Indiana University head men’s swimming coach Ray Looze announced the addition of transfer Marwan Elkamash on Monday.
A three-time All-American, Elkamash comes to Bloomington from the University of South Carolina and will have one year of eligibility remaining beginning in 2016-17.
"Marwan is in outstanding addition to next year’s team,” Looze remarked. “He has already qualified for the Olympic Games in the 200 and 400m freestyle for Egypt. He is truly a world-class person and swimmer who will bring extensive international experience to our squad. Marwan is yet another important piece of the puzzle in our quest to be a top-five NCAA team."
Elkamash earned his spot on Team Egypt for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Charlotte last year, posting an Egyptian record time of 1:47.72 in the 200 freestyle and a mark of 4:48.15 in the 400 freestyle.
Elkamash swam for Egypt at the FINA World Championships in Barcelona in 2013 and also Kazan in 2015. He also participated in the Junior World Championships for Egypt in Lima, Peru.
At South Carolina, Elkamash was a three-time All-American in the 800 freestyle relay. During his junior campaign, he finished sixth at the SEC Championships in the 200 freestyle and posted 11 wins during the season, including seven in the 500 freestyle.
At the 2014 NCAA Championships, Elkamash placed 22nd in the 500 freestyle, 35th in the 200 freestyle and 42nd in the 100 freestyle.
Prior to college, Elkamash was ranked No. 1 in Egypt in the 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 freestyle events, winning six gold medals at the Arab Championships.
