Loyola Kicks Off H2Ounds Invitational

The H2Ounds Invitational kicked off in Baltimore today.

BALTIMORE, Md. - On the first day of the H2Ounds Invitational Meet at the Mangione Pool on Friday evening, both of the Loyola University men's and swimming teams turned in impressive showings, positioning themselves to compete for the championship on Saturday.

At the mid-point of the two-day meet, the Loyola women's team stands in first place with 364 points while Marist is second with 286 points. Iona (241) is third and Saint Peter's is fourth (46).

On the men's side, Marist leads the pack with 345 points while the Greyhounds are second with 293.5 points. Iona stands third (234.5), ahead of Saint Peter's.

Freshman Megan Adlem led the Greyhound women's team to its one-day lead by finishing first in two events. In the 400-medley relay, she teamed up with Courtney Kenyon, Annie Rayburn and Brooke Sharkey to win the event with a time of 3:51.09, the third-fastest time in school history.

Adlem also took first place in the 500-free with a time of 4:58.04, the second-fastest time in Loyola history. Junior Maddie Myers placed third in the 500-free.

In the 200 I.M., Emily Koegl finished second with a time of 2:07.70, the third-fastest time in school history. Senior Therese McCallum contributed a third place finish in the 200 I.M. While freshman Devin Cronin was fourth.

In the 400-medley relay, the “C” team of Jenna Egan, Tara Mulligan, Grace Huckenpoehler and Gabrielle Clarkson finished second with a time of 3:52.17. The Greyhounds showed off their depth in the 400-medley relay as the “B” team of Marie Clarkson, Cronin, Courtney Martin and Alden Coyne took third place with a time of 3:53.68.

The Greyhounds' 800-free relay team of Hayburn, Aly Pacitti, Myers and Adlem turned in a second place finish with a time of 7:40.08.

In the one-meter diving, Lindsey Staszewski took third place with 217.60 points.

Junior Ben Cono was the only individual first place finisher for the men's team. He won the 200 I.M. with a time of 1:52.19. He edged teammate Alex Munson (1:52.95) to win the event.

In the 400-medley relay, Munson and Cono joined senior Zeke Wolfgang and junior Alec Sperandio to finish first in the event with a time of 3:21.08.

Sperandino took second place in the 50-free (21.30).

in the 800-free relay, Munson, Chris Cary, Cono and freshman Zac Metzler turned in a second place finish with a time of 6:55.06.

Junior Sam Baluzy closed out the first day of competition by finishing third in the three-meter diving with 247.70 points.

The H2Ounds Invitational resumes on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Mangione Pool.

BALTIMORE - With 345 points, the Marist men’s swimming and diving team leads the pack at the H2ounds Invitational after the first session. The Red Foxes are in front of host Loyola (293.5 points), Iona (234.5 points) and Saint Peter’s (82 points).

The Red Foxes’ A and B 400-yard medley relay teams ended up three seconds apart, going 2-3 in the event to kick off the night. Sophomore Miguel Madeira led off for the third place squad and won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:33.21. He was followed by freshman Michael O'Donovan, who touched in 4:35.84. Madeira also anchored Marist’s 800-yard medley relay foursome, which clocked in at 6:48.67 for the top spot on the leaderboard.

Freshman Daniel Knoll picked up 20 points for the Red Foxes in the freestyle circuit, winning the 50-yard event in 21.04 seconds.

In the 3-meter dive, junior captain Peter Gallino’s 277 points were the most in the field. Freshman Raislan Aiken narrowly took second place with 247.95 points, a score that was .15 higher than that of Loyola junior Sam Baluzy.

BALTIMORE - The Marist women’s swimming and diving team is in second place out of four squads after the first six events of the H2ounds Invitational, which began Dec. 2. With 286 points, the Red Foxes are behind only the host Loyola Greyhounds (364 points) and ahead of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foes Iona (241 points) and Saint Peter’s (46 points).

Junior Sara Nestrowitz placed second in her first event, the 500-yard freestyle, in a time of 5:00.13 and swam third on Marist’s first place 800-yard freestyle relay squad. She joined junior Melanie Newton, senior Meredith Wurtz and junior Deirdre Connor in the event.

Wurtz led a 1-2 Red Fox finish in the 50-yard freestyle, touching in 23.85 seconds and junior Georgia Goldman was right behind her at 24.35 seconds.  

On the 1-meter board junior Megan Berardelli and sophomore Lauren Katz took the top two spots. Berardelli was first with 244.95 points and Katz (218.55 points) edged out Loyola sophomore Lindsey Staszewski by 0.95 points for second place. Staszewski had been unbeaten in dual meets this season entering the weekend.
