Incarnate Word Men Take CCSA Lead, Liberty Women Holding Strong

The University of the Incarnate Word men took over first place with 618 points after the third day of the 2014 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Swimming and Diving Championships contested Friday at the University of Tennessee’s Allan Jones Aquatic Center.  Also on day three, eight meet records and seven Conference records fell.
 
The University of the Incarnate Word men took over first place with 618 points.  UMBC sits second in the standings with 596 points.  Davidson holds the third spot with 445.5 points followed by Gardner-Webb with 334 points.  NJIT remained in fifth place with 151.5 points and VMI is in sixth with 124 points.  Howard rounds out the standings with 76 points.
 
David Moore from the University of the Incarnate Word won the 400-yard Individual Medley by nearly nine seconds, posting a mark of 3:47.97, an NCAA “B” qualifying time.  Grant Smith finished in second-place with a time of 3:56.97 and Incarnate Word’s Aaron Norton finished third with a time of 3:58.81.
 
In the 100-yard butterfly, UIW’s Daniel Torres set a CCSA Conference and meet record with a time of 46.65 which qualifies as an NCAA “B” cut.  Incarnate Word swept the podium in the event with Andrii Nikishenko (48.37) and Jorge Escarcega (49.28) rounding out the podium in second and third, respectively.
 
Records continued to fall in the 200-yard freestyle as Evandro Silva of Incarnate Word set the Conference and meet record with a time of 1:35.77.  Davidson’s Dylan Ludwick also topped the previous record with a time of 1:36.51 which is an NCAA “B” cut qualifying time.  Gregor Spoerlein from UMBC took third-place touching in 1:38.08.
 
After setting the Conference and meet record with a time of 54.21 in the 100-yard breaststroke in the preliminaries, Thiago Parravicini from UIW topped his time in the finals touching in 53.00.  The second-place finisher was teammate Rostik Fedyna with a time of 54.18, while UMBC’s Leo Endres finished third with a mark of 54.84.  All three time qualify as NCAA “B” cut times.
 
The 100-yard backstroke was separated by 15 hundredths of a second with UMBC’s Mohamed Hussein setting the Conference and meet record with a time of 47.67.  Daniel Torres of Incarnate word finished second touching in at 47.82 and teammate Andrii Nikishenko took third-place with a time of 49.27.
 
For the second consecutive night UMBC swept the podium in men’s diving.  Pak Lam Wong topped the podium by winning the 1-meter dive with a zone qualifying score of 309.40.  Ryan Green scored 301.70 points which is also a zone qualifying time, while Timmy Perkins finished third after tallying 275.15 points.
 
The Incarnate Word team of Andrii Nikishenko, Daniel Torres, Thiago Parravicini and Evandro Silva closed out a fast day in the pool by setting the Conference and meet record in the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:12.27.  The UMBC team of Mohamed Hussein, Leo Endres, Lauri Kaei and Gregor Spoerlein also clipped the previous record with a mark of 3:14.41 and Gardner-Webb (Connor Bos, Jordan Denmark, Brandon Searle and Nathan Lile) touched third with a time of 3:20.34.
 
The CCSA Championship will continue with the final day of action on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10:00 a.m., starting with the men’s 200-yard backstroke preliminaries.  The event finals for day three will start at 6:00 p.m.



The Liberty women remain in first place with 471 points after the third day of the 2014 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Swimming and Diving Championships contested Friday at the University of Tennessee’s Allan Jones Aquatic Center.  Also on day three, six meet records and seven Conference records fell.
 
Florida Gulf Coast is second with 453 points and Georgia Southern moved into third with 305 points.  Davidson College is fourth with 257 points, while the University of the Incarnate Word is fifth with 216 points.  Gardner-Webb is alone in sixth with 204 points and Campbell is in seventh with 170 points.  Behind Campbell is North Florida with 123 points and Radford is ninth with 81 points.  Howard is alone in 10th place with 72 points, while UNC Asheville sits in 11th place with 67 points.  Rounding out the standings are VMI in 12th place with 48 points and North Carolina A&T with 32 points.
 
Florida Gulf Coast started the evening session with a win by Karen Vilorio in the 400-yard Individual Medley with a NCAA “B” cut time of 4:19.19.  Kylie Warne of Campbell University followed in second with a time of 4:20.27.  Liberty’s Emily Duff finished in third-place with a time of 4:21.02.
 
After setting the Conference and meet record in the 100-yard butterfly preliminaries, Liberty’s Jess Reinhardt was just three hundredths of a second behind with a time of 52.17 to win the event.  Her teammate, Bethany Wakeley, finished second with a time of 53.91, while Gardner-Webb’s Giorgie Graves finished with touching in 54.32.  All three swimmers posted NCAA “B” qualifying times.
 
Freshman Kira Toussaint from FGCU set a Conference and meet record in the 200-yard freestyle touching in 1:47.02.  After setting the top mark in the morning’s preliminary swim, Davidson’s Elise Lankiewicz finished second with a time of 1:48.57.  Heather McCorkel of Liberty finished in third with a mark of 1:49.07.
 
Records continued to be broken in the 100-yard breaststroke as Liberty’s Emilie Kaufman posted a time of 1:00.01, setting the Conference and meet records.  She was followed by Kristen Bates of Georgia Southern with a time of 1:01.52, while Florida Gulf Coast’s Tryshia Centeno finished in third-place with a time of 1:02.12.  Each time qualified as NCAA “B” cuts times.
 
Kira Toussaint followed up her top qualifying time from the prelims to win the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 52.15.  Her time of 51.68 in the preliminaries set a Conference and meet record and an NCAA “A” qualifying time.  Sandra Wilk, also from FGCU, took second-place with a time of 54.68, while Kendall Hough of Liberty finish third with a mark of 54.66.
 
Liberty’s 400-yard medley relay team of Kendall Hough, Emilie Kaufman, Jess Reinhardt and Meghan Babcock set a Conference and meet record with a time of 3:36.73.  Georgia Southern (Christina Moran, Kristen Bates, Megan Ostrom and Elaina Lanson) touched second with a time of 3:45.29, while Davidson (Elise Lankiewicz, Katy Williams, Meredith Nakano and Angie Healy) finished in third-place with a mark of 3:45.31. 
 
The CCSA Championship wraps up competition on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10:00 a.m., starting with the women’s 200-yard backstroke preliminaries.  The event finals for the final day will start at 6:00 p.m.
