Denver Grabs Both Leads at Summit League Meet

Day Two of the 2015 Summit League Swimming & Diving Championships saw more records fall at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI Thursday night. The Denver women overtook the top spot from host IUPUI by collecting 343 points to IUPUI’s 225. South Dakota State tallied 194 to round out the top three spots. The Denver men extended their lead to 389-234 over IUPUI, with South Dakota State in third with 198.

The Denver men swept the podium in the 200 IM and the 500 free. The women’s 500 freestyle final contained seven Pioneers out of the eight finalists while there were six Pioneer men in the 500 free final.

Dylan Bunch of the University of Denver began the record breaking by setting a new all-time league time of 4:18.22 in the men’s 500 freestyle final. His teammate Johanna Roas quickly backed that up with a record of her own in the 200 IM, touching in at 2:00.19. Both times are NCAA provisional marks.

Drew Matthews broke her own Summit League record in the morning prelims with a time of 22.80. Teammate Zoe Huddleston finished second in the event and Omaha’s Natalie Renshaw came in third.

Two Jackrabbit swimmers earned a spot on the podium next to Pioneer swimmer Ray Bornman, who earned the top of the medal stand. Bornman clocked in at 20.06 and teammates Ben Bolinske and Daniel Jacobson came in at 20.26 and 20.44, respectively.

Both the men’s and women’s 200 freestyle relay teams took the medal stand in the same order: Denver, IUPUI and South Dakota State.

Ross Edfort from Denver narrowly beat out IUPUI’s Cody Watts, 305.55-305.20, in the men’s one-meter diving final. Ryan Church of Denver came in third with 279.90.
