St. Mary's Men

The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's swim team opened up the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Swimming Championship on Friday and currently stand fourth in the six-team field with 104 points.

The three-day event will wrap up on Sunday, February 22nd with the crowning of the team champion. The University of Mary Washington Eagles is pursuing its 21st overall (15th consecutive) conference championship title and hold the No. 1 spot in the team standings with 268 after claiming gold in all five events.

Sophomore Matt Walchuck (Middletown, Md./Middletown) picked up the Seahawks' highest finish of the night in the 200 individual medley. Walchuck placed fourth in the event in 1:57.38 while senior captain Bobby Witkop (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took eighth in 2:00.89. First-year Kieran Broder (Olney, Md./Georgetown Prep) placed 13th in 2:01.61 after taking fourth in the consolations.

The foursome of junior Zach Lilley (Myersville, Md./Middletown), Witkop, sophomore Andrew Braker (Olney, Md./Sherwood), and junior Michael Speer (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) claimed a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:28.04.

Junior Grant Burgess (Fallston, Md./Fallston) led St. Mary's in the 500 freestyle with a seventh-place finish in 4:48.35.

First-year Max Madden (Cape St. Clair, Md./Broadneck) placed 10th in 4:53.61 and junior Kian Karimi (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) was 11th in 4:57.16 after taking second and third, respectively, in the consolation finals. Sophomore Andrew Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) tallied a 13th-place finish in the event in 5:02.13.

Lilley finished the night with a seventh-place finish in the 50 freestyle in 21.86 while Speer added a 12th-place finish in 22.27.

The Seahawks, unfortunately, did not score any points in the last event of the night – the 400 medley relay – as the foursome was disqualified for a false start.

St. Mary's (Md.) Women

Juniors Cara Machlin (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) and Zoe McIlmail (Frederick, Md./Urbana) gave record-setting performances in the 500 freestyle to lead the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's swim team on the opening day of the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Swimming Championships.

Machlin garnered second team All-CAC honors in the 500 free with her school record time of 5:11.69 while McIlmail finished third in the event in 5:11.80. These times are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, all-time in the Seahawk record books. Both times broke the six-year old mark of 5:12.27 set by Brie McDowell '09 at the 2009 CAC championship meet.

St. Mary's is currently second in the team standings with 149 events through Event 10. The Seahawks are facing a stiff challenge from third-place Marymount (Va.) University who's only seven points behind.

The Seahawks notched a pair of second-place finishes in tonight's relay events.

The foursome of senior Hannah Hafey (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley), Machlin, senior captain Kelsey Abernathy (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), and first-year Elizabeth Straathof (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) took second in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.39 for second team all-league honors.

Hafey, senior captain Brooke Raab (Parkton, Md./Hereford), Machlin, and McIlmail came together for a second-place finish in the 400 medley relay in 3:58.51 for second team all-conference honors.

Senior captain Elaina Kohles (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) placed sixth in the 500 free in 5:17.90 while first-year Rachel Sonnenberg (Derwood, Md./Magruder) came in fourth in the 500 free consolation final with a time of 5:32.17 for 12th overall.

Hafey touched the wall in 24.97 in the 50 freestyle for seventh place while Straathof won the consolation final in 24.89 for ninth overall. Abernathy claimed 11th overall in the 200 individual medley after placing third in the consolation final with a time of 2:17.65 while junior Karlie Straight (Ocean City, Md./Decatur) tallied a 14th-place finish in 2:21.84.

Salisbury

The Salisbury University men's and women's swimming teams concluded day one of the Capital Athletic Conference Swimming Championships, breaking three school records and recording six top-five finishes.

Junior Will Gough qualified for the 50-yard freestyle finals this morning when he took third in the preliminaries in a time of 21.32 seconds, which tied his own school record that he set last year in the CAC Championships. In the finals, Gough captured second place and cut his time to 21.09 seconds, breaking the school record.  

In the same event, junior Jake Blazer swam to a 10th-place finish in a time of 21.92 seconds, cutting his preliminary time by .2 seconds.

Sophomore Victoria Radcliffe qualified for the final in the 200-yard individual medley when she placed fifth in the event during the preliminaries in a time of 2:13.20. Radcliffe would improve her time in the finals, placing fourth and smashing the school record she set last season by over two seconds with a time of 2:10.64.

Sophomore Layne Gable took seventh in the 200-yard individual medley finals, which was good for a time of 2:17.94, while sophomore Nicole Marders marked a 2:17.01 time and a ninth place.

The third school record of the night came in the men's 400-yard medley relay. A team of senior Daniel Keller, sophomore Okan Eyigor, Gough, and Blazer crushed the 3:37.72 record set last season with a final time of 3:33.02. The foursome took fourth in the event.

For the women in the 400-yard medley relay, freshman Bizu Baldinazzo, junior Nicki Schult, Radcliffe, and Marders grabbed fourth in a time of 4:10.40, just missing another school record.

In the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, a group of senior Rich Ambrose, sophomore Scott Schirmer, Gough, and Blazer swam to a third-place finish and notched a time of 1:27.25.

The women grabbed a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as junior Andria Moyer, Radcliffe, Baldinazzo, and Gable finished with a time of 1:42.99.

In the preliminaries for the women's 500-yard freestyle, Schult and sophomore Claudia Guayqualified for the finals with Schult posting a time of 5:33.15, qualifying 11th, while Guay recorded a time of 5:38.00 qualifying in 16th place. In the finals for the event, Schult finished in 5:20.98, just under 13 seconds faster than her preliminary time for a ninth-place finish. Guay also improved her time in the finals, taking 15th place with a time of 5:32.86.

Three gulls finished in the top-16 in the men's 200-yard individual medley. Freshman Conor Johnston took 11th in a time of 2:00.21 and sophomore Travis Maida recorded a time of 2:03.28 for 15th. Junior Sean DiFatta finished right behind Maida in the 16th spot, finishing with a time of 2:03.96.

Salisbury's efforts for the day have the women sitting in fourth place, with 112 points, and the men in fifth, with 95 points, heading into the second day of the CAC Swimming Championships on Saturday, February 21, with the preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m., and the finals starting at 6 p.m.
