Schmittle, Portmann, Gaze, and Gorman finished in  in 7:59.34. They were fifth in the 400 medley relay as Maxwell, Clune, Wiecki, and Portmann finished in 4:04.35.
- Maxwell turned in a fifth-place finish in the 400 individual medley (4:51.17), a sixth-place time in the 200 backstroke (2:15.04), and a 10th-place showing in the 200 individual medley (2:16.08). Bailey Reigel placed fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:14.99) and 16th in the 100 backstroke (1:04.19).
- Wiecki took ninth in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.51 to become Washington's sixth-fastest swimmer ever in that event, ninth in the 200 butterfly (2:16.99), and 12th in the 500 freestyle (5:20.52). Schmittle was ninth in the 100 freestyle (55.03), 13th in the 50 freestyle (25.49), and 13th in the 200 freestyle (2:00.86). Alex Searles placed ninth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:33.21 to become the Shorewomen's 10th-fastest swimmer ever in that event. Gaze tied for 11th in the 50 freestyle (25.47), placed 12th in the 200 freestyle (2:00.44), and finished 13th in the 100 freestyle (55.61).

Franklin & Marshall Press Release

CHESTERFIELD, Va. – A series of solid individual performances powered Franklin and Marshall women's swimming to a third-place finish at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday night, hosted by Randolph-Macon. The Diplomats finished the weekend with 461 points, while Washington & Lee earned 939.5 to take the team title.

Anna Hess put together a pair of high finishes in the backstroke events, headlined by a victory in the 200-yard edition, where her time of 2:07.00 was the fastest of the day by more than 2.5 seconds. She was followed by Samantha Hershey, who took seventh in 2:16.00.

Hess also reached the podium in the 100, finishing second in 58.73 after Washington & Lee's Emily Rollo broke the meet record by more than a second to win in 57.17. Hess was backed up by Erin Fago (8th, 1:02.58) and Hershey (11th, 1:03.18) as F&M turned in a deep team performance.

Melissa Mullin added two strong individual performances as well, beginning in the 400-yard IM, where she took second with a mark of 4:40.35. She trailed only KaSandra Kaplan of Howard, who like Rollo of W&L, needed to break the meet record to deny F&M the victory.

Mullin rounded out her meet in style, earning bronze in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:26.72. Michelle Wall finished the race in 2:32.32 to earn seventh, while Jane Posner came in 13th. Wall also notched a top-three finish of her own the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:09.15 to take third.

Grace Pereles got in on the action in the 1650-yard freestyle, finishing in second with a time of 17:45.02. Randolph-Macon's Kata Kylliainen broke the meet record to win in 17:37.79, but high finishes from Caroline Fry (fourth, 18:03.92) and Rebecca McCain (18:38.88) placed three Diplomats in the top 10.

F&M will not compete again until the new year, next hosting Susquehanna on Sunday, Jan. 15.

CHESTERFIELD, Va. – An illness-ridden Franklin & Marshall men's swimming team battled its way to a third-place finish at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday, hosted by Randolph-Macon. The Diplomat totaled 373.5 points over the two days, while Washington & Lee took the team title with 766.

Timothy Gould continued his fast start to the season, reaching the podium twice on Saturday. In the 200-yard backstroke, Gould took the individual victory after his time of 1:56.56 was the fastest by more than a second. He was backed up by Maxwell Lyons, who touched the wall in 2:01.14 to earn seventh place and cap a strong F&M performance in the event.

Gould also asserted himself in the 100-yard backstroke, earning a tie for second place. The sophomore stormed back from a slight deficit at the turn to take silver in 53.91.

Jonathon Sinton put together a strong day of his own, beginning with a third-place finish in the 400-yard IM after clocking a time of 4:15.74. He was followed by Eric Lang, who took seventh at 4:20.71. Sinton then added a fifth-place finish in the last individual event of the night, the 200-yard butterfly, by finishing in 1:58.29. Cody Kalinowski (9th, 2:00.15) and Richard Perry (10th, 2:00.21) were close behind in a deep Diplomat effort.

Perry tallied a top-five finish of his own, finishing the 100-yard butterfly in 52.73 to take fifth place. Kalinowski earned 16th in the event with a mark of 54.36.

Matthew Pozmanter took seventh place in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:24.84, and Daniel Sanders took ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.01) to round out F&M's top-10 finishes.

The Yellow Jacket Invitational is the only competition of the month for the Diplomats, who will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 15 by hosting Susquehanna.

ASHLAND, VA. – The Barton College women’s swimming team concluded the 2016 portion of its inaugural season by competing against 10 other programs in the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolph-Macon College.

Washington & Lee University took home the team title with a total score of 939.50, defeating second place Washington College by more than 460 points.

Individually, Annika Jasek-Rysdahl finished in the top half of the field in 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:32.88 to set a new personal record, while also finishing 12th in a field of 31 swimmers in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 19:11.11 to set another personal best.

Senior Tia Broady set personal records in two separate races, finishing the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 1:51.73 and completing the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.15.

Three other swimmers had personal best times in the 100-yard freestyle as Sydney Turner finished with a time of 1:12.31 and Shelby Cash turned in a time of 1:13.62. Senior Tanya Garcia also had a personal record, finishing the race in 1:24.11.

In the relays, the team of Jasek-Rysdahl, Turner, Cash and Garcia competed in the 400-yard medley relay for the first time in program history, completing the race 5:26.41. The Lady Bulldogs also swam the 400-yard freestyle relay for the first time as Jasek-Rysdahl, Turner, Cash and Broady finished in 5:19.87.

The team returns to action on Jan. 13 when the Lady Bulldogs travel to Murfreesboro, N.C. to compete against Chowan University and St. Andrews University.

ASHLAND, VA. – The Barton College men’s swimming team concluded the 2016 portion of its inaugural season by competing against nine other programs in the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Randolph-Macon College.

Washington & Lee University took home the team title with a total score of 766, defeating second place Washington College by more than 260 points.

Individually, Luis Reyes shaved almost three seconds off of his previous top time in the 100-yard butterfly, completing the race in 52.84 to finish sixth overall. James Day also claimed a sixth place finish of his own, turning in a personal best time of 1:47.03 in the 200-yard freestyle, while also finishing inside the Top-10 in the 100-yard freestyle race with a time of 48.38.

Robert Zamorano missed a Top-10 finish by less than a second, finishing the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.53 for an 11th place finish. Zamorano finished 9th in the 500-yard freestyle race with a personal best time of 4:52.94, while Day also set a personal record with a time of 4:54.31 to finish 12th in the 40-member field of swimmers.

Alex Krasutsky turned in the program’s best 200-yard individual medley time, finishing the race in 2:03.87. Colin Strickland tied for 30th among 57 participants in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.95, while fellow Bulldog Gabe Dulin set a personal record of 28.42 in the race. Strickland earned a Top-15 finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a program-best time of 57.97

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Krasutsky, Strickland, Reyes and Andre Richardson finished 13th with a program best time of 1:30.74. The 400-yard medley relay team of Strickland, Krasutsky, Reyes and Day finished ninth overall in an 18-team field with a time of 3:42.07, while Reyes, Richardson, Day and Zamorano claimed the Bulldogs’ second ninth place finish with a time of 7:19.57 in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

The team returns to action on Jan. 13 when the Bulldogs travel to Murfreesboro, N.C. to compete against St. Andrews University.
