PCSC Recaps: Day 3

Pepperdine

It was another successful day at the PCSC Championship for the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team. Jessica Mosbaugh broke another program record, her second of the meet, while Allison Naasz picked up All-PCSC honors in the 200 freestyle.

Pepperdine maintained its fourth-place position in the overall team standings and enters the final day of competition with 597.5 points.

Mosbaugh (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) broke the 100 breaststroke record – twice in fact – to bring her Pepperdine record collection to three. The sophomore broke Kayleen Hicks’ 2010 record time of 1:04.47 with a preliminary performance of 1:04.14.

After entering the finals as the No. 4 seed, Mosbaugh broke the record yet again, this time finishing second overall with a time of 1:03.42.

Also scoring points in the 100 breaststroke finals were Emma Fitzsimmons (Southport, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe HS) and Kelly Presper (Irmo, S.C./Hammond School). The pair finished in the top-25 with times of 1:13.02 and 1:16.51, respectively.

Naasz (Lodi, Calif./Tokay HS) broke into the top-five program ranks after a stellar performance in the 200 freestyle. She first clocked a personal-best time of 1:53.86 in the prelims, and then pushed her time to a 1:53.43 in the finals for fifth overall. Her time also counted as the fifth fastest mark in Pepperdine history.

This is the first time Naasz has earned All-PCSC acclaim in an individual event.

Freshman Laura Graziano (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic HS) found her way into the top-20, placing 16th in the 200 free with a time of 1:59.89. Graziano swam marginally faster (1:59.23) in the prelims to lower her personal record.

Freshman diver Sydney Newman (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge HS) delivered her second top-five performance of the meet, placing fifth in the 1-meter springboard after taking runner-up honors in the 3-meter on Wednesday. She broke the 200 points benchmark in both the prelims and the finals.

The Waves’ other three divers, Stephanie Ertl (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS), Priyanka Shah (Fremont, Calif./Irvington HS) and Amber Rosche (Aberdeen, Wash./Aberdeen HS/Grays Harbor CC), all scored points for Pepperdine as well.

Emily Parks (San Antonio, Texas/Communications Arts HS) earned a top-10 finish in the 100 backstroke. The freshman posted a time of 58.85 – good enough for ninth.

The Waves were led in the 100 butterfly by Nicolette Barreiro (Valencia, Calif./Hart HS), who produced a season-best performance of 59.07 before recording a 59.49 in the finals for 12th place.

Kathrine Kuhlmann (Liberty, Mo./Liberty HS), Kristine Pataray (West Jordan, Utah/Copper Hills HS) and Codie Cox (Sonoma, Calif./Maria Carrillo HS/Santa Rosa JC) all placed in the top-25 behind season-best showings.

Presper, Fitzgerald and Katie Giacobbe (Duluth, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian School) added points for Pepperdine in the 400 IM. All three earned top-20 finishes for 33 total points.

Day three ended with a fifth-place showing in the 400 medley relay. Parks, Mosbaugh, Barreiro and Naasz collectively turned in a season-best time of 3:54.69.

The Waves conclude the PCSC Championships at the Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatic center on Saturday.
