Pepperdine Takes Second at PCSC Championships

The final day of the PCSC Championships was a memorable one for the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team, with countless season and personal bests, new program records and even a race win for the conference title. The Waves placed fifth overall, marking their highest finish since 2010.

Not surprising, Jessica Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) was spectacular in arguably her best event: the 200 breaststroke. She first broke her own 2013 Pepperdine record in the prelims (2:18.76) before cutting over two seconds off her time in the finals.

The sophomore, who entered the finals in third place, turned up her pace and won in a personal and Pepperdine record time of 2:16.04 – nearly two seconds faster than her closest competitor. (Click here to see Mosbaugh announced as the race winner)

Mosbaugh broke three total program records at the 2014 PCSC Championship. In addition to her performance today in the 200 breaststroke, she also set new records in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. She finished the meet with 85 points, tied for fifth overall out of the 139 different student-athletes who earned at least one point.

Emily Parks (San Antonio, Texas/Communications Arts HS) earned All-PCSC honors in the 200 backstroke. After clocking a 2:07.45 in the prelims, Parks took seventh in the finals with a time of 2:06.76.

For the second day in a row, Allison Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS) broke into the top-five ranks on Pepperdine’s all-time list. The sophomore lowered her personal best in the 100 freestyle twice, first in the prelims with a time of 52.82 and again in the finals with a mark of 52.21. That time put Naasz in 10th place at the meet and fourth in the Waves’ annuls.

Kristine Pataray (West Jordan, Utah/Copper Hills HS) followed in 17th with a season-best swim of 53.42.

Pepperdine was led in the 200 butterfly by Kathrine Kuhlmann (Liberty, Mo./Liberty HS). The freshman posted a personal-best time in the prelims before bettering that time by an additional five seconds in the finals for ninth place.

Nicolette Barreiro (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS) took 11th behind her season-best performance of 2:15.60.

Blair Kacynski (Superior, Colo./Monarch HS) and Codie Cox (Sonoma, Calif./Maria Carrillo HS/Santa Rosa JC) turned in top-25 times as well to add valuable points to the Waves’ total.

In the 1,650 freestyle, Erin Himes (West Chester, Pa./Unionville HS) turned in a personal-best time of 18:19.88 for ninth overall. Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) also lowered her all-time best to end her four years at Pepperdine on a high note. The swimmer-diver combo student-athlete clocked a 19:04.34 for 15th place.

Naasz, Laura Graziano (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS), Ally Bernard (Porterville, Calif./Monache HS/Cuesta College) and Pataray put the finishing touches on a stellar day, picking up All-PCSC status behind a sixth-place finish in the 400 free relay.

Sydney Newman (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge HS) earned two top-five finishes earlier this week in the 1-meter and 3-meter and was announced as a top-three point scorer amongst the divers.

Pepperdine scored 816.5 points to take fifth overall.

An impressive 20 student-athletes scored points for the Waves.
