Purdue Sweeps Indiana Intercollegiates

The Purdue men’s swimming and diving teams dominated multiple events to roll to a pair of sizable team victories Saturday afternoon at the annual Indiana Intercollegiates meet at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

The Purdue men racked up 920.5 points to best second-place Indianapolis by more than 600 points. The Purdue women finished with 896 points and were winners by 550 points over second-place Ball State. There were eight teams competing among each gender, although IUPUI only had its divers in attendance.

The Purdue women won all 12 events and the Purdue men were victorious in nine events.

Allie Davis (100 and 200 free) and Breanna Robinson (50 free and 100 fly) each won a pair of individual events and swam the leadoff leg on a victorious relay team.

For the men, Joe Cifelli (1-meter diving), Max Showalter (3-meter diving) and Alex Toetz (100 fly) all won an event and finished as the runner-up in another. Cifelli and Showalter dominated the springboard events. Showalter surpassed 400 points on 3-meter while posting his first collegiate victory.

Marat Amaltdinov (100 breast), Austin Flager (50 free) and Stephen Seliskar (100 back) all won an individual event and contributed to Purdue’s victory in the 200 medley relay to open the meet.

Mary Beth Dunnichay (1-meter diving), Morgan Meixner (3-meter diving), Emily Meckstroth (500 free), Hanna House (100 back), Caroline Weigand (100 breast) and Emily Fogle (200 IM) also won events for the Purdue women. Meixner, Meckstroth and House all posted their first victories as Boilermakers. Fogle and Meckstroth also contributed to relay winners.

Josh Ehrman won the 100 freestyle for the men. Jackson Higgins was the runner-up in both the 200 and 500 free as Purdue’s top finisher in both events. Nate Thomas won his heat of the 50 free, finished as the runner up in the 100 free and swam the leadoff leg on the victorious 200 free relay to close out the meet. Tim Barth won his heats of the 100 back and 200 free.

Grace Hernandez was the runner up in the 500 free, won her heat of the 100 fly and anchored the 200 medley relay team victory.

The Purdue men are back in action Saturday for a noon dual meet at new opponent South Carolina. The Purdue women are idle next weekend and return to action when they host Notre Dame and Ohio State for a Halloween triple dual meet at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The start time for that meet is expected to be announced Monday (Oct. 19).
