Texas Dominating Big 12's

By Austin Anderson

On the third day of action at the 2014 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships, the Longhorns continued their dominance, shattering three championship meet records and two Big 12 Conference records.

In the day’s preliminaries, Lily Moldenhauer broke the Big 12 championship, Big 12 all meet and Texas school record in the 100-yard backstroke in 51.55. Moldenhauer broke Kathleen Hersey (Texas) and Paige Miller’s (Missouri) time of 51.78.

Maren Taylor picked up her second title of the meet when she broke a Big 12 record and a school record in the women’s three-meter diving event with a score of 414.20. Coupled with her one-meter diving win on Thursday, Taylor becomes the first female to win the one and three-meter diving titles in the same season since Jaele Patrick (Texas A&M) in 2010.

In the 400-yard individual medley, Chelsie Miller became the first-ever Jayhawk to claim an individual title at the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships. Miller claimed the crown with a time of 4:07.97. On the men’s side, Will Licon of Texas picked up the 400 IM title in 3:46.96.

The ‘Horns swept the 100-yard butterfly. On the men’s side, Jack Conger of UT won in 45.56, while Lily Moldenhauer took the women’s win in 51.92, a Big 12 Championship record. Moldenhauer’s erased former Longhorn Katleen Jersey’s record of 52.08.

Clay Youngquist continued the Longhorns' winning ways defending his 2013 200-yard freestyle title. Youngquist won the event in 1:34.21. Teammate Alex Hooper won on the women’s side with a time of 1:45.17.

The second half of the night began with a Texas sweep in the 100-yard breaststroke. A 1:00.21 finish gave Gretchen Jaques the women’s title. Imri Ganiel followed with a 53.45 finish on the men’s side.

Mountaineer Bryce Bohman picked up West Virginia’s second title of the meet in the 100-yard backstroke. Bohman bested defending champion Kip Darmody with a time of 45.89. The three-time Big 12 Swimmer of the Week adds the seventh Big 12 title to WVU’s history books since beginning competition in the league.

After breaking a conference, championship meet and school record in the morning’s 100-yard backstroke preliminaries, Lily Moldenhauer etched her name even deeper into Texas history by breaking her own record. In the finals, Moldenhauer bested her prelim time of 51.55 with a 51.48 finish. The title was her second of the day.

In the men's three-meter diving event, Cory Bowersox of Texas defended his Big 12 title, taking the event with a score of 472.35.

An exciting day of action concluded with the 200-yard freestyle relays. On the women's side, the Texas women's team of Ellen Lobb, Gretchen Jaques, Lily Moldenhauer and Sam Tucker took the win in 1:29.41. The Texas men's quad of Matt Ellis, Tripp Cooper, John Murray and Charles Moore followed suit with an NCAA "A" cut time of 1:17.41. Close behind the Longhorns were the Mountaineers who also picked up an NCAA "A" cut time of 1:17.87.

The final day of competition kicks off Saturday morning with prelims at 10 a.m. CT, followed by the men's platform diving finals at 4:30 p.m., and swimming events beginning at 6 p.m. Team and individual trophy presentations will begin immediately following the conclusion of the 400-yard freestyle relay.
