Wingate Sweeps Bluegrass Mountain Meet

The Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams won both Bluegrass Mountain Conference championship meet titles for the second year in row Sunday night at the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center (MCAC) pool in downtown Charlotte. The Bulldog men rallied to take their seventh consecutive crown, while the WU women claimed their second straight title and fourth overall

Johns Hopkins Men

The Johns Hopkins men's swim team picked up 268 points on the final day of the 2016 Bluegrass Mountain Conference (BMC) Championship to finish with bronze. Freshman Andrew Greenhalgh led the way for the Blue Jays on the final day with his second silver medal of the championship, taking second in the 1650 Free. Host Wingate won its seventh straight title with 1394.5 points, beating Queens University by just 45 points. Hopkins finished the championship with 915.5 points for its third straight bronze finish at the championship.

Greenhalgh opened the final day of the championship with silver in the 1650 Free, to go with his silver in the 1000 Free. He finished in 15:34.45, the fifth fastest in program history. Freshman Josh Hughes then finished in 16:02.59, to just beat out sophomore Billy Gravley by 0.52 of a second for fifth place. Sophomore Michael McGoldrick followed in seventh place with a time of 16:12.91. All four times by the Blue Jays are NCAA provisional times.

Junior Ryan Cunningham then placed sixth in the B Final, 14th overall, of the 200 Back, finishing with a provisional time of 1:51.18. Freshman Patrick Flynn followed in eighth place as he clocked in at 1:51.91, a provisional time. Senior Anthony Lordi then won the B Final of the 100 Free, touching in a provisional time of 45.48. Senior Will Kimball took fifth in the final, clocking at 45.84. Freshman Scott Sterrett placed second in the B Final of the 200 Breast as he finished with a provisional time of 2:04.87, while senior Joe Acquaviva took third in the C Final with a time of 2:08.92. 
 
 
 

Junior Greg Kogut and freshman Muhammad Hudhud then went one-two in the B Final of the 200 Fly. Kogut got the win with a provisional time of 1:52.82, while Hudhud touched in 1:54.09. Hopkins closed out the championship with a fifth-place finish in the 400 Free Relay. Kimball, Lordi, freshman Evan Holder and Cunningham combined for a provisional time of 3:02.81. In addition, Kimball swam a lead off leg of 45.72, a provisional time.
Hopkins returns to action in four and a half weeks at the 2014 NCAA Championship. The championship is slated for March 19-22 in Indianapolis, IN.

Johns Hopkins Women

Junior Ana Bogdanovski grabbed her third individual title on the final night of the 2014 Bluegrass Mountain Conference (BMC) Championship to lead the Johns Hopkins women’ swim team to a third place finish. The Blue Jays accumulated 394 points on the final day for a three-day total of 1245.5. Host Wingate won its second straight title with 1395.5 total points to beat out Queen University, which finished with 1283.5 points.

Bogdanovski’s three individual titles at one championship matches the school record, held by nine different swimmers, including seniors Taylor Kitayama and Sarah Rinsma. Kitayama finishes with a school record 17 overall conference titles (7 individual, 10 relay). Rinsma counts 14 total conference titles (4 individual, 10 relay) to her credit, good for second in program history. Kitayama and Rinsma’s 10 relay titles rank second behind only Elizabeth Rogers, who graduated with 11 in 2012.

Freshman Lindsay Kriz opened the final day of the championship with a fifth place finish in the 1650 Free. She clocked in at 17:37.39, an NCAA provisional time. Kitayama then claimed silver in the 200 Back as she touched in 1:58.59. It is the second fastest time in school history, just 0.26 of a second off her own school record, and a provisional time. Junior Sammi Fox won the B Final, finishing ninth overall, as she finished with n provisional time of 2:03.57 to win by nearly three seconds. Sophomore Sean McGrath placed third in the final (2:07.21) and junior Hannah Benn placed sixth (2:08.41).

Bogdanovski followed with an impressive win in the 100 Free to claim her third individual title of the championship, to go with the 50 and 200 Free. She beat the field to the wall in a school-record 50.03, winning by more than six-tenths of a second. Her time is also a provisional time and improved her on her then school record swim in the morning prelim (50.15). Senior Kylie Ternes grabbed fourth place with a time of 51.43, while senior Sarah Rinsma took seventh place in 52.08 - both are provisional times. In the B Final, sophomore Ellen Marcus took third place (11th overall) in 52.54, while junior Jillian Liwacz took fourth in 52.82. Freshman Emily Lubin won the C Final as she finished in 53.35 while classmate Kailyn Koh claimed fourth (20th overall) in 53.56.
Junior Maggie Storm grabbed silver in the 200 Breast, as she touched in 2:21.29 – a provisional time and the sixth fastest in program history. In the final individual event of the championship, freshman Abby Brown led a contingent of three Blue Jays in the top eight of the 200 Fly. Brown claimed bronze with the second fastest time in program history, 2:04.90. Freshman Shirley Chan followed in fourth place with a time of 2:05.62, the third fastest time in program history, while classmate Keri Gawlik finished in eighth in 2:08.26. All three times are provisional times.

Hopkins closed out the weekend with another relay title, as the Blue Jays won the 400 Free Relay. Rinsma, Marcus, Ternes and Bogdanovski combined for a winning time of 3:23.12. The quartet’s time is a provisional time and the second fastest in program history. The Blue Jays trailed when Bogdanovski went into the water on the last leg, but she beat Queens’ Kristin Diemer to the wall by 1.96 seconds to give JHU a 1.66 second-win.
