Tiffin Opens Inaugural Season By Downing Defiance, Ursuline

Junior Ty Collins, freshman Kyle Doss and freshman Ygor Zarnado won two events each as the Tiffin University men’s and women’s swimming and diving team defeated Defiance and Ursuline, Saturday morning at the YMCA Pool.

“I am very proud how our men and women teams represented the program and Tiffin University in the inaugural meet today,” Said head coach Margarita Kalmikova.  “We are young and have a lot to learn. It is very exciting to see how much potential and talent we have on the team. To be able to get a win in the first meet, in front of the home crowd is always good, and gives more motivation to work hard.”

The men (1-0) beat Defiance (0-1) 77-26.  Collins won the 100-yard backstroke (56.04) and the 1000 freestyle (10:51.34), Doss captured the 100 breaststroke (1:00.15) and the200 individual medley (1:56.47) while Zarnado took first in the 100 and 200 free events (49.59, 1:48.79).

The Dragons picked up wins from freshman Mark Cover on the 1-meter board (151.50 points), junior Pedro Van Isschot in the 100 butterfly (55.35), senior Alex Weaver on the 3-meter board (147.70 points), the 200 medley relay team of Collins, Doss, Van Isschot and Zarnado (1:39.06) and the 200 free relay of Van Isschot, freshman Rasheed Melville, freshman Matt Campbell and freshman Logan Brutcher (1:39.59).

The women (2-0) beat Defiance (1-1) 48-44 and Ursuline (0-2) 55-37.  The 200 medley relay team of junior Nicole Twarek, freshman Melinda Ulbrecht, freshman Brooke Hill and junior Colleen Borland (2:04.70) had the distinction of winning the first event in TU history.

The Dragons received victories from junior Katie Branson on the 1-meter board (87.90 points), Twarek in the 100 back (1:12.30) and Ulbrecht in the 100 breast (1:09.21).

Tiffin hits the road, Saturday, Oct. 19, taking on Findlay.  The meet is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
