George Washington Wraps Up Quad Meet

The GW men's swimming and diving team closed the two-day quad-meet with local rivals American, Catholic and Loyola (Md.) on Saturday with several impressive finishes at the Eagles' Reeves Aquatic Center.

Four Colonials earned top honors in their respective events, led by senior Adam Rabe and sophomore Ben Fitch, who each won a pair of races to pace GW on the day.

Fitch first won the 100-yard butterfly in 51.43 seconds, followed by senior Goran Koprivnjak (52.89) in third and junior Oliver Keegan (53.09) in fourth. Fitch then raced to a first-place finish in the 200 fly with a time of 1:54.89, while Koprivnjak claimed second place in 1:56.48 and Keegan finished in a close third in 1:56.74.

Rabe won the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.86 seconds and sophomore Bogdan Balteanu took home third in 1:01.44. Rabe then followed with his second win of the day in the 200 breast with a time of 2:10.86. In the 100-yard freestyle, Balteanu clocked in at 47.57 seconds for a first-place finish, and Fitch (49.06), freshman Adam Drury (49.52) and classmate Gustav Hokfelt (49.43) claimed third, sixth and seventh places, respectively.

Koprivnjak earned the top spot in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:13.27 and Balteanu took home third in 4:18.46. Hokfelt claimed second place in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.70 before earning third in the 200 back in 1:58.93. Rookie Parker Boutwell finished sixth in the 200 back in 2:01.82.

Boutwell also landed third place in the 200 free when he clocked in at 1:45.97, while Fitch finished fourth (1:46.19), Drury placed sixth (1:47.58), sophomore Liam Huffman took seventh (1:48.28) and freshman Connor Hart finished eighth (1:48.78). Huffman closed the evening action with a second-place finish in the 1,650 free in 16:53.81.

GW returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 18, when it travels to Bucknell for its first dual meet of the season at 1 p.m.

 

The George Washington women's swimming and diving team closed the final day of its quad-meet with American, Catholic and Loyola (Md.) on Saturday with five first-place finishes at the Eagles' Reeves Aquatic Center.

Four Colonials won their individual races, led by senior Janica Lee, who paced all swimmers with two victories and a second-place finish on the day.

Lee first won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.32, and juniors Lauren Steagall (1:07.90) and Mara Debnekoff (1:08.80) followed in second and fourth place, respectively. Lee then won the 200 breast in 2:26.18, while Steagall finished second in 2:28.55 and Debnekoff placed fifth in 2:33.27.

Sophomore Lauren Law took home top honors in the 400-yard individual medley when she clocked in at 4:40.53. In the 100-yard butterfly, senior Morgan Zebley claimed first place with a time of 58.54 seconds, while sophomore Carly Whitmer followed in a close second in 58.72 seconds and senior Bianca Valencia finished fourth in 1:00.16. Whitmer then won the 200 fly when she touched the wall in 2:09.22, and Valencia earned second in 2:11.47.

Lee finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.16 and junior Madison Reinker finished third with a time of 1:57.35. Freshman Abigail Fusco(1:57.71) took home fourth, classmate Hannah Kopydlowski (1:58.58) finished sixth and Whitmer (1:59.51) finished seventh.

Fusco earned second-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events with times of 59.65 seconds and 2:08.62, respectively, and classmate Tatyana Smolyansky finished fifth in the 200 back in 2:12.63. Reinker wrapped the meet with a second-place finish in the 1,650 free with a time of 18:06.35, and juniorEmma Gaquin took home third in 18:09.75.

GW returns to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 18, with its first dual meet of the season when the squad travels to Bucknell at 1 p.m.
