Marist, Loyola Win H2Ounds Invitational Titles

Marist and Loyola captured the H2Ounds Invitational titles on Saturday afternoon.

BALTIMORE - The Marist men’s swimming and diving team finished atop the four-team field at the 2016 H2ounds Invitational with 1,054 points, coming in ahead of host Loyola (984.5 points) and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponents Iona (840.5 points) and Saint Peter’s (279 points). The two conference victories gave the Red Foxes 100 all-time in program history since they joined the MAAC prior to the 1996-97 season. 

A strong freestyle core kept the Red Foxes ahead during all three sessions, as sophomores Daniel Knoll (45.50 seconds), Miguel Madeira (46.61 seconds) and Greg Violette (46.87 seconds) went 1-2-3 in the 100-yard event in the afternoon. The three had joined forces with sophomore Michael Valceanu to clock in at the fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:25.01) at the start of the second day of competition. Madeira was also the winner of the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.40).

Marist picked up more points in the butterfly when senior Manuel Garcia led a 1-2 Marist finish in the 200-yard event. .08 seconds separated Garcia (1:52.87) from Valceanu (1:52.95). At 100 yards, Garcia finished with the top time of 50.36 seconds.

Freshman Michael O’Donovan followed up on a solid first day of competition with a second place time of 16:04.46 in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Junior captain Robert McDowell registered a trio of third-place finishes after racing in the 100-yard butterfly (51.25 seconds) and 100- (51.88 seconds) and 200-yard backstroke (1:52.94).

In the diving event freshman Raislan Aiken nabbed first place on the 1-meter board with 271.72 points, a score more than 50 points ahead of the rest of the pack.

Marist will go on its winter training trip from Dec. 28-Jan. 3 in Orlando. The Red Foxes will return to McCann Natatorium on Jan. 10 to host Southern Connecticut State at 6 p.m.

BALTIMORE - With the second most points at the 2016 H2ounds Invitational on Dec. 3, the Marist women’s swimming and diving team extended their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season winning streak to 40 dating back to 2009. The winning streak is the longest at Marist since the men’s program won 60 straight conference meets when it first joined the MAAC in 1996 and did not lose a regular season conference competition until 2006. 

The Red Foxes racked up 917.5 points, which was second to the host Greyhounds’ mark of 1,243 points. Iona (771.5 points) and Saint Peter’s (159 points) finished behind the Red Foxes.

Marist’s relay teams highlighted the second day of competition, as the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay squads began and ended Saturday with first place times. Juniors Georgia Goldman, Sara Nestrowitz, and Deirdre Connor, and senior Meredith Wurtz clocked in at 1:37.08 at 200 yards. Nestrowitz and Connor flipped in the order of the 400-yard event and helped the Red Foxes register a time of 3:32.86.

Three out of the four relay members also had individual wins, beginning with Nestrowitz in the morning session, who raced to 1:54.54 to take the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle. She also finished second at 1,650 yards (17:33.14) behind classmate Shannon Gordon (17:19.37). Goldman’s time of 58.40 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke gave her first place in the event and Wurtz was victorious in the 100-yard freestyle (51.89 seconds) in the afternoon session.

Junior Melanie Newton posted third place finishes in the 200- (1:56.08) and 1,650-yard freestyle (17:40.51).

On the diving board, junior Megan Berardelli had her second victory in as many days when she scored 256.13 points at three meters. Sophomore Lauren Katz ended up in third place with a final score of 213.52 points.

BALTIMORE, Md. - Freshman Annie Hayburn set a school record in the 100-butterfly with a time of 56.27 seconds as she led the Loyola University Maryland women's swimming and diving team to a first place finish at the H2Ounds Invitational Meet at the Mangione Pool on Saturday

Hayburn, who was also part of the first place 200-free relay team, led the Greyhounds to 1,243 points as they edged Marist (917.5) for the title. Iona (771.5) finished third while Saint Peter's (159) was fourth in the two-day event.

Despite a record performance from junior Ben Cono, the Loyola men's swimming and diving team finished second with 984.5 points, trailing champion Marist by 70 points. Marist won the title with 1,054 points. Iona (840.5) finished third while Saint Peter's took fourth place (279).

When competition resumed on Saturday morning, Hayburn joined Gabrielle Clarkson, Alden Coyne and Tara Mulligan to win the 200-free relay with a time of 1:36.81.

Freshman Megan Adlem, who won the 500-free on Friday, won her second individual title of the meet when she finished first in the 400 I.M. with a time of 4:29.53. Junior Maddie Myers was second (4:29.91) while senior Theresa McKallen was third (4:35.04) as the Greyhounds swept the top three spots.

In the 100-butterfly, Hayburn led another Loyola sweep. She finished first with her school record time of 56.27 seconds. Junior Courtney Martin was second (57.20), just ahead of Grace Huckenpoehler (57.70).

Mulligan led a Loyola sweep of the top four spots in the 100-breaststroke, winning the event in 1:05.35. Courtney Kenyon was second (1:05.64) while Devin Cronin (1:06.72) and Emily Koegl (1:08.51) placed third and fourth.

Hayburn contributed to the Loyola success in the 100-backstroke as she finished second (58.42), just ahead of Marie Clarkson (59.36).

Adlem earned another first place finish as she teamed up with Mulligan, Martin and Alden Coyne to win the 200-medley relay (1:47.09).

McKallen turned in a record-setting performance in the 200-breaststroke as won the title in a time of 2:20.95, a school record. Cronin finished second (2:24.53) and Kenyon (2:27.54) was third.

Martin, who was runner-up in the 100-fly, took first place in the 200-fly with a time of 2:05.80. She was followed by Huckenpoehler (2:06.79) and Myers (2:06.85).

In the 200-free, Aly Pacitti took second place (1:55.28) while Brooke Sharkey was second in the 100-free (53.43).

Sophomore Lindsey Staszewski was second in the three-meter diving with 271.72 points.

Adlem, who won three individual titles in the two-day event, was named as the Swimmer of the Meet.

On the men's side, Cono led the Greyhounds by winning the 100-breaststroke and 200-breaststroke in addition to the 200 I.M. title he earned on Friday. He was the Swimmer of the Meet on the men's side.

Cono, who helped the Greyhounds win the 200-medley relay, finished first in the 100-breaststroke with a time of 0:53.39. He led a Loyola sweep of the top three spots as John Callaghan (0:57.38) and Jay Venit (0:58.29) were second and third.

In the 200-breaststroke, Cono win the competition in a time of 1:57.28 as he broke the pool record of 1:57.66 set by Olympic hero Michael Phelps in 2002. Callaghan was also second in the 200-breaststroke (2:06.73).

Senior Zeke Wolfgang contributed to the Loyola effort as he took first place in the 100-backstroke (50.29) and finished second in the 100-fly (50.62). Freshman Alex Munson was runner-up in the 100-backstroke (50.39).

Munson earned a first place finish in the 200-backstroke (1:48.60) while Wolfgang was second (1:50.51).

In 200-medley relay, the Greyhounds finished first with a time of 1:30.05. Cono joined Munson, Wolfgang and Alec Sperandino to win the relay.

The Greyhounds' 400-free relay team, which featured Wolfgang, Munson, Sperandino and Cono finished second with a time of 3:05.77.

Sperandino was also Loyola's top finisher in the 100-free as he took fourth place (47.21). In the 400 I.M., Luca DiCapua placed third (4:13.51).

Junior Sam Baluzy was the runner-up in the one-meter diving with 220.87 points.

The Loyola men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be idle until Friday, January 13 when they resume their season by hosting Patriot League rival Bucknell at 4:00 p.m. At the Mangione Pool.
