The Washington University in St. Louis men’s swimming & diving team won both duals against Rhodes College and Principia College, and the WUSTL women split duals with Rhodes and Southern Illinois University Saturday at Principia College.
In the double dual, the WUSTL men defeated Rhodes 258-16, and earned a 248-26 win over Principia. On the women’s side, Washington U. beat Rhodes 215-70, but dropped its dual against NCAA Division I Southern Illinois, 71-228.
The Washington U. men won 14 of 16 events contested, including three individual first-place finishes by sophomore Luke Dobben. He won the 200 freestyle (1:46.00), 200 butterfly (1:58.56), and the 100 butterfly (53.36).
Junior Brian Carpenter, sophomores Zane Turpin and Matt Nutter each won two individual events. Carpenter won the 100 breaststroke in 59.48, and the 200 backstroke in a season-best 2:01.40. Turpin posted first-place finishes in the 500 freestyle (4:54.86) and 1,000 freestyle (10:13.03). Nutter won both the 100 backstroke (55.11) and the 100 freestyle (48.42).
Junior Chi Pham won a pair of events for the Washington U. women. She posted a winning time of 58.95 in the 100 backstroke, and won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.42. Freshman Sophie Gan gave the WUSTL women their third first-place finish, winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:26.31.
Freshman Reed Dalton added a first-place finish for the WUSTL men in the 50 freestyle (22.54), while junior Tyler Perez won the 200 breaststroke (2:15.60). Freshman RJ Petrella also won an individual event, claiming first in the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:00.04.
The Washington U. men’s 200-medley relay team of freshman Kaisen Yao, Carpenter, Dalton and senior Brendan Morin won with a time of 1:36.31. In the men’s 200-freestyle relay, sophomore Will Miller, Yao, Dobben and Nutter teamed up to win with a time of 1:28.21.
The Washington University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams have the next two weeks off before traveling to Chicago for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 13-16, at the University of Chicago.
