Eastern Illinois, Saint Louis, Maryville, Wabash Tangle in Charleston

Eastern Illinois hosted Saint Louis, Maryville and Wabash in a battle at the Padovan Pool on Saturday.

CHARLESTON, Ill. --  The Eastern Illinois men’s and women’s team swam in their final home meet of the season as the Panthers welcomed Saint Louis, Maryville, and Wabash College to Padovan Pool on Saturday afternoon. The EIU women finished the meet second overall, while the men placed third. The Panthers recorded a combined nine second place finishes in the quadrangular meet.

Before the meet, the Panthers honored Carolyn Belford, Paige Eavenson, Jessie Freudenthaler, Sydney Jarrard, Brogan O'Doherty, Austin Parrish, and Fallyn Schwake as part of the “Senior Day” celebration for the EIU swimming program.

The Panthers started the meet off strong as both the men’s and women’s teams finished second in the 400-Medley Relay. Nick Harkins, Matt Jacobs, Alex Laleian, and Brandon Robbins swam the event with a time of 3:39.15. For the women, Lauren Oostman, Rachel Manderscheid, Danielle DiMatteo, and Martee Grainger posted a time of 3:39.66.

Karleen Gernady and Schwake posted the second best time in the women’s 1000-Free Relay as the pair posted a time of 10:55.22.

Niki Beringer, Gloria Gonzales, and Oostman teamed up in the women’s 300-Back Relay and took home second place honors with their time of 3:05.22.

Julia Martin joined forces with DiMatteo, Gonzales, and Grainger in the women’s 500-Free Relay as the quartet touched the wall in second at 4:56.11.

The EIU women earned their final second place finish in the 300-Fly Relay as DiMatteo, Belford, and Gernady finished the event with a time of 3:07.07.

For the EIU men, Colin Frazee teamed up with Robbins and Jacobs in the 300-Breast Relay as the trio placed second in the event with a time of 3:01.37.

In the men’s 500-Free Relay, Shamus Shields, Bryan McPherson, Jennings Soccorso-McCoy, and Parrish placed second at 4:14.58.

The EIU men earned their final second place finish in the 400-Free Relay as Jason Manning, Soccorso-McCoy, Robbins, and McPherson finished the event at 3:16.16.

The EIU men’s and women’s swimming teams will return to action after the new year with a dual meet on the road at Saint Louis on Jan. 13.
