St. Andrews Men Sweep Converse, Lenoir-Rhye

The St. Andrews University men’s and women’s swim team challenged two Div. II foes in the Lenoir-Rhyne Tri-meet on Friday with the men coming away victorious. Unfortunately, the women lost two close meets to LRU and Converse College (S.C.).
 
The Men’s Team took down Lenoir Rhyne with a thrilling finish in the 200 Free Relay by junior Cameron Dixon in the fourth leg (junior Elliot Boon, junior Josh Dixon, Tariq Getrouw, and C. Dixon) out touching the opposing team by .08 to give the Knights the win 126-124.  The Lady Knights, however, lost to Lenoir-Rhyne 92-143, while their competition against Converse was much closer, losing by a score of 128-109. Collectively, both teams won 11 of the 25 events entered Friday Night.
 
The Knights Relays got off to quick start with both the Men and Women winning their 200 Medley Relays. Xiomara Getrouw, Ira Vogt, Triniti Counter, and Tarryn Holmes easily took care of their competition winning by close to 5 seconds, while the men again easily handled Lenoir Rhyne by 4 seconds which included junior Georgi Krastev, Boon, junior Drew Gurley, and J. Dixon. SAU ended up winning three of the four relays that were contested.
 
Cameron Dixon placed 2nd in the 200 Free with a time of 1:54.09, followed by Max Hamilton, and Zak Bagby scoring points for 4th and 5th while Aliah Maginley swam a season-best time of 2:12 in the 200 free.
 
In the sprints (50 yard free), sophomore Tarryn Holmes finished 2nd with a time of 26.04, followed by freshman Jordan Kisselovich at 8th place with a season-best time of 30.58. In the 100 Free, Choolwe Lourens finished at 58.90 which was a season best time, good enough for 3rd.
 
Josh Dixon and Boon then impressively handled Lenoir Rhyne’s swimmers in the 50 free taking a 1-2 finish, at a time of 22.49 and 22.67, respectively. In the 100 Free, Nick Souza had a great breakout swim along with Boon; the men again swept first and second place at times of 50.50, and 50.87, respectively. Cameron Dixon also scored in the 100 with a finish of fifth and a time of 52.57.
 
In the 500 Freestyle, Max Hamilton led the way at 5:10.60 – a season best good enough for 2nd .
 
Georgi Krastev won both the 100 and 200 Backstrokes by crushing the competition finishing with a 54.96 and a 1:58.29, just off season-best times. Zak Bagby also scored with a 4th place finish with a season best time of 2:12.
In the 100 Backstroke Xiomara Getrouw finished 2nd (1:02.77) followed by Choolwe Lourens (1:04.8) for a 3rd place finish. Getrouw also finished 3rd in the 200 Backstroke (2:24).
 
Junior Ira Vogt was just out touched in a tight race in the 100 Breaststroke in 1:14.67, but had a season- best time, while Katie Keyes finished out at 1:18.24 for 5th place. In the 200 Breaststroke, Vogt finished with a season best of 2:46.37 for a 3rd place finish, while Keyes again placed 5th.
On the men’s side, freshman Sebastian Riano won the 200 Breast with a time of 2:21.11 followed by Tariq Getrouw who finished 3rd, with a season best time of 2:22.52. In the 100 yard event, Riano and Getrouw finished 2nd and 3rd, with a time of 1:03.59 and 1:03.87, respectively.
 
Triniti Counter had a great 200 Fly, bettering her season best time by about 3 seconds winning her event with a time of 2:13.84, winning by over 5 seconds.  In the 100 Fly, Counter finished 2nd while Holmes finished 3rd with times of 1:01.59 and 1:01.71.
The Men had great fly events; in the 100 Fly, Gurley won the event followed closely by Krastev (2nd) with times of 53.73 and 54.95. In the 200 Fly, Gurley earned a 2nd place finish of 2:02.99 – a season best time.
 
Counter won another event in the 200 IM, close to a season best time of 2:16.50. The Men greatly helped out the Knights win with Riano and Bagby finishing 4th and 5th, while Drew Gurley finished in 2nd place with a time of 2:06.83.
 
The men are now 1-1 on the year while the women are 1-2.
 
The swim teams will next be in action October 30 when the women host Div. III foe Greensboro College on Friday at 4 p.m. in their home opener. The men aren’t in action again until Nov. 20-21 at the Brenau (Ga.) Invite.
