WPI Splits with Bowdoin, Swept by MIT

WPI Men

The WPI men’s swimming and diving team defeated Bowdoin, 168-130, and fell to NEWMAC foe MIT, 239-55, Saturday in a double dual at the LeRoy Greason Pool.
 
Junior Andrew Bauer (Cumberland, RI) placed second in all three freestyle sprints while also helping the 400-yard freestyle relay to a runner up finish. He clocked a 21.65 in the 50, a 47.13 in the 100 and 1:44.07 in the 200. He later teamed with sophomore Karim Elsayed (Cairo, Egypt), senior Alex Powers (North Scituate, RI) and sophomore David Smallwood (Bangor, ME) to post a 3:12.91 in the relay.
 
Sophomore Randy Melanson (Attleboro, MA) posted third-place dives on both boards as he totaled 229.20 on the 1-meter and 205.73 on the 3-meter.
 
The team of freshman Jack Bauer (Cumberland, RI), junior Andrew Kelleher (Poughquag, NY), junior Seth MacDonald (Sherrill,  NY) and senior Nathan Hughes (Arlington, VA) collaborated to place fourth in the 200-yard medley relay. Jack Bauer went on to touch the wall fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (54.60) and seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (53.34) as Kelleher was fourth in the 100-yard (1:00.64) and 200-yard (2:14.85) breaststroke. MacDonald added a fifth place showing in the 200-yard IM (2:00.83).
 
Sophomore Cam Back (St. Louis, MO) was fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.39) as classmates James Macfarlane (Ijamsville, MD) and Craig Barrett (Edinburgh, Scotland) were sixth in the 1,000-yard (10:10.94) and 500-yard (5:06.04), respectively. Powers was the fastest Boynton Hiller in the 200-yard backstroke with a seventh-place 2:00.58.
 
The Engineers host the third annual three-day Gompei Invitational beginning on Friday, December 4th.

 

WPI Women

The WPI women’s swimming and diving team was upended twice on Saturday in a double dual at Bowdoin which also featured conference-power MIT. The Engineers fell to the hosts, 189-111, and were felled by Cambridge’s Engineers 227-73.
 
Senior Veronica Nikolaki (Athens, Greece) was the only Crimson and Gray runner up as she amassed 244.50 points in the 1-meter dive. She also finished fifth on the 3-meter board with a score of 214.95.
 
Sophomore Jenny Day (Chelmsford, MA) was part of three third-place finishes as she posted a 2:00.86 in the 200-yard freestyle and a 5:19.98 in the 500-yard freestyle and was on the 400-yard freestyle relay squad that teamed up to turn in a 3:48.73. She was joined by junior Emily Martin (Penfield, NY), junior Eva Childers (Henniker, NH) and sophomore Emily Matsco (Windham, NH).
 
Martin added fourth place efforts in the 50-yard (25.56) and 100-yard (55.87) freestyle as well as the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.06). Matsco also came home fourth in an individual event as she posted a time of 11:23.33 in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
 
Junior Zoe Eggleston (Newtown, CT) touched the wall fourth in the 100-yard (1:12.80) and 200-yard (2:39.67) breaststroke.
 
The 200-yard medley relay foursome of junior Marissa Patterson (Hampton, NH), Eggleston, Childers and junior Tori Claverie (Derry, NH) was fifth in a time of 1:56.12 as Patterson was also fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.32) and sixth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:20.63).
 
Day finished sixth in the 200-yard IM (2:18.53) as was sophomore Kaitlin Travers (Northampton, MA) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:21.79).
 
WPI is idle until the three-day Gompei Invitational beginning on Friday, December 4th.
