Texas Gets After It at Texas Invite

Texas kept on turning up the heat at its own Texas Invitational.

AUSTIN, Texas – Individual victories from All-American Jonathan Roberts and Olympians Jack Conger and Townley Haas highlighted night three for the Longhorns Friday at the Texas Invitational.  
 
Conger clocked the nation’s third-fastest time this season in the 100-yard butterfly and took the win at 44.94.  All-America senior Will Glass placed seventh at 46.71 while All-America junior Brett Ringgold took eighth at 46.82.  
 
Roberts stood fourth after 300 yards in the 400 IM “A” final before running down Stanford’s Curtis Ogren on his way to victory. Roberts, an All-American in the event last season, out-split Ogren by well over a second in the final 50 yards to take the win in 3:41.65.  
 
As is custom at the Invite, the 200 freestyle final proved to be a tight race chocked full of superstars. Haas, the defending NCAA champion and the American record holder in the event, took the win from lane one at 1:33.72 while his Olympics teammate, UT senior Clark Smith, placed fifth at 1:34.51. 
 
Sophomore John Shebat posted a 46.26 for second place in the 100 backstroke, and junior Austin Temple added a sixth-place mark of 53.57 in the 100 breaststroke “A” final. 
 
Texas capped the evening with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay, where Shebat, Temple, Conger and Ringgold finished in 1:25.81. 

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas senior Tasija Karosas lowered her school mark in the 100-yard backstroke for a second straight night, and the Longhorns went on to post two wins on the evening Friday at the Texas Invitational.   
 
Karosas, who lowered her 100 backstroke school mark from 51.40 to 51.08 while leading off the 400 medley relay Thursday evening, took the record even lower Friday evening and became the first Longhorn to clear 51 seconds in the event.  The All-American clocked 50.86, good for the No. 2 time in the country this season.
 
Sophomore Remedy Rule led the Longhorns’ contingent in the 100 butterfly championship final with her second-place mark of 52.03, good for her second personal best in as many 100 fly swims on the day.  Texas freshman Lauren Case took eighth at 53. 37.    
 
All-America senior Madisyn Cox scored her second win in as many nights and put away a decisive victory in the 400 individual medley.  Cox, who eclipsed Kathleen Hersey’s seven-year-old school mark in the 200 IM on Thursday, posted the No. 3 mark in the country and the second-fastest time ever at UT with a 4:03.16, a personal best.  Senior Maggie D’Innocenzo added a 4:16.01 for sixth place. 
 
UT sophomore Joanna Evans, a Rio Olympian for The Bahamas, led the Texas contingent in the 200 freestyle with her third-place mark of 1:45.07.  Junior Rebecca Millard chipped in a 1:45.38 for fourth place while sophomore Remedy Rule clocked a 1:45.96 for fifth place.  Case added a seventh-place mark of 1:46.36. 
 
Sophomore Olivia Anderson paced the Horns in the 100 breaststroke with her 1:00.14 for third place.  Senior Jordan Surhoff added a 1:00.81 for seventh place. 
 
Texas’ “A” relay was disqualified for an early takeoff, so the Longhorns’ “B” relay – Adams, Anderson, Case and Jordan Wheeler - notched UT’s top finish at 1:39.14 for fourth place.

Freshman Louise Hansson blazed to a big win in the 100y fly, sophomores Riley Scott and Carsten Vissering swept the 100y breast, Troy did the same with the 200y medley relays and junior Dylan Carter set a school record in the men’s 100y fly to lead a big Friday night (Dec. 2) at the Texas Hall of Fame Swimming Invite in Austin.
 
Hansson, who posted an NCAA A cut in the 200y IM last night to go with her 200y free A cut set in October, notched her third with her 100y fly win, clocking a 51.17 to win by 0.86 and just 0.25 off Kendyl Stewart’s school record. Freshman Catherine Sanchez took seventh in the A final in 53.36 after a 53.25 in prelims. Sophomore Maddie Wright won the B final with a 53.18.
 
Carter followed with a huge swim to finish second in the 100y fly in 45.27, 0.33 back of Texas’ Jack Conger (44.94) and 0.52 better than junior teammate Santo Condorelli’s 2015 school record in the race. Senior Michael Domagala was 10th (46.87), leading four Trojans in the B final.
 
Freshman Becca Mann led USC’s women’s efforts in the 400y IM, 12th with a 4:19.29 while sophomore Sydney Lofquist was 13th (4:20.70). Sophomore Patrick Mulcare topped the USC men in the 400y IM, finishing eighth in 3:54.24 after a 3:51.26 in prelims.
 
Freshman Tatum Wade blasted a 1:44.44 for a PR in the 200y free to take second place while freshman Stanzi Moseley finished eighth (1:48.20, 1:46.52 in prelims). Senior Chelsea Chenault was 15th (1:48.02).
 
Scott gave USC its second win of the night with a 59.80 to win the 100y breast, leading four Trojans in the A final. Senior Kelsey Kafka turned in a PR 1:00.34 for fourth, sophomore Kirsten Vose was fifth (1:00.48) and senior Riley Hayward was eighth in 1:00.81 with another PR.
 
Vissering followed with a PR 52.17 to win the men’s 100y breast, a full second ahead of second place and 0.16 off Vladimir Morozov’s school record. Freshman Mario Koenigsperger was seventh in 53.79, both times B cuts. Seniors Steven Stumph (55.61) and Ridge Altman (55.67) were 14th and 15th, respectively.
 
Hansson came back to lead three Trojans in the 100y back A final, finishing fourth (52.14) after a 51.83 in prelims, 0.23 off the school record. Sophomore Hanni Leach was fifth (52.53) and junior Hannah Weiss, the school-record holder at 51.60, was eighth (53.70).  Senior Anika Apostalon won the B final with a 52.58.
 
USC finished off great night of racing by sweeping the 200y medley relays. The women won first as Weiss, Scott, Hansson and Apostalon hit the wall in 1:37.63, 0.81 ahead of Wisconsin. The men followed as Tribuntsov, Vissering, Carter and Condorelli won in 1:25.22, just 0.17 off an A cut.

AUSTIN, Texas - Three runner-up finishes and an all-around team effort led Stanford to a strong showing on Day 3 of the Texas Invitational at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
 
“Today was another great effort with the amount of top-10 times in the nation we swam,” said Goldman Family Director of Men’s Swimming Ted Knapp. “We’re very pleased with the amount of depth we have in several events.”
 
Andrew Liang paced the Cardinal in the first event of the night, the 100-yard butterfly. Liang touched in 46.41 for fifth place and Sam Perry (46.66) was just behind in sixth, with both swimmers cutting time from their morning swims. Brad Zdroik (47.01) finished fourth in the B-final, also improving his time from the morning session.
 
The 400-yard individual medley was hotly-contested with the five fastest swimmers finishing within one second of each other. Curtis Ogren (3:42.04) was out-touched by .39 seconds to finish second. Abrahm DeVine (3:42.15) was right there in third and Maxwell Williamson (3:42.53) rounded out the top four. Ogren, DeVine and Williamson all shaved at least four seconds off their morning times.
 
In the 200-yard freestyle, Grant Shoults (1:34.15) finished second with Liam Egan (1:35.22) in seventh and James Murphy (1:35.70) in eighth. Shoults took more than one and a half seconds off his prelim time after making the final as a result of Tom Kremer withdrawing to focus on the 100-yard backstroke. Kremer’s 1:34.66 was the second-fastest time in preliminaries.
 
Matt Anderson (53.24) was Stanford’s lone representative in the 100-yard breaststroke final, improving his preliminary time to finish third.
Ryan Dudzinski (47.08) led the Cardinal in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing fifth. Patrick Conaton (47.11) was sixth and Kremer (47.33) took seventh. Stanford had a one-two finish in the B-final, with Benjamin Ho (47.58) out-touching Jack Walsh (47.68) for the win. 
 
The quartet of Dudzinski, Anderson, Liang and Perry (1:25.58) ended the night on a high note for the Cardinal, finishing second in the 200-yard medley relay. Stanford’s “B” team of Walsh, Ogren, Jimmy Yoder and Kremer (1:27.90) finished seventh. 
 
The four-day meet, which has an environment similar to that of the Pac-12 and NCAA Championship meets, features hosts Texas, USC, Arizona, Brigham Young, Harvard, Denver and Oklahoma Baptist.
 
The Cardinal returns to action Saturday morning in preliminaries, beginning at 7 a.m. PT. Events include the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 1,650-yard freestyle. The evening session will also feature the 400-yard freestyle relay.

AUSTIN, Texas – Senior Amanda Sanders (Superior, Colo.) broke the school record in the 100 breast and junior Anton Loncar (Hillsboro, Ore.) broke the school record and is ranked second in the country in the men’s 100 back to lead the University of Denver men’s and women’s swimming programs on day three of the four-day Texas Invitational on Friday night at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. 
 
Loncar won the event to give the Pioneers’ their first event win of the invitational. 
 
Junior Heidi Bradley (Victoria, B.C.) picked up Denver’s first NCAA standard of the evening, finishing 11th overall in the women’s 100 butterfly with a time of 53.67. On the men’s side redshirt-senior Kyle Robrock (Savage, Minn.) also picked up a b standard with a 15th place finish on the men’s side in the 100 butterfly. 
 
Sophomore Bailey Andison (Smiths Falls, Ontario) gave the Pioneers a second place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:07.40, another NCAA B Standard for Denver. Junior Maddie Myers(Arvada, Colo.) also turned in a top-4 finish in the impressive field, clocking in at another NCAA B Standard time of 4:12.60. 
 
Freshman Colin Gilbert (Kamloops, B.C.) continued his impressive weekend, finishing 15th in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:36.94, also an NCAA B Standard. Junior Ray Bornman (Mackay, Queensland) was right behind the Denver rookie in the B Final with a time of 1:37.68 to also earn himself an NCAA B time. 
 
Sanders’ 100 breast school record was good for sixth in the very fast field and yet another NCAA B Standard for the Pioneers as she touched the wall in 1:00.65. 
 
Senior Tim Cottam (Sydney, Australia) turned in Denver’s next NCAA B Standard in the A Final of the men’s 100 breast, clocking in at 53.38, good for fourth in the event. Classmate Patrick Guillory (Meadows Place, Texas) also earned an NCAA B Standard in the event, finishing at 55.16 in the B Final, good for 19th overall. 
 
In the 21st event of the competition, senior Johanna Roas (Munich, Germany) and junior Morgan McCormick(Golden, Colo.) put NCAA B Standards to their name coming out of the B Final in the 100 back with times of 52.92 and 54.49, respectively. In addition to Loncar’s win in the 100 back on the men’s side, Robrock got an NCAA B time in the event and a 12th place finish by reaching the wall in 47.79. 
 
Loncar, Cottam, Robrock and freshman Sid Farber (Portland, Ore.) closed out that night with a fourth place finish in the 200 medley with a time of 1:27.69.
